To everyone who has had something useful to say, thank you. Your suggestions are what I was looking for. I have found a few resources in my own searching's, but felt that having the eyes and minds of the /. crowd helping would yield far greater results.

As for the rest of you: I have long wondered how many /.'ers were real sysadmins and hackers and who wasn't. Thank you for removing all doubt I may have had about your status.

Several of you have tried to make an argument that I am under qualified for the job I've taken. I read over my submission again, and at no point do I say "I've never seen one of these new-fangled Windows machines before". My specialty has been with implementing Linux solutions to Windows networks via Samba. I have a fair grasp of Windows technologies and am quite comfortable in said environment. However, it would be foolhardy to assume that I know all there is to know about Redmond's offering.

It is made clear to me by your statements that either you are wishful thinkers straining to install Corel's distro or that you haven't the self motivation necessary to stay competitive in this field. To the later, I look forward to cleaning up your network once you've been dismissed.

I realize this is a bit off topic, but I felt that it would be unfair to those in similar straits watching if I didn't address these comments. Now, as promised, the links which I have found most useful.

  13. Why I don't buy on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

I haven't bought a new album in over 3 years. Do I have a massive and evergrowing mp3 collection? No. Am I the ring leader in an international organization hell-bent on destroying the RIAA by making legal copies outlawed by illegal laws, sell them for their actual worth, and thus recieve all my selections from underling efforts? Hardly. Although...

I don't buy new albums because I have a radio. I know that if I turn on the radio, that one new song I like will be on. In heavy rotation. Right after Creed. And it will be on every station I change to until I can't stand it anymore.

Why should I buy Moby's "18"? I've heard "We Are All Made Of Stars" about a hundred million times, and it keeps getting more contrived every single time I hear it, not to mention that he's sucked since going mainstream; so what do you think? Do you think I should still go out and buy?

One last thing: why not just drop the facade and call "Alternative" music "Mainstream"?

So what's the deal here. I've noticed a trend in these " must be stopped for the children's sake" causes. They seem to all stem from small towns in midwestern states (These witness', arcades in Indiana). So again I ask, what gives? Is there just a massive designate of the nations geography that needs to recieve a good smack upside the head for not being able to figure out how to manage their children? You take New York, LA, Chicago and everyone is fine. I'm just...I don't know. Ticked would be the word. Has anyone else noticed this?

After reading this article, I realized that I had no idea what my budget was for training. It was just ask and ye shall recieve. So I asked. Turns out, there isn't one. My entire IT budget is a bit of a slush fund. I work for the parent company with 6 subsidiaries. Each child company sets aside about 50,000 a year and my training, expenses, activities, purchases, whatever just gets pulled from whoever's budget it benifits the most. This makes for a 300,000 dollar a year budget! On top of that, my paycheck comes out of the operations budget for the parent company and is seperated from the above mentioned amount. So this now presents the question, am I working for the mafia?

I actually took a class in high school where we did that. We had the entire semester to spec out, build, install, setup, and network our machines (we worked in pairs, the old pc's wer 486's and quite done by fall '97). We shifted between reviewing protocols/standards and working towards our end goal. After a few weeks, we were holding Quakefests and making some extra cash with our newfound skills. To sum up, it worked for us and I'm willing to bet will work for your kids. Then again, you could just start of with some pron and let it flow from there.
