You should also check out the LV series by Rocio Romero - www.rocioromero.com. It seems to be the only affordable modern prefab house available in the US. You see lots of concepts out there, but these you can actually buy & build. They ship the main parts to you on a flatbed, all the other parts (drywall, windows etc) you source locally. You should be able to build one for $150-200k, plus the land; that's pretty good for a cool modern house.

If you have 3g data the Google maps are good, but Navfree works for me. The last map update seems to have been in December so I hope they'll grab the updated OSM data sometime soon & I can see my changes reflected there.

As others have pointed out, this seems to be a storm in a teacup. If it leads to more participation in OSM, however, it'll be a good thing. I recently installed the Navfree android app (free onboard maps GPS, there's an IOS version too), and noticed a number of small inaccuracies in my neighborhood. Correcting them was really pretty easy; the maps around me already seem pretty usable, and with a bit more tweaking will be as good as any of the commercial alternatives. When I had first looked at it a couple of years ago the maps around me were pretty dire, so they've come a long way. House numbering seems to be the big remaining issue for navigation system use.

Does that mean everyone flying Los Angeles -> Fresno should go through customs? The fact that you connect to an internal domestic flight means this is the only way to make this work.

This is how it does work in Europe, though. I used to fly DC -> London -> Glasgow regularly and when the EU rules kicked in, you had to start going through customs at your final destination. In practice, this meant that everyone in Glasgow walked past a usually unmanned customs post. For the first little while it also meant that you would get to Glasgow, your bag would come on the next flight, and they'd have to pay a taxi to bring it to you. They fixed the transfer problems though.

I have no love for customs officials, but seriously, the level of paranoia on here is too much. Yes, I'm new here.

So how will you reduce the risk of someone next to you suddenly deciding to switch the lanes without checking that you're there? How do you reduce the risk of someone deciding he just has to pass the car in front of him even when there's incoming traffick? How do reduce the risk of someone deciding to test his engine and losing control?

It doesn't matter how good a driver you are; if someone else screws up bad enough, you're dead.

You can't eliminate the risk, but you certainly can reduce it. I have ridden motorcycles since I was 16 - I will often notice little clues that someone is about to do something stupid, and act on that before they have done it. If I'm passing someone, and their head twitches, I'm braking, and on numerous occasions they just pull right over to where I would have been had I not taken evasive actions. Most of my friends who are also long time motorcyclists have also honed this skill, and have also avoided potential situations because of it. One friend was stuck in a sudden slowdown and managed to duck to the side and avoid being rear ended because he was aware not only of the slowing traffic ahead of him but that the driver behind hadn't noticed it.

I get a little freaked out when I ride with "normal" car drivers, because their lack of awareness really seems amazing. It's like they aren't looking beyond the car right in front of them & are being continually surprised by what's happening around them.

Sure, there's always the chance that someone will still get you, but there's a lot of room to reduce risk out there.
