While I can generally agree with your statement, let me point out a few issues.
First: At no time have they said the they will ensure, regulate or be responsible for the service. They are just claiming that their subscribers are not the problem it's the others.
Second: If subscriptions = accountability then I would assume that this would apply to all subscription services. So limiting users to their products and services just proves the point that their intentions has nothing to do with responsibility but with greed. I am sure that Yahoo!, AOL and all other subscription services would also like to solve the same problem.
Third: This is coming out after weeks a bag media press.
I just have a hard time believing any PR. Remember they are there to put a positive spin on the issue. If your are expecting any PR rep to com out and just say "We wish to destroy our competition therefore we will no longer support standards." you will be waiting a very long time. There is no reason why this cannot be stopped with the cooperation of all the players. Has any attempt been made to coordinate the effort? All I see is AOL doing it's thing and MS trying to weasel into another area that they can dominate.
Just my 2 cents and all the MS lovers now will moderate this as flaimbait.
What I love about Windows users is that it is intended when it does not work. Like it's a feature or something. If you wish the same fuctionallity in Linux stay with one and only one Windows manager. How many of you can say you had this problem between recent KDE apps?
I've had this problem between Windows apps on Windows. Where you may not copy and paste between apps. I've had this problem on Mac OSX. This is on documents which I have created. Nothing is perfect. When I see some smug attitude claiming it is intended, then I know that you are only fooling yourselves.
Keep in mind my initial reply was to a statement which was using the generic Windows and not the "Latest and greatest XP". That the versions in real world situations, where these problems have occured, do not correspond. There are inconsistencies in software (BUGS). While MS and Apple had over 30 years to perfect them, they still do not have perfect systems.
First let me start by saying that you CANNOT "copy/paste pretty much anything from any program" on Windows. There are programs which prevent this, (ie: Acrobat, Terminal Services) just to name 2 because the list is extensive.
A computer is a tool. Nothing more. Nothing less. This tool is designed to accomplish certain tasks. Some tasks are accomplished using tool A. Some tasks are accomplished using tool B.
With that being said I would like to point out that I would not like to see a dentist using a carpenters drill on my teeth.
In the same fashion I hate this "ease of use" stupidity where productivity is sacrificed because we can not be bothered to train someone on the task at hand. EXAMPLE: Anyone who has used a serious accounting system will atest to the fact that the [TAB] key to advance to the next field is LAME. All accounting equipment dating back to god knows when use a numeric keypad. This same keypad was not present in the first PC's. Not on Apples. Not on IBM's. So when you see an accounting app which uses the [TAB] key claiming that it is business quality, then you know that this was not designed for accounting but was designed for the home user. Like I said before and come back to my point now, How many here have a DENTISTS drill at home? If you beleive that one size fits all, then why not bring your home drill to the dentists office next time you have a filling?
While I will agree we need standards, making everything be the same make no sense. So to come back to your subject. I can cut/copy and paste, not to mention run apps (GUI included), as easily on remote systems as in local systems on Linux and other Unix platforms. I cannot do the same as easily on Windows. So I do not use Windows as my default desktop/system/OS. I feel Windows comes with toooooooo much overhead and is counter productive for my needs. I do use Windows.
I am not asking you to change. What I'm asking you is to tell it like it is and stop making up FUD.
I beleive trademark law makes sense to a certain extent...If the word exists it should not be made into a trade mark nor should any rights to this word be granted to any one. If it was spelled APPPLE then fine. If the trade marc is APPLE CORPO then fine. IF ITS APPLE PUTERS then its fine. If its APPLE then it is not fine. APPLE CORPORATION not fine. APPLE COMPUTERS not fine. Why should I be alowed to trade mark a language????
Please explain which IP rights are being infringed upon. I have been following this now since the begining and I cannot refference any document in which SCO identifies the infringing code...It's like saying that authors should not allow people to read their books unless they sign a EULA to protect their IP 'cause someone may steal it...
If SCO had a case they would identify the IP infringements and collect their royalties and be done with it. There is no infringment therefore SCO cannot produce the code, so all they do is BLAB BLAB BLAB...WHY DO PEOPLE STILL LISTEN TO THIS SH!T...
You also have Silk Systems , while they have a good acct app, their service and support need a little help. I guess that puts them in line with accpac.
It seams you were trying to use the wrong tool for the job...I'm wondering how would you treat payroll within MS money? It's the wrong tool for the job....
Because you're one of the few who thought about that do hickie thing a ma gig which you use and share with friends but never bothered to patent... Next time get a second mortgage on your house and hire a lawyer...
Buy a patent and create work for your friendly neighborhood lawyer!
Most people can't name one patented thing if their life depended on it....
So why don't you just ctrl+S and replace this page on/. if it's sooooo easy.....

But if everyone were to use Bayesian I swear we wouldn't even have to propose a new protocol, talk about new legislation, etc. 1) As long as people keep buying from SPAM it will not stop. Beleive it or not some one out there is buying those pen1s enlargements.
