Not really, I started reading when I was two. If we had owned a PC back then I could have probably figured it out. My parents letting me on the thing unsupervised would have been a whole separate issue however.
I have ~5MBPS DSL thru our (small, local mom & pop) phone company & I live 15 *miles* from the nearest town (population 8000) so the ILECs shouldn't have any issues doing the same.
Not to mention while the US wasn't a planned economy in the 50 & 60's, it also wasn't the bastion of free or fair trade like the previous poster would like you to believe.

Oddly enough, they *are* upgrading infrastructure in Arkansas & Kansas. I'm creating maps for our field guys to put walk-out notes on as I type. I've been doing this on & off for 5 months now. Said notes will later be drafted / drawn / input into their GIS cable management system, GNIS.
They aren't living the American dream, they are mercenaries pumping the dollars they don't spend here for necessities back into their home countries.
H1Bs are a subversion of a "fair market" (free markets don't exist, so STFU Adam Smith). They aren't citizens, they have no loyalty to the US & frankly for the most part, we don't need them here. If they really wamted to live the "American" Dream they would be getting either citizenship or resident alien status.
If you live in the what used to be a BellSouth territory, AT&T has to offer "naked" DSL as a requirement for the FCC letting them merge back with Bell. The phone monkeys may give you the run around about it but be firm & keep asking for managers if you get a moron.
Are they kicking & screaming about it being a private account or something? I mean it doesn't sound like they are hiding anything by publicly asking people to use it to contact them temporarily.
The administration that is disgraced, out the door & is in the process of having a lot of the bad, illegal things that they pulled in their tenure reversed or revoked?
This isn't about the US. We have the option of removing our government by force if needed. That option has never been played & hopefully will never have to be played. But we still have that option & our government, deep down, knows it.
