The FAQ is an educational tool. Some people don't even know that this stuff is pirated. Some bootleg packages are pretty darn convincing, and only telltake cues and sometimes even comparison to the real thing may be needed for people to spot them.

The licencees often don't have the time to crack down on the biggest sellers. Some licencees do take the time to join eBay's little rights-owner program and get pirated stuff cancelled, but not all.

Most of the pirated stuff is produced in other Asian countries where the government hasn't or can't sign the Berne Convention treaty, so piracy is technically legal (like Taiwan R.O.C) or the government looks the other way and only does a half hearted crack down when the owner complains These titles are imported by small-time dealers and distributors and there are simply too many.

The idiots at Wired certainly don't either.

There are two major frequencies used, 50Hz and 60Hz and probably several voltages. Europe is on 60Hz, at 220V. Japan is 60Hz at about 100V. USA, Canada 60Hz at about 120V. Of course there are other voltages, in the US I have access to 220V three phase, at 60Hz, and 440V three phase, same frequency. The voltage levels can be compensated by tranformers but it will be a long time before any region will convert to different frequencies, I'd say decades is a lower bound estimate unless politicians want a lynch mob at their gates. I have a lot of stuff that can use both frequencies, but I have a lot of stuff that can't

And let's not forget that transmitting electricity becomes more pointless the longer the distance it has to travel. Transmitting power from Maine to New York isn't such a bad idea, but Main to California is stupid, and transmitting over or through oceans is worse.

I know I wouldn't put up with a tiny screen, and I think the palm-types otherwise would have too small of a screen and too coarse of a DPI to put up with it. I would think that you'd need to carry batteries and chargers around, and for intn'l trips, multistandard charger and that can easily add up. I suppose one added benefit of a palm unit is that most are or can be backlit for dark times.

I can see the problems of reading on a palm machine being easily offset by getting the book for free, despite having to own $300 of hardware to read an eBook of some kind.

I can see the book industry and the other industries being leery about claims of not needing a distribution chain. First you'd need to raise an incredible level of traffic to the publisher's site, and basically break the consumer tendency to just buy books at a bookstore, most of which aren't beholden to a particular publisher so you get a large selection all in _one_ place without having to visit dozens of publisher sites. So you still need a dealer "network" of some sort.
