I think the interesting point of comparison would be to see how the system requirements might change under a Linux setup. This article lists a 800mhz CPU, for example. Under Linux, could you get away with significantly less than that? I've got a 300mhz AMD K6-2 that I'd love to find some use for...
Do you even use Linux? Do you regularly find that your system runs 3 times faster compared to having Windows installed on the exact same hardware? No? Ok then, stop being a retard!
I managed to get XML handling working fine using libxml++ for my project. It was easy, quick and painless, and that was with using source code examples aswell!
For it to have been any easier, it would have most likely required magic!
This book is utter pants! I guess if you are having trouble with MS Word you might learn something from it.. but essentially it is just a listing of ports, services, some old outdated exploits and various viruses and trojans, padded out with loads of source code.
The communication protocols section is basic at best, just enough to explain to the layman what is going on
There is no content that couldnt be easily found when googling for 'warez hax0ring viri' or viewing some online university networking notes
Serious waste of money factor here folks, and I really wouldnt post any more of this guys reviews to the front page! He must have clearly got more than just a free copy of this book for his troubles!
I'd rather play Starsphere which does work in all browsers, and is a free online mmorpg where you control a planet and it's space fleet and go up against thousands of other players.
I've been using GNOME for 6 years. I think the only reason I haven't switched to KDE yet is because of the length of time I've been using it, and because of Evolution.
The lack of a decent Fileselector basically speaks volumes about GNOME:/
Changing to KDE3.1 will probably mean dropping Debian for Gentoo though, as they still have KDE issues don't they?
JWZ is not just a comical genius, he says it like it is. For some video playback might be ok, say if you have Xine, MPlayer and GStreamer installed so you can cover all the different video formats, but even with them installed I found it hard to play dvds, often needing to specify which vob at a time to play, anyone who has dvds of concerts, e.g. Metallica S&M, will know how much of a pain that is.
3 media players that dont really work is never going to help Linux conquer the desktop. MS only has one, that does work!
Oh, I didn't realise the recording software used the line-in of the soundcard to get the audio? I guess if that's the case then it would make recording multiple shows a bit difficult.
After all, each tuner card probably needs its own sound card... what else is involved?
Each TV card doesn't need it's own soundcard, the TV card's have a line out, so the lineouts from all TV cards could all be plugged into one large multitap which in turn is plugged into the soundcards line in.
as we aren't a bunch of 'Anonymous Coward' toting pussys!
This would have been nice last year...

But I'm flying with GStreamer atm and couldnt be happier. Also Xine and MPlayer are top quality too. Especially when used on conjunction with interfaces like Totem, I really couldnt ask for much more! DVD playback is also coming on strong!
Off the top of my head I cant think of anything (apart from DRM) that WMPlayer can do that any of the above can't do anyway? [conspiracy]Maybe that's the point.. this is a cunning plan to get DRM onto Linux:)[/conspiracy] Anyway, by the time it's available the other Linux media players will have either caught up or be better I expect.
I've released a new project based on mono called mod_haydn, an
Apache module that allows you to run MSIL bytecodes under Apache 1.3.
Currently, the Apache Request, Translation and Authentication
handlers are tested and working; from within these handlers you can
also access a good part of the Apache API.
Was rendering speed ever a problem, in either Opera or IE? Back when I used a double-digit MHz processor maybe, but even on a Pentium II 333 I don't give page rendering speed a second thought.
Read the article. The engine was re-written primarily so that Opera would be more compatible with DOM and alot more future proof. The speed increase is a bonus.
I've managed to download the game in under 30 mins with a 56k modem!
I remember back in the day, when all this was fields, real men programmed in Cobol and simply uttering the phrase Slashdot Effect was enough to make any sane SysAdmin turn into a gibbering puddle of jelly and spend the rest of his life in rehab:/
You kids nowadays with your fancy broadband, useless:/
The large companies are apparently lobbying governments again about the shortage of skills, and how employing from overseas is the only way to make up the shortfall, whilst statistics show that ~45% of IT consultants, people in the industry etc are currently unemployed.
Ironically, careers advisers are suggesting that we look abroad for work!!:)
Doing something like this in future as standard could conciderably reduce the /. effect!
Dont they normally have some kind of click through license?
"Do you agree to our terms and conditions YES | No"
Kind of thing?

I hate it when other people say it, and saying this now is leaving a bitter taste in my mouth(?), but..
If you don't like RedHat's EOL policy, choose a different distro or maintain it yourself etc. etc. yadda yadda yadda
I chose Debian ages ago anyway so naaaaaaaa :p

Although, you can play Div-X on a Dreamcast which is probably just as quiet and cheaper!
Although, OK, you do have to do stuff>/b> so 90% of the population will never get it!

Starsphere is a webbased mmorpg that is 100% free that has been running for ages and has a huge player base and community!
Clearly independant developers can survive!

2003 will be the year for linux \o/

This is most excellent news!
Is it possible to make web applications with Mono that are served with Apache or something? And are their any GTK-C# bindings out yet?
Also, is anyone actually using Mono for any projects atm, or is it just a case of 'work in development' which will never be widely used anyway?
cool :)

but aslong as you have SMS itll be ok!
but I love Galeon for all its worth! If Mozilla ripped off galeon in relation to everything, it would improve it no end!
Only criminal hackers will have exploits!!
'Good one!'

DVDs though? :)
RealNetworks will begin offering Helix's client source code within 90 days
It doesn't mention linux/etc though.. so is this an OpenSource Windows app? And what will the license be like? Will we beable to port it?
Questions questions questions!