2) Even if no one out there buys anything you will still have the idiots who will buy into these lists.
3) I still do not understand why people beleive that they can outsmart everyone. As fast as you add filters some one will pass it throught those same filters and see what gets through.
We need to be able to identify the sending server, no an IP is NOT an ID. It needs to be part of a TLD, and maybe the registrar need to be held accountable for the content of a registration.
Or, like I said earlier, they're a bunch of yahoo's that have no idea of what they're doing.
I'm sorry but the last Yahoo! that I know of act like they know what they are doing, they actually made quite a bit of money... you may NO LONGER use that term. It should now read:
Or, like I said earlier, they're a bunch of SCO's that have no idea of what they're doing.
It annoys me when legal types with an insufficient grasp of technology create laws without realising the consequences. Laws should have to pass through some kind of expert panel first.
It annoys me that tech types with insufficent grasp of the law create products or services without realising the consequences.
Most laws in democratic societies do pass through an "expert panel", the problem is who defines "expert". Unfortunately the same cannot be said about products and services, no expert panel required.
No. Send yourself an email as you described and you will notice that the university mail server will be properly identified. Your station will also be properly identified. Now take a look at SPAM and you will see that they can put as a Domain, "YOUR MAMA EAT SH1T" as their servers domain and your stupid server will still accept it.
Try what you claim. Look at the HEADERS and you will see that the only SPAM (if you follow the current anti-spam rules for your mail server) getting through is SH1T like the record above. As a matter of fact you have to go out of your way to configure your system to work and identify itself with a stupid domain as mentioned above.
This is what I LOVE about admins, if it does not fit in with what they want to do they could not care less about how it affects others. In order for you to send mail through most ISP's you need to either use one of their IP's or you need to authenticate yourself. If you are using ADSL, DIAL-UP, or what ever (I know now everyone will start litteraly quoting the exact connect that I mention) to connect to the net you need to have your system IDENTIFIED by an IP in order to get a response. If you need to connect to on-line banking your IP and system/domain name needs to resolve. Most ISP's assign a name to your connection if it is dynamic, and it resolves.
I have naver seem a control system work where responsibility is not required to authorise a transaction.
As for your terrorist commet: I guess your solution to let them just get on the plane without any checks is the proper way? It does not matter to you how many die, just so you can save 1/2hour? You might as well as give them the BOMB!
Lots of legitimate email doesn't match, either. Many companies and most hosting companies use one server for incoming mail - the server the MX record points to - and another for outgoing - one which doesn't have an MX record.
Just this second I received 2 SPAMS here is the example that I make....
Received: from (HELO h1cmvuw) [191.123.181.36] by XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX SMTP id 0yK797LGLSg8fZ; Wed, 23 Jul 2003 19:51:18 +0400
As you can see the first IP does not match the sending ISP's domain name, as a matter of fact it's not even a valid domain name. If this was a valid ISP these both would match. If not show me an axample of why the would not. This is not the SMP in outlook, this is the date stamp place by the Sending SMTP server. If it's not correct then why would I want to accept it.
Here is a valid one from openoffice.org;
Received: from openoffice.org (s002.sfo.collab.net [64.125.133.202]) an MX record could be setup to support this. It would only be a one time setup ( I do not think "real business" would change SMTP servers every month)
You are right that the SPAMMERS do not use there own servers but they would have to setup a DNS server and also get a connection in order to SPAM. They would have to do this for every domain that they wish to use for SPAM because we can now also blacklist their DNS servers IP as listed on the MX record. This will increase the cost for the SPAMMERS without a great deal of cost to legitimate business.
Filtering does NOT STOP SPAM it hides it. I find it increases it. These sweeping changes would remove 100% of the SPAM which reaches my INBOX, at this time, while none of the legitimate email that I receive would be refused.
SMTP is broken it needs to be fixed, filtering does not addresss the issue just the problem. If a SMTP server is being used just for sending purposes it can then be programed to redirect to the receiving SMTP server.
Your comments seem to make a few assuptions on who I am and what I do but they have shown to me that you are unable to understand that changes needed to be made bucause we ALL can see that what is in place now DOES NOT work, and this includes filtering. If you have another means of stopping SPAM I'm all ears.
I always wondered why we do not confirm that the sending IP matches the MX record of a domain.
1. Most of the SPAM sent today has this little problem, where the sending server does not resolve to the IP which is listed in the header.
2. It will permit people to first map a domain to an IP.(Makes it harder for a SPAMMER because now he needs to register a domain. Once the domain is used to SPAM it can then be blocked. All blocked domains can be easily maintained in a list and shared by ISP's
3. Time is money. Moving domains from one ISP to another does not help the SPAMMER. The domain is blocked and the IP is identified. The SPAMMER has to be able to activate multiple domains, multiple DNS servers and such. The paterns will be easier to identify and it will be easier to block SPAM by either Blocking the Domain or the DNS server or all the IP's of a certain offending ISP
4. In order to acquire a domain a payment transaction must occure. This can be traced if it's a credit card. ISP's who accept cash withou ID or who continually HOST SPAMMERS can be blocked. The work involved to acquire a domain may inclease the costs of a domain but I am sure that this will enable people to assign responsibility.
