It seems to me that the people that bitch the loudest about illegal search and seizure are people who desire to break the law if they wish and don't want to get caught - do you REALLY care if some TSA agent goes through your dirty underwear and socks, I find it satisfying, especially if its been a long trip and the cloths are really smelly...Hell, Ive thought about carrying a really huge dildo in my luggage just for the entertainment value
Sounds pretty hokey to me... As a frequent air traveler, give me the old fashioned pat down search with full baggage inspection - in fact I felt safest after 9/11 when they did random searches at the gate too - I have seen more than one person lead away from a gate in handcuffs after a random gate search turned up illegal drugs or other such nonsense. So the fact that they made it through the gate in the first place points out the fallibility of the current process. IMHO we need MORE hands on security not less, more sniffers and x-ray machines - I can easily factor in a longer wait at the airport, the peace of mind is worth it to me...
except that phone lines are already here and as any basic electrical engineering class teaches bandwidth costs power - nice try. I love how all the pro Obama folks here think everything he says is like a tablet coming down from God - if GW had suggested it there would be endless debates about how the government should not step on the commercial enterprises and how its some plot to monitor our internet usage. And you can always count on the Slashdot mods to call ANYTHING critical of Obama's policies as flaimbait (and I can state with 100% assurance that this post will be classed as flaimbait also) - learn to take some criticism folks - I for one hope he'll come up with something worth a damn - so far we have
1. A decree that we will solve all the problems with solar power that thousands have been working on for the last 25 years
2. A decree that NASA is a good source of funds to transfer to other government programs and we should kill the manned replacement for the Space shuttle
3. A decree that we need a $44B dollar broadband system so that everyone in the US can surf porn at lightening speed
I honestly cannot wait for the next great technical epiphany from the great Obama and his team - I truly expect a Cold Fusion announcement any day now
my guess is its a complete wash - its just a transfer usage, if people are at home more they are using more electricity at home - delivery trucks have to bring the goods to you - etc. There are some jobs that can be done effectively by telecommuting - many more that cannot - about the biggest impact broadband for the masses will have is to expand the porn industry...
now that Obama and his team are on the job all kinds of things are going to be solved - next week maybe they will get cold fusion working and finally find the cure for male pattern baldness... Maybe he will put Al Gore on the team and start working on the next Internet...
when I posted this I knew that some moderator would call it Flamebait - but the fact of the matter is this - those of us that did not vote for him get to say I told you so every time Obama does something to bring our country down in technology - this is only what will be the first of many things - extravagant social programs cost lots of money and for those programs to ultimately get payed for we will have to sacrifice other things - Space, Military, National Physics labs, and on and on... We will certainly lose any leads we have to China and other countries before its all said and done. I seriously doubt all of us that work in those fields in the U.S are going to start working on the Obama National Energy Initiative - so that means we will probably all lose our jobs. I grew up on the Space Coast watching Saturn V's and Space Shuttles launch into orbit, it was this that got me energized to be an engineer in the first place - it makes me sad that Obama is considering dismantling our manned space program.
you may be too young to realize it but most of the really useful technology we use today has come out of Space and Military research - a vast amount of spin-offs from going to the moon have probably done more for energy efficiency than any research by independent companies and doing the research and the task provides jobs and stimulates the economy, as we ll as generating national pride - I would much rather my tax dollars go towards this than paying of someones mortgage who shouldn't have been given one in the first place...
I would say if it is done in unquestionable good taste it is OK - I have a friend who was nearly fired over a log message that contained profanity and was written to some obscure text file - a government official was randomly looking at files and found it and alerted his superiors - it was a BIG mess...did I mention this was on a major DoD weapons system.... It is not an Easter Egg but it certainly shows the pitfalls of "personalizing software"
1. A specific virus scanner (Nortan AV yuck) 2. A specific Firewall with company preset settings (blackice is what it used to be called its something else now)
3. We are assigned an RSA SecurID FOB which my manager must periodically re-confirm that I am authorized to use (like once a year)
basically it is a Huge pain only slightly offset by the convenience
I am not at all shocked - I am sure I have left genetic material over more than one continent - if someone wanted to sequence my DNA and post it on the Internet - HAVE FUN !!!!
agreed but the constitution doesn't say that the president needs any experience - he can even be a mostly absent junior senator who was a community organizer....
sorry to have offended you - maybe we should both refrain from judging people we don't know - have been shafted before for six figures so I can definitely understand - learned from that experience as I am sure you have...
So you are saying I should go back to being poor as what, a statement of solidarity with all the irresponsible poor people that bought flat screen TV's on credit and got into homes they could not afford - I used to live in a freaking trailer and worked my ass off to put myself through school and pay for a wife and child at the age of 18 - many times I did not know how I was going to pay my rent and I ate a lot of 25 cent Ramen soup: things I never did:
1. Take handouts from the government 2. Buy things on credit or live beyond my means
Now that I am able to own my own house , provide for my family , donate to charities, pay literally $100K of dollars in social security and Medicaid - I'd be willing to bet I have done far more for my community and others than you have...
so the homes that those mortgages represent while some may be overpriced the majority are worth something and therefore the notes have worth - yes a bunch of phucktards are getting off easy - but I (and many others) am losing far more in investments because of the stock market tanking and would rather the bleeding stop than sit around hoping for some miracle of change to save my retirement funds
if congress GAVE the money away for nothing it would be a bailout - if they directly paid off the mortgages it would be a bailout - assuming the debt is NOT a bailout because, while the debt may be toxic - it still has VALUE and is thus potentially worth more than the money being printed to pay for it....
I agree - there was some growing instability in the end probably as the air density got less - it may have reached orbit but it may not have been in one piece. Kind of odd how the video ended just as it started to get really wild - I'd say them boy's need to do a little work on their control system tuning - seems like it has a bit too much gain:-)
sorry fellow Slashdotters - I can't take it anymore, only the media is getting excited about this - Personally I'd much rather read about solid state disk drives or naked women than who Obama is texting today or how many geritol pills McCain had last week....
I work for a big defense contractor we smoke all our hard disks in a magnetic pulse box and then disassemble them for recycling. Not unusual in my opinion - especially in this day and age - I still have all the hard disks I have ever had in a personal computer or laptop - never felt comfortable throwing them away even before identity theft and such became so commonplace.

so what is the carbon footprint of a $44B dollar broadband system - or are you going to tell me its solar powered....

I dont care to know any of the following about Obama's preferences:
1. Ipod or Zune
2. Apple or PC
3. Charmin or Scott
4. Missionary or Doggy
5. Chevy or Ford
Folks get over it - Obama is not the second coming and he's not the Antichrist -

Further proof that he is no JFK - how about instead he challenge us to get to Mars before the decade is out !!!
unless your team happens to be Team Goatsx...

From an organization that always goes with the low bidder - this is not surprising....
I wonder if he worked on any non-nutritive cereal varnishes ?
