  3. Re:Never do "upgrades"... on Upgrading to Ubuntu Edgy Eft a "Nightmare" · · Score: 1

All excellent reasons. I have just recently experienced a failed upgrade going from Slackware 10.2 to 11 using slapt-get. I have successfully used slapt-get for dist upgrades before, but have found them to be successful due to use of a 2.4 kernel. I'd moved to a 2.6 kernel, and when I attempted the 10.2->11 slapt-get dist upgrade, the first reboot went horribly. Changes in the hotplug init scripts caused many things not to be run, or utilities filenames changed, or were no longer existant (upgradepkg won't overwrite existing rc files, even if the format of said files has changed). Instead of wasting time renaming *.new files, retweaking, etc, I just did a fresh install. I'm not impressed at all with Slackware running 2.6, and I've been a Slackware user for 10 years.

I use an M-Audio Delta 44, and can broadcast Skype calls live to an Icecast stream server, works excellently. This uses the Winamp Oddcast v.3 dsp plugin. The plugin uses the cards mixer out, and since the card has 4 channel simultaneous input, I can play music AND talk on Skype when necessary. Also, Winamps disk writer plugin can write wav files of the calls to disk.

With a ten month winter in its infancy, the frozen garbage won't decompose (or smell), so the municipal workers union won't have the sympathy of the electorate behind them while they try to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement."

  13. Politics on New NASA Admin Griffin Cleans House · · Score: 2, Insightful

While its certainly pleasant to see altruism be attempted, if the funding comes from the feds, not private sector, politics/bureaucracy must be involved. I wish the new administrator well, but I hope he's not so naive to think he can rid NASA of the dead weight of politicos and entrenched senior bureaucrats. No way in hell NASA will ever be free of fed interference when it relies solely on fed money.

... So the only logical answer I can think of to end all this suing and gestapo-like behavior is to get something truly done about the RIAA's monopolistic actions (attacking them for price fixing is good)...

So is boycotting. But tell that to mom and pop sheep and their kids who are more concerned with possessing the latest lameness from Brittney Spears, or Korn.

A person is smart, people are stupid, this is a given, and why grassroots efforts are so hard so get started. Its no secret people will not protest against things because complacency is human nature. People fear change. Only if the transgression is grievous enough will people take notice, and stand up for themselves.

While the *AA certainly isn't faultless, neither are consumers. Relying on the government to legislate business models is not the right direction.

This is supposed to be a free market economy, so people need to speak with their dollars. Boycott *AA labels/distributors/artists. But don't negate the effect of the boycott by downloading copyrighted material. Then, and only then, will *AA change.

A successful boycott will show *AA a drop in p2p activity, AND a drop in their total sales, thus negating any potential claim by *AA that p2p is hurting sales when in actuality its their business model and/or their pricing thats solely responsible for the drop in sales.

And please remember, *AA are not the actual companies releasing content, they're merely representatives of member companies, their mouth pieces, and legal reps.
