Let's face it, little green men are way more interesting than any other explanation. For that reason alone it'll stick with us. But we're all sign-tific so we don't actually believe in LGM in flying saucers. That's where the old question mark at the end comes in:
UFO sighting is BU!XFLOM sixpack on a low budget intergalactic sightseeing trip.... ?
We're not claiming anything. So we can all keep talking about it without actually being naive.
Except me of course. I think the government is covering it all up because the aliens they got to know are so dumb that if we found out we'd make fun of them all the time and in the interplanetary row that follows they'd kill us all.
Okay maybe not. Maybe if people would just be a bit more imaginative they'd come up with a larger array of explanations.

Hear hear, what a noise you're making. I didn't look into what possible plans are concerning Venezuela and I don't have an opinion on it, but if a coup could nearly succeed, then it's tempting to consider a coup assisted with some additional firepower to make doubters stand down. There are homegrown ground forces inside Venezuela. And maybe Colombia is willing to assist too.
Would it work? It would be a mess. But militarily it's a lot less of a challenge than Iran, and there are very real plans for Iran with minimal use of ground forces, and there are always a lot of air force people around thinking air force will do the job. As happened in Lebanon.
Of course by definition a real full fledged invasion requires a lot of ground forces. So you can't do that for now.
I missed somehow exactly which Daily Show items are involved here. I still can find many Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert stories there. So I'm not sure how relevant the free speech context is. But, two things:
- The daily show doesn't pretend to do more than entertain, but I wouldn't say it doesn't intend to do more than that(those multiple negations should keep you busy for a while).
- Entertainment and humor are different in very significant ways. Humor is insight(chuckle) and as such it can be a lot more important than the actual news because it is about understanding the news. Which is what needs work most.
Researchers show that there is a correlation between the effort spent on the cable network and the effort spent on detecting autism spectrum disorders.
I doubt a bit if (a part of) the art world considers it a problem either, it's just part of the game. So let's try a cynical description of the game:
As with the old joke of cans of sardines being used as alternative money in the war, the rule is that you don't try to eat the sardines. That is not what they are for. So once a piece has a certificate of authenticity, the owner has no interest in having it checked, and assisted by a certificate from a reputed expert, she will only sell to people who do not insist on any new checks being performed before the transaction.
Acquiring the certificate is an interesting phase. Considering that a judgement is often not categorical but rather a matter of percentage, the expert has to judge the 'complete context' when deciding to make his 80% certainty to become a 100% or not. What are the chances his judgement will turn against him?
It's good to make sure you like a painting before you buy it.
The way the story probably went is that the U.S. was in desperate need of some victory, and Libya saw a chance to try again to normalize relations. The U.S accepted, on one condition of course, that Lybia take all the blame.
I recall that the russians intercepted a lot of american communications during the Iraq war. Indeed the strict operation rules for SINCGARS were often not followed, but I got the impression that the russians had cracked many of hard cases too. The frequency hopping is the easy part, there exist wideband frequency hopping interceptors for that.
I do not know if this is considered a critical issue because reliability and simplicity have a higher priority and people on the ground just have to take in account that the communication is not bulletproof.
There were daily briefings of russian intelligence on http://www.iraqwar.ru/ but the site was soon taken down under pressure from higher up.
So Hezbollah hacking SINCGARS communication is no big news if you accept that they were competent and well equipped. The only issue could be that the IDF were particularly sloppy because they severely underestimated the adversary on the ground.
And the idea of human experimental contraptions disrupting the fabric of our known universe is also present in Haldeman's "The Coming" . Could be a common theme actually.
the only thing I can come up with is that they would buy an amount X, send out a mailing , hope that through a shortlived collective interest the stock would go up for long enough to sell with profit, and then move on to the next near dead stock.
But anyway the short flashes establish the concept of subliminal ads. So you can expect faster flashes very soon. It's just that the first case is not really subliminal.

The war in Iraq is only exhausting the ground forces.
In short, the war in Iraq leads to a shortage in shoes, but not in guns.

Nice try in scaring us away and keeping everything to yourself.
:) We're coming!
But we're not falling for it

when people summarize the situation nicely thereby making all further discussion redundant.
Liberalism is only right 85 to 90 percent of the time.
Oh, and management of NYT tends to be rather conservative,
and they lie too.
(sound of cogs turning).
Okay so I'm kidding. Not sure to what extent tho.

Or on a matter of techicalities the defendent could insist tax be made dependent on the amount of energy transferred.
Apparently people are running out of steam already.
More fart jokes please!
They didn't predict fox doing this though! Now did they?
Apart from that, agreed. The daily show is a better source, not just as good.
Just to make sure you get your facts right,..
I'm being OUTRAGEOUSLY pedantic!

That's what Zappa thought too
Anyway, James Hogan's book is from 1980.
And the idea of human experimental contraptions disrupting the fabric of our known universe is also present in Haldeman's "The Coming" . Could be a common theme actually.
I don't know how old Hogan's book is, but in 1990 or so David Brin wrote
Earth
where an artificial black hole grows out of control and slowly eats the planet earth from the inside out.
...when everybody tapes their password on the side of the screen :)
and that's a very nice one indeed
