Simply put there may be fast efficient tiny java programs out there but I don't see them.

If Java was as bad as you say it would NOT be so popular in embedded devices. There is a huge disconnect between the archaic concept of Java as a slow pig and the real world popularity of Java on small systems like printers and cell phones.

This is a very insightful view of what is a real problem with the current practice of medicine . There are many 'syndromes' that are considered to be triggered by lifestyle when actually there are deeper root causes. All too much of medicine is based on statistical studies that show correlations - and correlations do not in any way provide causality.

The real breakthrough in the discovery of a bacterial cause of ulcers is the spotlight it places on the worth of really finding the root cause of a problem rather than just hand waving and correlative studies. Hopefully the medical profession and medical research takes this lesson seriously because it provides a path to real progress in treatment of many debilitating serious chronic diseases. We spend too much time treating symptoms rather than auses and it drives the cost of medical care sky high.

If you look at the tech force in USA, you will that the majority of the really smart people, are non US citizens.

Who cares where somebody was born? The issue is not if the people who are going to manage this thing are born in one particular place or another, but rather do they have the technical capability. The US has been a magnet for the top technical talent in the world for the past 60 years. 80% of the Nobel Prizes awarded in the past 60 years have gone to people working in North America. The Internet and the vast bulk of the technologies that it depends on were invented by people who were working in the US. Many of whom were not born in the US.

  21. Hard as possible on purpose on Why Students Are Leaving Engineering · · Score: 1

This is the way engineering education has always been. In fact it is much easier now than it was 30 years ago. We didn't have fancy pants calculators and spreadsheets so we actually had to KNOW how to do even complex calculations by hand acurately and rapidly without these crutches.

Engineering should be made to be as hard as possible ON PURPOSE. The real world doesn't care if you try or not. The universe is subtle and tricksy, and nobody is going to spoon feed you the experience you need to make a technology work. There is only right and wrong when you build a solid rocket booster o-ring. If it is wrong BOOM. And there are MANY more wrong answers than right ones.

If you need to be spoon fed by professors to learn basic concepts how crappy an engineer will you be after graduation when the real world throws you non-idealized problems not in the textbook, and you need to be able to keep up with new technology on your own?

No, the real problem is that engineering is not valued or esteemed by our society. You need to have lots of Jack Kilbys and John Fenns for society to prosper. But if society doesn't value the hard work that it takes to achieve this level of achievement people aren't going to want to take on that kind of challenge. They will take their hard work and talent somewhere else, like medicine, finance or law.
