How many people here have never had trouble with a driver on Windows?

Linux is harder to use because you have more choices. How many cars can you choose from? Choice is good.

How many desktops run Linux? I would say over 3%. How do I know? Because all the systems which I have are counted as 1. I only buy 1 copy. Where do they get their 3%? From sales. How many people only load one system with their CD? I don't know, but I know that I am not the only one. How did Linux acomplish this when other comercial systems failed, ie Be, NeXT, O/S2.....? Choice. Choice. Choice. CHOICE. Linux will not pass Windows in 3 years but it's allready passed apple acording to some estimates. It sure as hell giving Windows a run for it's money..../RANT

This is HOG WASH based on the study which is being conducted. These studies assume that a persone is 100% efficient 100% of the time. Now we all know that most companies plan training when they have downtime. They never hire someone to replace you when you are in training...do they? If you are salaried then it costs them no matter what work you do. The costs and assumptions that they make may or may not be true.

Now under the university program you have to load Windows or you have to load Linux/FreeBSD. I find it quicker to load the latter, but that is just me. I agree with you here. I purchased a HP scanner a little while back which claimed SCSI support for Apple and PC. After fighting with it for some time I contacted HP and was told I needed USB for the document feeder, even though the box claimed that it was SCSI compatible. My system at the time had no USB support but I could live with the manual feed for a while.

Recently I bought a new HP scanner. (The old one now works with SANE with FreeBSD...too many problem with their drivers). I took it out if the box. I loaded the dirvers and the apps. It did not work. I went to SANE and saw that there was poor HP support again for the HP. I packed it the box and returned it to the store. I bought an EPSON. I returned home and was up and running within 15 minutes.

The EPSON was less expensive. It had support from various locations and most of all its marketing was understated.
