I certainly know who he is (he wrote the intresting "society of mind"), but I always figured him more of a philosophical AI-guy than a heavy-theory-guy. I've taken a lot of courses in AI and game theory, and he is never mentioned along with the greats... What field has he contributed to?
This could, of course, be a code word for antisemitism. The problem there is not that it is hate directed at a religion, but at a group of people. Big difference.
I think I even speak for most religious people when I say that there are more fundamentalist religious websites that scare me, offend me and can have far more dangerous consequences than any "anti-religious" stuff.
In this anal retentive community, how come I (a simple foreigner, no less) am the first to flame the editor for spelling the name "ceasar" like that? Bah! Truly a sad day for internet nitpicking.
It doesn't make any difference what MS has been charged with or convicted of, because they haven't been sentenced. No court has told microsoft that they can't sell their product anymore, so why should a county not be allowed to buy from them?
No court tells all convicts that they are banned from voting for life. If you are a convicted criminal, there are suddenly some areas in society where you lose priviliges. These areas are not decided by the judge doing the sentencing, they are decided by those who feel that people who break laws are untrustworthy in whatever the context may be. Even if a court does not give a sentence that say that the defendant may not work in this or that place, some workplaces may yet independently choose not to allow criminals.
Some countys have apparently made the choice that previously convicted companies are not good business-partners. This is not a sentence. This is a business decision.
The alpha-beta algorithm, which _everybody_ use, is very hard to make massively parallell (effectively). You can't just brute force this kind of exponential game. You are right about the hash tables, they will also be a problem.
I am actually having an exam on this subject in 30 mins. Guess I'll come loaded with _the latest_ developments... Seriously though - that the 250 m.y.a. extinction was not caused by a asteroid, but by volcanic activity in Siberia, has been the general opinion for quite some time.
...because it will be from www.calmpc.com (beware of the funny Korean English. Yikes!) It doesn't get any more quiet than that. Slashdot had a story about them a while ago, but now they have released the second version that can cool even the newest CPUs.
Star Trek started the myth about "sabot" in "sabotage" referring to shoes. This is just false. "Sabot" refers to the metal clamps used in railroads. Source
Voice interface is excellent for communication from a distance. When I'm sitting in my couch, I don't want to go all the way over to my computer to check trivial things like if I have mail, when the Simpsons is on, what I have scheduled for today, playing an mp3-album, etc, etc. I just want to tell my computer to do it from wherever I happen to be. If I ask for information, the computer can use text-to-speech to give it to me. I'm actually looking in to the possibility of setting up such a system for myself (mostly for hack-value, of course;). Just need decent open source voice recognition for a few pre-defined commands. I'll probably need a way to place a few (2-3) cheap microphones in my apartment and connect them (in series?) to my computer, as well.
The psychologist Csikszentmihalyi (I think I spelled it right...) calls that state "flow" and it probably is the same that a top athlete feels. You can enter it under virtually any activity that has well defined rules, the right difficulty and fast feedback on success and failure. Check out one of his books.
Snow White is actually analyzed a great deal in Jungian psychology. They see fairy tales as analogies for the different stages of life and the classical emotional problems that we face. Shouldn't listen too much to Jung though. He was most likely just a paranoid junkie with a bunch of equally fucked up pre-New Age followers.
Why use humans as batteries? It seems extremely implausable. I would much rather see that the reason that the machines keep the humans in VR is because some sort of fundamental "robot law" - not being able to kill humans, while at the same wanting to keep them out of the way.
Of course, the CIA can't go around trumpeting these successes, because it decreases the odds of them being successful in the future.
If they don't even want to tell about the times they've been right in the past, it is even less of a chance that they will tell the public a truthful prediction of the future (like this alledgedly is).
What the CIA says publicly will obviously have no correlation (neither positive nor negative) with what they really think is the truth. They will simply give statements that they think have a desired effect, either on the american public or on foreign governments. How could it be otherwise? This is not because they are "evil" or whatever. It is their job.
Do you really think that you for some reason know better than the CIA what's going on in the minds of China's rulers?
This is a strawman. I certainly do not think so, neither do anyone else. The real question is: Do you really think that you know what the CIA knows about the minds of the rulers of China? What would CIA possibly have to gain by being consistently truthful in what they say to you to you (about as much as if they were consistently lying, I suppose)?
The conclusion must be that to extract any information whatsoever from the CIA, you have to analyze what they say. Do they have anything to gain by lying about this matter? (Yes, a lot - More threats = more budget). Do they have anything to gain by being truthful (Sure - If they think it is a real threat, it is only good if the servers get prepared). This analysis give no reason to believe either one or the other. In other words, the article has almost zero informational content.
Simple, no? A bit of critical thinking will get you a long way.

A 'third'.
Just like a quarter of an hour is a 'quarter'.
Not that time, though...

I rarely laugh out loud when I read stuff, but for some reason I found that incredibly funny =).
Since I really liked some earlier songs with Moby, it saddens me to say that his latest album is just weak. Where did all the mellow melancholy go?

Read it upside down...
My impression was that mtd(f) is just an interesting novelty and that none of the commercial programs use it.
Can you present some evidence to the contrary?

Why use a dictionary when WordNet have all the information you could ever ask for )including stuff like synonyms)?

Yeah... like I would try to make sense of something posted by a guy with "Fnord" in his nick...
