I agree with you about large company decisions remaining unchanged. But I have not ever seen a significant correlation between slipping release dates and improved quality - in fact, my experience says the opposite. Maybe SQL Server will be the exception, but I doubt it.

Insurance. Some companies are protecting their clients from SCO IP suits, why not pay insurance to a third party to CYA rather than to SCO?
If one of the big insurance firms analyzed SCO's suit and calculated the odds of SCO winning, they might be able to offer insurance to these companies at a similar price to the extortion being paid to SCO. Everyone wins, companies can say they did their due diligence and SCO does NOT get a dime until they prove themselves in court.

The reason is simple. You have assumed that adding your name to the DNC means that you would never buy something over the phone. Although that seems logical, it's a bad assumption. To stereotype a bit, think of a husband adding the number to the DNC because the wife keeps buying the "crap" over the phone. Telemarketers want to keep talking to the wife.

MS doesn't want to be left out of the living room. MS believes that the "Home PC" is a dying market and most people want a "Media Station" that does everything. I haven't seen specs for XBox2, but imagine if these include the same functionality as Tivo, with the ability to surf the web / read email, all for the price of a game console and a wireless keyboard/mouse
I know most of my families Home PCs would start gathering dust pretty quick.

Any media that associates this virus with Linux/OSS should be discredited. Life is simpler when I remember most idiots are simply idiots.

Umm, you might want to check your facts. COM has been around a lot longer than java and solves a COMPLETELY different problem. .NET is what competes with java. COM always competed with CORBA for remoting, but most of that fight has moved to Web Services. COM replaced OLE2 and DDE and those technologies sucked to work with.
I don't think COM ever had a security model - maybe that's your point? Are you complaining that MS reuses components or that Outlook renders HTML documents? Would you be happy if MS created a different way to render HTML in email rather than using the IE engine?

I think Linus should be very careful when he starts discussing the law. Look at the quote he uses:
"The term 'financial gain' includes receipt, or expectation of receipt, of anything of value, including the receipt of other copyrighted works."
I think it's a tough argument that releasing code under the GPL includes receipt, or expectation of receipt, of anything of value.
When I release code under the GPL, there is definitely no receipt of anything of value, and I would argue that there is no expectation of receipt of anything of value.
The fact that copyrighted works are included in anything of value does not validate the GPL in any way.
Explain to me how I get more access to copyrighted works (my financial gain according to Linus) by releasing code under the GPL.
