  1. Only, I have to walk that back. It actually generates a good amount of thrust. Now I'm impressed.

  2. The main trouble with all this talk is it doesn't mention amounts. One may be able to have all kinds of funny effects like Casimir and radiation behind the horizon and what not and it's interesting to figure out how momentum is conserved but to go from a measurable effect to 'let's use it for propulsion' is outright silly. The effect will be in the wrong ballpark and you'll be much better off by just using removing the back and using the actual microwaves for propulsion.

When you cut through all the environmentalism BS, you see that the real underlying problem is obviously overpopulation.

If you look at carbon footprints you'll see they vary wildly and the main factor is wealth. The west has a huge carbon footprint. Africans have a small carbon footprint. China has a modest but increasing carbon footprint. Hard to refuse China for trying to reach our standard of living.

Not even that. It was a proposal and the proposal has been thoroughly shot down since. But there is another older agreement with a deadline of 2035 and that's when all new cars should be able to drive without emissions - in the Netherlands. So new cars should at least be hybrids by then.

That's the tradeoff. They're trying to improve the tradeoff a bit but really, it's still wasteful. At least the plastic is collected unlike horrible things like artificial grass, or that little hype with the billions of elastic loom bands, that pump huge amounts of little plastic pieces into the environment. Someone should make a listing of those.

  8. I doubt if McDonald's should be described as 'cheap'. I'd describe it as 'fast' and with a taste tuned to instant mass appeal. In Europe McDonald's is not cheap. I also doubt if its food is inferior. It'll be too fat and too sweet as long as that sells.

  9. It's also less than 1/1000 of the stories posted on /. in a year and you just pick that one to comment on!
But I agree Slashdot has quality issues.

The leaked files expose as corrupt two Iraqi oil ministers, a fixer linked to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, senior officials from Libya’s Gaddafi regime, Iranian oil figures, powerful officials in the United Arab Emirates and a Kuwaiti operator known as “the big cheese”.

  15. I doubt if that is the same issue. A cartel is a form of monopoly. That's independent of bribery issues . One could almost say it makes bribery superfluous.
Finally, it's clear that OPEC is currently not functioning as a cartel, with the Saudis dumping their oil.

  16. I think partly describes what happened. The FBI was already able to hack the phone before this case, and wasn't even that interested in the content of the phone, but preferred to use it as a precedent to pressure Apple. Now they're backpedalling, but not by lying. Or maybe they're lying even. But they can still hack the phone without apple. Snowden described one technique for hacking the iphone, backing up the memory and overwriting it again and again after x failed password attempts. Can be automated and optimized.