While this system is not perfect and, yes it may cause some headaches for most, having sendmail match the MX record to the IP of the sendind server would eliminate almost 100% of all the SPAM that I have encountered in the last 3 months. We would still need to keep the existing anti-spam practices in place.
When SPAMMERS find a way around this we can then address that issue when it's time.
Yikes! Man I moved off 95 because of the poor implementation on windows. I may be able to cut and paste in Windows but I am unable to save and open unless all softaware is written by MS (Yes this is exagerated like his statement).
What I can't stand about Windows is all the people telling me how great it is, and most of them do not even know how to UNINSTALL some shit software that they have installed. These same people do not even pay for the software that they claim is soooooo great.
Mark this as a troll I don't care!!! I have systems running which have been installed when 3.11 was the main OS for MS, and they are still usefull. The programs may no longer be availabe on the current systems which I'm using but MY WORK is still accessible. I had files that were on MS doc format and had to be converted into W97. They fell apart!! Then I went to RTF and never looked back. I will not go into the accounting package that ran on W3.11 (which could not even export to ASCII). I stopped trying to fit into my systems and started getting systems to fit my needs. Ever tried to share files on 3.1?? Have you setup a network printer with 3.11? I think not, otherwise you would never have made the above comment...
My files are portable and can be viewed on ALL OS's including Windows. I can remotely and securely connect and access my files since 95. I can view, and work on a MAC, FreeBSD, Linux, and yes even Windows. I am FREE of Windows restrictions, as you can see from sig, for a very long time. In order to meet my needs Windows costs me more and offers less than most open source solutions. If tomorrow their is some new OS named OZ I'm ready baby...nothing to convert. NOTHING! Is all OPEN....
Your story reminds me of all these windows systems that I have to keep reinstalling (for people who keep on explaining to me how simple Windows is). If you purchase a Dell (or any system with windows pre installed) and never add anything to it, including software updates, you are probably safe. When you start moving away from the original install, then you have LOADS of trouble with windows. One example that I remember is an Intel NIC that was just a BITCH to install
I have moderator points and I'm about to post go figure...
This has nothing to do with thechnology but more to do with attitude, policy and productivity.
You see in most trades/proffessions you need to learn how a tool works before you are eveluated on the tool. After that you need to apply the tool to the trade, which means you need to understand the workings of the trade. This takes years.
Now, with computers, we have business that are trying to fit the trade to their tools. When that does not work and they encounter problems, they hire someone who knows one tool. They then try to force the tool into the business.
This will never work! You cannot make a general tool to fit every need and at the same time make this tool easy to use. A good example that I can bring up is for MS Word users. Placing graphics in word does not make word a publishing software. All it has done is waste your time and the other person who is to open the document. Word is made for typing letters when we use it for other things it becomes complex. IT DOES A POOR JOB and it costs you more time and money than buiying the right tool or asking someone who is in the trade.
Now before buying any software you need to identify what your needs are. Do you need to access files from home? Better yet why are you taking work home? How manyhours do you propose to work? If you wish to spend more time with your familly then mabye you should look at sleeping less because sitting in front of your computer is NOT familly time. In most cases this an ego issue (Look I can PISS farther than you!) an not a technologie issue.
If Linux can only STOP trying to be Windows then the virus issue will stay with Windows. We have seen on the server side that Linux has not followed in the Windows steps.
One last question why do you first start talking about the desktop and then give a server example?
Recording, Engineering, Mastering, Mixing, Studio Time, CD Sleeve Printing, anything you can think of
You are right ANYTHING you can think of and a lot more of which you cannot. When was the last time that a FESTIVAL was expensed when the yearly financials were completed? Were all the employeees invited to gala? Were all the clients invited? How about the media?
Buddy, with $50 a pop and Microsofts market share, you could probably pay all the Linux developers on every project ever created with very reasonable salaries.
The only person making statements without making a point is you and you call me a zealot? I could not care less how long you have been using Linux and I do not care to make this a pissing contest. If you like windows good for you. I find it missing basic functions that I find dear to me.Examples
1) remote administration. (Yes I could pirate a copy of the server version, but no thank you)
2) transportability. Microsoft tends to lock you out of your own work. This is NOT a feature.
3) I use an OS to acomplish a task not to run software. With MS it seems that I HAVE to repurchase software just to handle simple tasks.
4) I do not wish to disable my system to make it secure.
5) ETC, etc, etc...
The only place that windows beats linux in usability is when the users are used to Windows. This also holds true for any other OS. If I wanted to get a job done I would have no trouble using windows, but I would probably start by loading another OS to save time in the long run. I still have original files that are over 10 years old and I can still work with them.
