The company is reportedly considering whether or not they want to keep relying on Microsoft's software products.
Yes, that will be great for business. Everyone will rush to buy Asus netbooks with Linux. I love Linux as much as the next geek, but I don't see people buying a lot of Linux machines when other vendors are still selling Windows netbooks.
Omitted a word in my previous post that made it make even less sense than it should have.

AFAIK The Koch Foundation isn't the same as the Koch Brothers (the folks who donate to conservative political candidates.)
There are two Koch foundations, one founded by each of the infamous Koch Brothers. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this Koch foundation was the same one that provides funding for Nova (or did at one time).
I'm a little curious as to why, in a list of 5 organizations that funded this study, the headline and OP singled out Koch. Hoping for additional impact that wouldn't be achieved by just saying "Climate Change Skeptic Changes Mind"?
Modded negatively because (a) you didn't read through and understand the motive for the assault on Steve Mann (thus you are spreading FUD), and (b) you are trying to justify your ignorance with hearsay. Provide facts or state your case as opinion or just STFU.
Please enlighten me. I've seen several stories about the assault, but never anything about the motive. If you have a source that I haven't found, links or it never happened.
The photos were gathered by going to Apple retail stores and secretly installing an application on Macs that would snap a photo using the Mac's built-in webcam iSight every minute and uploading photos if a face of an unsuspecting customer was detected.
I suspect that's the tricky bit that brought down the wrath.
The patent is not limited to Exchange - it covers any implementation of meeting requests on a mobile device. Exchange is only given as an example of the broader class of "personal information managers (PIMs)" that the patent applies to:
PIMs typically comprise applications which enable the user of the mobile device to better manage scheduling and communications, and other such tasks. Some commonly available PIMs include scheduling and calendar programs, task lists, address books, and electronic mail (e-mail) programs. Some commonly commercially available PIMs are sold under the brand names Microsoft Schedule+ and Microsoft Outlook and are commercially available from Microsoft Corporation of Redmond, Wash. For purposes of this discussion, PIMs shall also include separate electronic mail applications, such as that available under the brand name Microsoft Exchange.
Given that, wouldn't Blackberry (1999) or the Palm Pilot (1996) be prior art?
Filed: April 10, 1998
Blackberry, no.
I'm not familiar enough with the early generations of Palm's devices to say whether they had a network calendaring app pre-'98.
Damned lucky they didn't add voice commands. My flatmate would have hated me if I had spent a month sitting around the living room shouting "Fuuuus Ro DAAAAH!!!" every few minutes.
I live in downtown Seattle and sometimes the noise is a bit much. The worst are the hogs that are designed to be incredibly noisy. People need to WATCH where they're going (look both ways, morons) and LOOK at the speedometer. And no, I'm not moving to some suburb or the country. It's not a living nightmare or anything, but I hardly see any good reason, other than just supporting stupidity, to actually put work into creating noise.
The issue I've heard associated with this was the blind. You know, those folks who can't look both ways.
You like hard sciences but applied to psychology? Why not social sciences, or the arts? Shoulda thought of this before applying.
Until the OP's interest in hard sciences yields a time machine, we'll just have to deal with what's happening now and in the future. But really, helpful comment though...
Yeah, I couldn't agree more. We should have waited until air travel was practical before settling the Oregon Territory. Certainly, 4-7 months was way too long to travel.
Of course, I acknowledge that the comparison is far from perfect. It wasn't in low/zero gravity conditions for 7 months, but I think the point still holds. In the early days of settling a new frontier one can expect a long trip getting there. That can be made a bit better with artificial gravity technologies (see the Nautilus-X design that will never be built), but it's still going to be rough.
Unpleasant? Definitely!
Worth it? I think so. It expands our knowledge, inspires our young, and drives innovation.
Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.
And there you have it. And now, gratuitous pictures of penises...
...the FDA will team up with employers and insurers to determine your final paycheck based upon what you eat.
I admit that government has a role to play in a civilised society, but is this it? And will enforcement be based upon eating in a workplace cafeteria? Will they be examining poo to be sure the employee is on the straight-and-narrow and therefore deserving of his paycheck?
The "Virtual Embassy" nonsense was a political stunt from the start. Did anybody seriously think it would not be blocked by the Iranian government? Politicians aren't known for being very clever, but even they must have seen this coming.
Don't be so hard on them. Of course they could kill well over 1000 people on US soil in a year. All they need to do is bomb the bloody security checkpoints. There are hundreds of people in close quarters in an unsecured area, just waiting in line to be groped and irradiated. Put a bomber in the middle of that crowd and you've got the biggest vulnerability in the whole damned air travel system.
I bought a PC in 2004, and when I opened IE (to download Firefox) I was immediately warned by the factory installed Norton product that IE was a potentially dangerous program and that they recommended I not allow it to connect.
I'm not a Christian anymore, but when I was I was always irritated by the idea that charity can only come through government. If you don't support $INEFFICIENT_PROGRAM then you aren't following Jesus' command to love your neighbor. That's silly, and just plain dishonest.

equal rights amendment was not ratified by the states so no it's not in our constitution.
What does this have to do with women's rights?
At least the damage will be restricted to one company, albeit a major one.
No, this just means one company will make bank licensing the method to other companies.

Pretty cool, but didn't we have this back in the 80's with the uber-futuristic concept of these things called Mainframes and Terminals?

It's not for security, it's for physical safety. WiFi causes cancer, you know.

Six months to anywhere is too far.

Hey, it got a doodle! And the doodle points to... "a whole page for it". But no, it's cool. Reality can wait for your silly Google-hate.

No, MySpace is at war Amazon.
"We have always been at war with Amazon. Tom Anderson is watching you."

I disagree.
Still in Alpha, so a bit crap, but it'll get there soon enough.
