  1. Slashdot convention? HELL YEAH!!! on Would You Attend a Slashdot Convention? · · Score: 1

This is a brilliant idea. Why hasn't it been suggested so gracefully before?

I think we should try an annual Slashdot Convention in rotating cities so that different people can go each year (face it, air travel is expensive and we live in a big country!).

But, after the annual OFFICIAL convention, smaller local conventions should be held so that what was shared at the larger convention can be shared to all those that couldn't go.

This could become like a fraternity with smalled chapters in each major metro area or region.

    Let's do it!

  2. school sponsored gaming is great idea, IMO on Games in High School? · · Score: 1

If the kids are willing to stay or come back onto school property and be supervised by school faculty, this gaming over the LAN idea should be saluted by parents the world over. Parents will know where their kids are; kids will stay out of the normal trouble. And it may be a way to introduce kids who aren't computer savvy to more computer use. It will surely improve keyboard skills!

  3. security is security; it can always be broken on 'Think Tank' Issues Microsoft-Funded Troll · · Score: 1

Any security system can be broken, whether digital or not. Not to be rude, but look at 9/11 ... that was breach of national security.

So open source wares may have less security built in, so what? So Microsoft is always issuing security updates, so what?

The most popular applications and their securities will always be attacked first because the most damage can be inflicted there.

My point is that no security is perfect. So for MS to attack open source is just plain a waste of time. It's simply a public relations stunt directed toward big business, the gov't and uneducated citizens.

As for people that cry out about MS's security flaws, just expect there to be these flaws is such a highly used and complex application. I'm not saying MS is anywhere near on top of security updates as it should be, but flaws and new hacks must be anticipated in today's digital industry.

  4. The moon and Mars are free space on Taking Issue With The Outer Space Treaty · · Score: 1

In general, any space agency will likely seek approval from the U.N. and any space-faring nation prior to creating a settlement or base on the moon or Mars. While seeking such approval, what ever laws or treaties currently exist will be thrown out.

It is my opinion that the moon and Mars are free space. No property owner or country can claim ownership at this point. Think of it as a the new colony(ies).

The main thing though is that we are many years away from extra-plantary settlement, so NASA and the world have plenty of time to sort these ideals out.

  5. allow science in the public eye, not underground on Cloned Organs Demoed in Laboratory · · Score: 1

I have three points to make here:

    (1) If governments keep banning this and banning that in regards to embrionic and cloning research, all that is accomplished is the nightmare of an underground science community, "evil" doctors. Think about pharm. companies that have "secretly" tested drugs on humans ... = disaster! By pushing research into secret or underground labs, ethical or moral policing of this research will become impossible and the sci-fi stories will come true.

    (2) For the North American Slashdot reader: If the U.S. and Canada continue to stifle this research, our countries will simply fall behind in this research, fall behind all the other countries in Europe and Asia that will continue on with this research. This is not a good thing. I know this sounds high and mighty from an American, but this scenario is NOT a good thing. If you live in the U.S. or Canada, YOU MUST EMAIL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES!

    (3) I already saw many replies to this post from people who are suffering for syndromes or diseases that not just COULD be erradicated by this research, but WOULD be erradicated by this research. If anybody wants to bring ethics and morals into this debate, they need to be willing to look at all vantage points. What morally outweighs the other? I think it is within our moral responsibility to continue quickly and strongly with this research in order to cure those who suffer. And if that means using bio waste (i.e., dead fetus tissue) in order to conduct that research, so be it. If that means paying willing participants (i.e., women and their own bodies) to assist in this research, so be it. Arguing against this research is no more sound than a pro-LIFEr KILLing an OBGYN and his staff at a clinic.

  6. Whatever! on The Empire Stumbles · · Score: 1

Actually Star Wars is coming out on top. Oh, and as for that 4-day vs. 3-day comparison, let's also mention that Star Wars is in about 700 less theaters across the U.S.

I don't think this is even an issue though. Who cares? I simply enjoy the Star Wars saga. I don't care if it beats Spiderman or Harry Potter or Matrix.

  7. this is a good use of cloning on Cenozoic Park: Cloning the Tasmanian Tiger · · Score: 1

I think this is a good use of cloning technology. It's not dangerous like Jurassic Park, but we still need to be careful not to create a monster in the cloning process. While I'm all for cloning, I do fear the mistakes that are sure to come out of it, especially mutations.

  8. work vs. home on How Effective are Ergonomic Keyboards? · · Score: 1

At home, I have an older Microsoft ergonomic keyboard on a level surface and use a Logitech trackball.

At work, choices are obviously limited (this company could care less about OSHA!) but at least my keyboard is on one of those under-desk platforms that allows me to tilt the keyboard down and away from me which is very comfortable on my wrists. Otherwise, both the keyboard and the mouse are your standard crap.

