  1. Another place to look... on Digitizing Your Dead Trees? · · Score: 2, Informative

is http://docs.rinet.ru:8080/ - I ran across this site a few years back. It almost looks like an online library for a Russian ISP's technical support staff.

They've got lots and lots of official books, all HTMLized a chapter or a section at a time. They're all a bit old or out of date, too - I know of one Perl book in particular that they have there was one edition behind what was being sold on the shelf at the time I saw it.

I'd like to know if this new input area can have specific apps placed in it, like on my Newt - I took out a few of their apps that I'd never used, and placed my dialup/telnet app and docking app in their place. I'd also like to see a picture of this new Clie, but the image on the site seems to be busted.

  8. Code Red annoying, at the least... on Viruses: More Hype than Danger? · · Score: 1

I'm building a web server where I work, and I've been having trouble with some of the code... I keep "tail -f error.log" active, and I see lots of code red hits on this server daily, mostly from overseas machines... and it's not even a publicly known server, it's just a dev box.

Being a Mac user at home, I haven't had to care about Code Red, but I find it's presence in the world, and it's attempts to access unknown, non-Win machines (especially ones that I'm working on) very disturbing. As I understand it, the hits I get are nothing compared to some servers, so I can only imagine the amount of bandwidth wasted on Code Red and it's kin.

Had more people actually heeded the legitimate virus warnings of the past, this problem might not exist. Hyping the pointless crap got us to this point, and I don't see what's going to fix it in the short term.

This movie is a spin-off of The (Brendan Frasier) Mummy movies, which were an astounding bit of escapism, broken plot lines, unreality, fantasy, and general making-stuff-up-as-you-go-along-ishness... and Rocky was in the Returns movie anyway. I don't recall either of those movies trying too hard to be classics of American cinema. So what's the problem with this one being more of the same?

Then again, it doesn't have to be done all at once. Scientists can start by just terraforming one chunk of Mars, and then build out from there. It would make sense to start near one of the poles, where there's a large concentration of ice; that would definitely make things easier at the start.

Some people will not change just for the sake of changing, especially if it's computer stuff they've gotten used to.
