  1. Definatly! on Ximian Desktop Installer, Red Carpet, and MonkeyTalk · · Score: 1

Although I feel that things like this should be at the distribution level, when you install it, rather than as a seperate 'add on'.. but yes, if I have a GUI (I use Debian's GNOME2 incidently) then I really should beable to point and click, rather than bring up a console, extract the source, and do the usual and ./configure; make; make install.. people that want to tweak should beable to edit what ever script though but Ximian's Red Carpet is definatly a way to global world domination, without nuking Redmond!

I wouldnt particularly protest about a low bandwidth ad applet that I could have on my GNOME task bar. If it was totally unobtrusive, and just displayed a small low bandwidth banner, with no extra annoying fluff then I wouldnt mind it running, I have enough space for that. As long as it didnt interfere with how my non ad operated desktop is, (and only used 20k of bandwith every minute.. if even that) then I dont see what the problem is?

  10. Re:DVD value CD on Harry Potter, Macrovision and Economics · · Score: 1

I think the MPAA is (slightly) smarter than the RIAA as the retail/cost ratio of DVDs is not as insane as CDs. Many DVDs can be found for under $10.

Over here in the UK, most new releases are around £20 - £25. If you are very lucky and buy from a place like Amazon you might beable to get a new release for £18. Older DVDs have started to come down to around £10 - £16 though, and when I say old.. I'm meaning films such as 'Batman'. Although HMV recently did a 'buy one get one free on selected titles' which was excellent.

I'd still like to beable to buy new releases for £10, but I'm just a cheapskate I guess! What is the retail/cost ratio of a DVD btw?

But how many people buy a book because they have heard one chapter and liked it and want the rest? Noone I know of.. often book sales increase due to films coming out etc *cough* Lord of the Rings *cough* but its not the same as being exposed to a song on the radio day in and day out!

  15. Re:strange relationship between Windows and Linux on Microsoft Loses Appeal To Shut Down LindowsOS · · Score: 2, Insightful

The more I read about "Lindows" and other wannabe Windows retrofittings for Linux, the more I wonder about the psychological health of the (wannabe Windows) Linux community.

Why must Linux define itself through Windows? It's good enough to stand on its own, last I heard...

That's a rediculous idea! Windows has an awful lot of features that I and many other people deem usefull. I don't want to have an arguement on 'timelines' here, but just because Windows has a GUI interface should we abandon it? The same with the CLI.. should that go too? Just because its similar to Windows?

Or should Linux 'embrace and extend', 'borrowing' things from Windows and making them better (it's imperitive that it should be better, as if it's the same or worse, we should just use Windows in the first place..)!

I personally hate having to switch between Windows and Linux, I only ever hit Windows because despite what everyone seems to thing, DVD playing with Linux is completly shit, plus games run faster :/

Tagging the word Windows on the end of RedHat is just plain stupid though imho, it's like those low budget 'rip-off' items of merchandise etc that are similar to the original but just cant cut it.. and we know Linux is better than that!

It sure may be better for the environment but its like a tax on electronics which are where most of (imho and circumstances) the commercial innovations lay. I doubt itll really make much difference in the grand scheme of things as it will just infiltrate its added price into the component industry.

Although imho the fact that the American market is going to cost more aswell is a complete pisstake, as the Americans wont have to pay any extra.. just us Euro's.. this is just the corperations exploiting this to make a fast buck out of you yanks, which will (seeing as you out number us) probably easily gain back any costs the encounter due to this new Euro legislation!