I believe that ergonomic keyboards are very comfortable and help prevent cramping of the wrists just because your wrists are in a more natural spaced apart position. At work on this normal keyboard, my wrists can cramp up.

As for the mouse though, my trackball is more less demanding my my wrists and clicking fingers than your stand mouse. Now, some of the newer Logitech mouses are longer and more comfortable, but a trackball really allows your hands to comform naturally to the device.

  9. Re: Did anybody listen to the music? on CDs Want To Be Free · · Score: 1

There was another sight just like this one that I "ordered" two or three CDs from about two years ago. Pretty good music.

As for the new site, the rock/alt selections are average and their is one country female vocalist that sounds good. The best selections are probably in the Jazz section. Jazz isn't what it used to be, so dont' dismiss it!

  10. this is not worthy of patent protection at all... on Pop-Under Ads Patented · · Score: 1

A couple lines of open-source code is in now way worthy of patent protection. If the Feds allow this patent to go through, it once again proves (1) how outdated and ridiculous current patent and copyright laws are, and (2) only hints at the payoffs that are happening at the U.S. Patent Office.

  11. about time we realized the commercial interest on Study Shows Large Space Tourism Market · · Score: 1

It's about damn time we started realizing the potential for commercial investment in space. There is so much money to be made "out there." Sure it requires a lot of new technology and a lot more money to get this industry rolling, but we need to educate the public and our kids, our politicians, and corporate big-wigs of the benefits that are awaiting us in orbit and beyond.

The Lone Gonemen and several other peeps were in the series finale as Mulder's visions.

I liked how the finale brought a lot of things together, but the finale still left entirely too much unanswered, as if to say, "the X-Files will be back." But it won't.

I'm not one of those people that goes around saying this sucked, that sucked, but this series finale was a complete waste of two hours for me.

  18. The real question here? on Disconnecting · · Score: 1

After several hours spent requesting cancellation of two ISP accounts, did you still receive charges on your next month's credit card statements?

My wife, before we were married, had an AOL account and it took up to 6 months for them to finally stop charging her credit card.

My recommendation to anybody that pays for their Internet access via auto charges to your credit card, after calling the ISP to cancel, immediately call your credit card bank and have them block any further charges from that ISP. What's the ISP gonna do? Terminate you? Oh yeah! That's the intention!

When I switched from Erols/RCN to Cox Cable, Erols was saintly. I called, immediately got a cust.serv. rep and immediately had my account cancelled. When he asked why I was cancelling, I mentioned my new Cox Cable and he didn't argue that answer.

  19. Re:why plan for a round trip? on Bill In U.S. House Plans Manned Mars Mission · · Score: 1

I agree. The people they would commit to such a mission would be of such high mental stability, that asking them to stay on Mars is not a stupid thing to suggest.

Personally though, I don't think we are anywhere near ready to send people to Mars. There is really no need at this time.

First we need to set up a station on our Moon, not to mention completing the Int'l Space Station. Then move onto asteroids and other planets/moons.

Let the robots explore Mars for now.

  20. If I could go back and do it again.... on System Administrators - College or Career? · · Score: 1

In a dream world where you know what you need to do before you do it ... in other words, if I could go back in time and tell myself what to do, just as you are askign us to do here ... I would have double majored in Business Management and Computer Science (figure on 4.5 years with summer school), and at the same time would have gotten my certs. Masters optional, depending on how your career goes.

What did I do? I screwed around in highschool when I should have been teaching myself C prog and planning my future a little better. I ended up getting my BS in Business Mgmt. in 3.5 years at a ho-hum school (GMU).

Luckily, I was a senior editor at the student newspaper, so I was able to get a great job in PR right out of college. The job happened to require HTML and graphics experience, so from there I moved into a career as a ColdFusion dev'er.

We could all recommend to you what to do if you want to be a well-paid sys.admin., but in the end, it's your choice and how the cards are dealt.

  23. I worked for a newspaper; this is BAD practice! on Online News Stories that Change Behind Your Back · · Score: 1

Whether you consider it good practice or simply a limitation of print, rewriting a story without citing that you have done so is bad, bad business practice as far as new publication standards and ethics go.

Sure, with a print newspaper, you can't rewrite an article, cause well, ink if permanent. That's what the corrections box and/or letters to the editor pages are for ... to rewrite a piece of a story or note differences with the story, respectively. And it would look really bad if a newprint changed a printed story online without citing the changes. People would catch on.

But with online only publications, there is no newsprint to compare to. Sure, Google may have a cache of the story's original text and readers may have print outs, but still, it's much easier for online only pubs to rewrite an article without a notification of doing so.

Now, there are some sites that do state at the top of an article that the story has been updated, and that's fine, but for CNN/Money managing editor Allen Wastler to say "there is nothing wrong with this practice" is bullshit!
