This is reminiscient of the Bell Co's who sold their telephone listings to telemarketers and then offered their customers options to keep the telemarketers out and charged by the month for those services. They made $$$ on both ends.

M$ has "bundled" IE deep into the OS. IE is the primary channel that viruses and spyware exploit. Why can't they "bundle" the fix in the OS?

MS could release the source code to XP - but are there any obligations to FUTURE Windows release? By the time they decide to comply with EU demands, Windows 2006 could be released and that XP source code means nothing.

MTV is not a record label, they don't have any music artists signed to them. They'll have to secure a licensing agreement for each and every song to get music to this service. That means not only does MTV/M$ get a cut, the labels get a cut. And from their history of whining about iTunes, they'll demand a hefty cut. It's no surprise that the prices haven't been announced yet, I doubt they'll be able to compete with iTunes with so many hands in the pie.

The IRS is the one organization that you don't want to fuck with

They tried to fuck with me and I beat them back.

Last year they tried to dispute deductions for alimony payments. The deductions were perfectly legit. I had done my homework before making those claims.

I provided all the evidence they asked for, they still disputed. Unfortunately they picked the wrong time to mess with me because I was all fired up from getting ready for my divorce trial. When I got my CPA involved and fired back at their disputes USING THEIR OWN IRS PUBLICATIONS to prove my case, they finally relented with the original tax return unchanged.

This was a case of some auditor who did not know their own system too well. Nothing nasty ever happened, I was lucky to have all my paperwork organized, they had a tiger by the tail, and I can write a very firm and convincing letter. Even my divorce lawyer couldn't believe I got off the hook.

You CAN dispute the IRS if you know what you are doing.

  8. A la Carte can work on FCC Report Supports a la Carte TV Pricing · · Score: 1
The media industry doesn't want a la carte programming because it would hurt their business model, IE the model that garners maximum profit.

They have long argued that consumers have parental blocking controls at the box. But consumers must still pay for those channels they are blocking.

They'd lose advertising revenue? The cable industry doesn't profit from advertising, the studio that creates the channel does. If the cable industry is so concerned over losing advertising from a la carte, than that is an admission that the content on most cable channels is so poor that nobody wants to watch them. They're just putting off the inevitable - your content SUCKS!

I don't subscribe to cable, but my parents do. When TW moved some premium channels they had subscribed to into an upper tier which added another $10 to their monthly bill, they dropped the subscription. These are the kind of sleazy tactics that the media companies tries to utilize to draw more money out of our wallets.

When I walk into a restaurant, I can order any item I want from their menu. They don't force four other entrees down my throat because I only wanted just one.

If a la carte works for the restaurant business, there's no reason why it couldn't work in the cable TV business.

Bush only has two years left in his term. Like M$, $ony has the resources (supplied by your purchase dollars and the RIAA settlements from suing downloaders) to drag this trial through the courts long enough to get a sympathetic elected official in a position of power to derail the DoJ.

If I'm paying to get this episode off of iTunes, why should they stuff advertisements in there as well?

Which is one of the reasons I refuse to subscibe to cable TV anymore. The ads are getting WAY too intrusive, and there are too many of them. I have to pay for channels that I will NEVER watch and they are not going to switch to ala carte choices, and they keep moving the premium channels into upper levels that raises your cable bill if you want to keep them.

I'm going to wait and see with the Video iPod, and the instant I see ads with the content then it will be a deal breaker. I'm SICK of those damn ads!

I'm tired of the manipulations of the cable TV industry - I'd hate to see it propogate into the way that content is distributed on the iPod. Now that Apple owns the distribution channel, they may have some control over that. We will see - I'm a VERY reluctant consumer.

I remember meeting Robert Moog at a music technology convention in 1981. He was still designing new instruments, but was in the paradoxical position of not being able to put his own name on them...thanks a lot CBS Music.

CBS Music never owned the Moog trademark. In the 1970/80s it was owned by Norlin, who also owned Gibson guitars, Lowrey organs, Maestro FX pedals, Pearl Drums, among others.

The Moog trademark lapsed by the mid 90s and was snatched up by Don Martin. After promises of reissued Moog products, accepting 50% deposits, and very little product delivered, Don was forced into bankruptcy and the assets were liquidated. Bob Moog stepped in to reacquire the trademarks to his name and the instruments, and operated as Moog Music since 2002.

Bob's 21st century Minimoog, the Voyager, is an outstanding product. I have one of the early Voyagers and it is a high quality product, as is the other Moog products they currently make.

Sort of like Macrovision filing patents on circumvention methods of their own systems, that way if a third party sells a circumvention box then Macrovision can put them out of business citing patent infringement.

Not to sound like a jerk or anything.. ok maybe a little, but why should everyone else have to have their theater experience compromised just to accomidate you?

I have been hearing impaired since birth. You have obviously never suffered the shortcomings of a hearing aid.

Most hearing aids do not function like the human ear does. When you are in a room with loud machinery or with a lot of people talking (bars, parties), it is impossible to hear conversation. You are constantly adjusting the volume of the aid up or down. By the time you turn it down far enough to tolerate the noise, the voices of people next to you are too soft.

Movies are way too dynamic for hearing aids. After you've turned down the aid during that overly loud explosion scene, the dynamic immediately drops during the dialogue and you missed whatever was said while reaching for the volume control on the aid. I couldn't go to movies for years because I was missing so much dialogue.

I eventually got a better hearing aid but the dynamics are still hard to tolerate.

Like the parent poster, I wait for DVDs so I can use the captions. I also rigged an audio compressor between my DVD player and my stereo to tame the damn dynamics, and it is much more reasonable. It also keeps your apartment neighbors happy.

If subtitles are distracting, that didn't stop The Passion of the Christ from being a hit movie. All the dialogue is aramic, subtitles were a constant presence. Subtitles are also used in foreign releases of american films. And don't underestimate the disability of deafness or hearing impairment - your life can be much more miserable than you think. It can also have its blessings - I can turn off those "Attention K-Mart shoppers" sales pitches over the store intercoms :)
