You really think the department of homeland security uses Windows to protect the outer wall of their network? Come on stop spreading FUD, I don't know many companies that use Windows to protect their out network. Even Microsoft uses FreeBSD in alot of their outer layers of their network for it's firewall's.
I know this is really off topic but I was just wondering if anybody has seen a setup like this.
ATI All-in-Wonder Card hooked up to a streaming video of some kind Windows or Real Media. So that you can watch TV over streaming media from a remote location like say work.:)
You could be right but until the GPL is really tested in court you are going to see more and more companies violating the GPL. Most large companies see the GPL as something they don't really have to follow, because first it has never been tested in court, second it was drafted by computer "nerds" not a legal team, and third why follow it Linux is free and if they have to pay some monitary amount somewhere in the future it is still going to be cheaper than using the alternatives.
That is the problem with free software, once it is free there really isn't any problem violating the license because down the road if they have to pay money it is just going to be a slap on the wrist compared to the amount of money they made with the product. I think an advocate group needs to start going after these companies like Linksys, Tivo, and others in much the same way SCO has gone after the Linux community.
This is really better for Microsoft than Sun. Not only is Microsoft now getting rid of products they don't want to support anymore. They can blame it on Sun and say "Sorry we can't support that product any more because of Sun, but we can upgrade you to the latest version for a modest price."
I have to agree with everything he said in this article. The biggest problem with Open Source today is Open Source it self. It has no strong backing by big corporations. Sure you can say IBM is a backing Open Source, no they aren't, they are using Open Source to drive up profit. They take more than they give.
But this all drives to the point, it's hard to make a buck when everybody already has your product and it is free.
I really think it is a nessisity to be able to jam frequecies. Because who wants a frequency open over the white house of pentigon. Because they any nut with a missle and a Galileo receiver could launch a missle at a low range altitude at Washington.
Well it looks like the world of Red Hat on the desktop is going like the over zelouse dot-com's. I really think this is sad, because all that it does is make Linux more eliteist, beause now there is no brand that people really associate with Linux. In addition this pushes Microsofts Desktop further, because Microsoft is a brand, Linux isn't, and the most recongized brand in Linux has just folded up shop for the Desktop.
I see this as a trend and Red Hat is trying to compete with IBM on the server market. If you notice every year IBM offers less and less in the desktop hardware and everybody is moving twords the enterprise servers to pick up money. This allows Microsoft to suck up more of the market share on the desktop. In addition the way things are going now, with.Net and webservices, Microsoft is going to dominate even the server market, because if they can convince you to buy their servers and program applications on *nix in Mono to take advantage of that, they win.
Because like it or not Exchange and SQL2000 are far more advanced than anything Linux has to offer. And now that their are interfaces, people are going to try and put out applications in *nix with Mono. Only forcing companies in the long run to buy Microsoft Servers and might as well buy Desktops too, because.Net will be.Net where ever you go.
I don't understand why Microsoft is always hit with this inovation crap. First off the goal of a business is not to innovate. That is what Universities do the goal of a business is to sell your product at a price and keep people comming back to that product. At least in the software business. So far Microsoft has done a great job at that. And yes they have inovated, anybody taken a look at the new display system they have for Longhorn?
I really wish they would stop putting these Camera's in phones. Because not only is it useless, at least for me, but I can't even bring the phone into work anymore because of my companies policy on camera's in the work place. It's almost like you have to buy a low-quality phone so I can use it everywhere, including my place of work.
I don't think you are understanding what an emulator means. An emulator means that it will simulate the environment, and Virtual PC is an x86 emulator. In addition if they would add "enhancements" as you put it, it would have to be on the outside, say better intigration with the hosts network, memory management, etc. If they changed the emulator part that would mean that somehow they would have to redesign a part of Windows to be compatible with it. Because currently Windows only support x86, on most if not all hardware environments.
I just think you all are either trying to spread FUD, or don't really know much if anything about this product.
If we all just stoped complaining about useless stuff, we could stop spreading FUD and these guys at eWeek could actually write about real problems.
You do all realize that even if Linux didn't show up in the menu it is still supported. You just choose Other and set your memory allocation. I don't understand what the big deal is and why everybody can't really understand that those OS's listed are just templates not supported OS's. You would think a technical bunch like/. would really understand that an x86 emulatur can run anything that a normal x86 machine can run.
What is everything comming to the Fox company is sueing another Fox company. What is next Microsoft Office sueing Microsoft Windows for including "notepad" in the Windows software. I mean come on the Simpsons make fun of everybody, I think if Fox News starts going down the road of the RIAA, we are going to loose one of the better news channels.
When you think Microsoft is evil and there is nobody lower, you look at Eols to find that they even sunk below Microsoft. Can't Microsoft just buy Eols and fire all their employees and have this nightmare be over with.
Because not only does it piss off the RIAA and MPAA, it also can be proved as a model some where down the line when a lawsuit comes up. They can point to Canada and say look their wasn't any or much of a loss of record sales.
I have not problem with large corporations, but once they start picking on old people and children, then I think somebody needs to take them out back and smack them around a little. -- Play Ground Rules aren't just for Elementary School --

I guess how it is panning out is: Microsoft biggest promoter of viruses. *nix biggest promoter of SPAM. :)

I really think we are living in a world right now of some of the worst record keeping of knowledge.
You have to look at price in the comparison. You can usually buy 2-3 SQL2000 servers for the price of one Orcal.
Why is that, tell me, I am curious? Or do you hate Microsoft so much that you can't see a simple stradegy forming?

Wow, this is weird for /. this post has been up for 30+ mins and it only has 35 replies.
I like that they actually put this demo together with Windows XP Power Toys.

It was /.ed in less than 5 mins. That has to be a new record.
So those 2 are the ones that always get me lost. Oh yeah first post too. :)
So it's sort of like evil through osmosis.
What is he trying to put me out of a job. :)

So much for that common OSS argument that Microsoft doesn't inovate.
