I am the IT Manager at a Senior school here it the good old UK. Recently we had OFSTED (The Goverment inspectors in) and decide that we are a bit crap and put us into whats know as Special Measures.
We have been in that for a while now and things are improving - mostly because the Teachers are scared shitless of losing their jobs.
One thing that happens when you go into special measures is you get loads of money thrown at you. The Senior Management have decided that every room that is used by a teacher also needs to be a IT suite. Now we have gone and ordered 50 laptops with pc card wifi cards (they will be stolen) and 4 waps per room. wtf? They did not consult me becuase I am just a figurehead and screwdriver guy as my job title is a joke so they end up with some compnay ripping them off.
What will this solve? nothing. Teaching is getting better as we have got some good new teachers in and the crap ones are appling for jobs else where. But good old senior management think its the bees knees. All it will do in fact is make one of my technicians lifes hell as they run around this large site solving stupid little problems and the kids will be distracted and so bang. there goes ya improvements.
So now the recording associations are going to think that the following is their most popular artist.
teen anal cum xxx hot
God help the record stores when a kid asks for that!
I had a Palm IIIe and the exact same thing happened to me, i fell out of my pocket when I was sat in a low chair onto the floor and -POW- big crack in screen.
I got store credit and purchased a new CDRW drive. Glass screens in PDA's has put me off but I really do want that new Sony CLIE with the fold round screen and camerea (looks like a tricorder from enterprise)
Oh well, aside from that my only ever PDA worked fine.
2Mbits/sec is the fastest DSL you can get (an Pipex are around the cheapest at 140 UKP / Month) and NTL (spit!) is trialing a IMbit/sec cable link, but NTL are shite and are about to go bust.
We have a NTL Dialup account (free with the TV) and its shit, disconnects are random, their DNS servers hardly ever work, so would I have broadband from them? No.
Seeing as my Pipex 512Kbs connection is fast and currently connected at 576Kbs I am happy.
Oh and don't you just love NTL's 128Kbs broadband connection!!! What?
Ok, I am getting of the soap box now..... ...
OUCH!
BANG!
...There!
See ya
By the way, Halo lags because the Xbox is shite...try a GameCube with DSL or even better Counterstrike!!!! Yeehaw
I was appointed Network Manager at a senior school (high school for you US people?) and they had been through 4 network technicians when I was appointed and the network was in (and still mostly is) in a state.
Well now that I have some staff (I had no technicians when I started) the problems are being sorted out! Luckily a company that runs filters and port blocking so p2p isn't a problem provides the schools broadband Internet connection.
The desktops all run Windows NT with policies in place so that only authorised applications can be run. This means that they can't run limewire et all but we can!!! Hurrah for power!!!
Whilst he may have voted for Bush (like there was a *good choice*) he has a point.
I don't like a lot of thing but that does not mean that these things should be censored. Certain things are *bad* really bad, like child porn and so on, but unless this is being thrust upon you then why does it need to be censored?
The guy that gets his kicks by viewing amateur porn (or whatever) is not doing any harm by visiting the site that provides it. He (or she) is only doing harm if they try to force this viewpoint on other.
When governments get involved in censorship they will censor what *they* think needs censoring and more often than not you get a knee jerk reaction and BANG censors go up without thinking how it really works.
Computer Games don't inherently make kids violent (they usually have flaws in their mental make up) and Porn sites don't create rapists. Yes I know that's a really bad generalization but what the hell it's the way I feel.
I thought I heard on the radio this morning that the laws on in effect as an "emergency measure" - guess because it's not peace time anymore they can do what they want.
Should the SA government be allowed to do this? No! There may be no inalienable rights to internet access everybody should have the rights to free speech. Now if a country allows the Internet *at all* then they should not censor it, otherwise it just becomes a tool for the government.
I do fear that the more the 21st century rockets towards the 22nd the more we are going to be fighting to keep our civil liberties.
Seeing as the UK has just passed draconian antiterrorism laws (detention without trial) how long is it before we get a "big firewall in the sky"
Now if the whole countries Internet access is coming down on pipe that passes via this "great firewall" then why not set up some kind of peer-to-peer network that attaches itself to the Internet in a different country.
Having paid no attention when I was at school to geography I don't know if any "friendly" countries are near SA, but this must be possible.
I am thinking along the lines of a scheme I heard about to provide broadband access to rural areas via a series of aerials and RF.
Over here in the good old UK (well maybe not good, just old) you are not going to get a good video card for 15 pounds. About 100 UKP is the *minimum* that you'd have to pay to get good performance. And some GF3Ti cards cost 400 UKP over here - I'd rather spend that money on something a bit more worthwhile!
Also, that things gonna be a big butt ugly case and look nothing like a console (OK maybe not what you want it for, but I wouldnt want a big beige case in my living room. They belong in the computer room - and the PS2 belongs under my TV)
Don't get me wrong, I ain't a fan of the XBox, mostly because its just ugly and I have a PS2 and will be getting a GC - do I need any more consoles.
If they make it faster then I'll make it my default desktop. KDE flies (on my old desktop) but Gnome is slow (looks nice) and Nautilus is a bitch.
What I want is something that resembles, but is more customisable then OS X.1 on the Mac. My brother owns a iBook and I really do like the new OS.
But when it comes the Linux on the desktop then I'll let my good ol' brother sum it up (he used to be quite anti Linux)
"OS X and Linux are leaving Windows in the shade, what are Microsoft doing wrong?" - his words. HE now runs OS X on his mac as the primary OS and Mandrake 8.1 on his x86 desktop.

Well back to work

Yeah, i can run @ 1260x980 with everything set to max - and then the game goes Holy Shit ... thats the funiest thing ever.
Oh, 1.9Ghz P4 1GB Memeory and a GF4 ti4600 128MB so screw benchmarks
Titania
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants
They changed the Gnome logo to a "Red Hat" as well...so what...change it back. Its Open Source.
I don't like the KDE logo...so my KDE box has a different logo...my choice!
So will it stop getting hit by lightning when watching my favorite flick?
Nevermind...

Just get NASA to launch the satellites - BOOM. Oh well there goes another billion dollar spy satellite!
Just one question:
If you are not technically orientated, why the hell are you reading slashdot? For the Human Interest stories?
Oh well, never mind.

Don't forget your tin foil hat. Stops the satellites
But you won't get a trial if the law passes...
Me, I'm just paranoid.
(By the way, I have protested against Capitalism, so I am a terrorist too)

Somebody mod this up as funny.
But seriously what's wrong with the CLI?
