I had the same exact experience. BestBuy, CompUSA, GameStop, EB Games, and Circuit City were all sold out. Target had about 30 in stock yesterday afternoon. I only checked there because I had given up and had to pick up a few things.
This is probably the overall dumbest post on the PSP yet.
Yes it is a marketing ploy to include a MS that can only realistically store game data. But it's Sony. They do that shit alllll the time. Put a CF slot in the Clie? Great idea! Allow users to use it for storage? Never! It DOES play MP3s right out of the box, and mounts as a drive under WindowsXP, so at least they moved away from proprietary software.
I have a PSP sitting right in front of me. I got my gf one. The head of our web site got one. We all rated it 9/10. Yes, it is that good.
First off, sure it's a little pricey. It's tageted at 20-30-somethings with some disposable income. I can get a portable DVD player for $150-200, then an MP3 player for $100, then a Gameboy DS/Advance for another $70-$150, plus a case big enough to hold all those, plus power cords and maybe a cigarette adapter. That comes out to around $400 for 5 times the bulk. Sure I can't play DVDs, but I rarely find myself wanting to watch movies unless it's a special occassion - in which case, no problem dropping $20 for a UMD. Throw in a 1GB MS Duo and even the price, and you still have an very sleak system next to a pile of bulky junk.
And seeing as that you haven't USED a PSP, 2.5 hours of battery is ridiculous! I played Spider-Man 2 for 2 hours, full brightness, full volume. When it was done the battery was at 60%. My gf played for 4.5 hours (games only, while waiting at work), and had 41% left. The battery lasts as long as claimed, and even more so.
As for games, I've played 4. Loved them all. There's more than the DS launched with...
And you whine about UMDs being proprietary... and the DS uses...???
And the captain seems to think that because it has 802.11b, you MUST bundle a browser. Why? It doesn't come with a keyboard, which makes entering URLs a pain. There is a browser in WipEout Pure, that someone has been able to use, so you know it can be done. When will people understand that media != web browsing? I'm sure it'll come. Jsut doesn't seem like something the unit NEEDS.
God, this guy didn't even get the price right. MIT boy, let's see. $270+$100 = $500? Not unless you're paying 30% sales tax. And it's $250, plus $40-50 for games. Came out to around $370 for me with 2 games.
Yes, it is version 1.0, but I think Sony hit the mark this time. I don't regret getting it for one second, and I have had zero problems with it. Overall the thing is jaw-droppingly gorgeous and sounds amazing. Go get one and prove yourself wrong. I hemmed and hawed over it at first, too. Then I picked it up and played with it for the first time, and I was sold.
OMG! You mean they showed a computer that was a square and had an optical drive!?!?! When will the rip offs END?!?!
Besides, the mini is just an mini/micro ATX rip off. Anyone remember this from Slashdot days of yore... http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/pocket-epc- lobby.asp
I think this I the first step toward truely usable multimonitor gaming. Most cards have a hard time reaching 1600x1200 with nearly full detail, and stretching the screen to cover 3200x1200 means a severe reduction in quality. On top of that it allows for 2 DVIs per card, for the average consumer, and 3+ for others.
Personally, I would love to see two vpus working in tandem to render 3 monitors. I just got 2 Dell 2001FPs, and FPSes can only use one (if for no ther reason that with two, you have your weapons and crosshair lingering in limbo-esque 'bevel land'). The only logical step up is to go to 3 monitors, but there's nothing game worthy with 4 DVI connections on 1 card.
Hey all. I consider the Slashdot crowd to be in the above average intelligence category (okay, most of you). The tone and presumption of the post is total crap.
I have dual undergrad science degrees, several years of research experience (including a project highlighted several times on/.), and graduated from a first tier school (yes, a little tooting of my horn). When the company I did research for started to go under, I was let go. I got a job a a pharmaceutical rep right away, and now play in the business world. I make almost triple what I did as a researcher, company car, flexible ours, hell, even free broadband. Guess what I'm doing right now? Taking a break from studying for the GRE so I can go back for a PhD and get the hell out of the business world.
I think it's healthy for people to realize on their own that money is really worthless, and that if you're creative, there'll always be ways to just make money. Just don't make it yo9ur life's pursuit. Let the MBAs have their money. Chances are, they need it to justify their worthless existence anyway. Seriously, where do you think the whole stereotype of the false smiling MBA comes from? Probably forgot how to make a real one.
Howdy! I do reviews for Design Technica and had a similar issue when setting up my htpc. I settled on two separate methods.
For most regular use, i have a Logitech DiNovo keyboard and mouse (I know, I read your post, not in the air mouse) and it ahs BY FAR the best range of any wireless option I tried (Logitech MX, Logitech regular, MS wireless, MS BT, Gyration, and a couple other no namers). On top of it, I don't need to put it away, sicne it practically looks like a work of art instead of a dorky keyboard. Also, the programmable keypad makes for a slightly bulky but funky remote.
For more HT based stuff, I use a Remote Wonder that came wiht my Radeon 9800 AIW Pro. Good range and all, but mousing with it is horribly impractical for anything more than a quick click every few minutes.
You can try the Gyration mouse, which I thought gave good distance (but the keyboards absolutely suck - bad enough that I returned it one week later and ate the restocking fee), but I found it semi awkward and completely useless for games.
I have this all setup about 12 ft from the TV. I was worried about interference (Wifi AP, cordless phones, 2 wireless console controllers, 2 wireless PC controllers in a multiunit building), but so far, everything is great.
I bought T2 the week it was released and has been my single favorite game of any system ever. Like others have echoed here, it isn't just a shoot and scoot, run around guns blazing fragfest. The first few times I played I really didn't like it, but stuck with it. After a week I was hooked.
The best part of the game is the strategic and coordinated SPONTANEOUS teamwork. You can tell you team that you have are going for the enemy flag, reinforce the defenses/offense, and command others to destroy certain items. For instance, you can call out "wait for my signal before attacking, I'll get the enemy flag". The command is acknowledged. Another player chimes in that they'll cover, and another that they'll attack the turrets. You give the signal and the team attacks at once. And the best part is that NONE of it was coordinated 30 seconds before the voice commands were given.
The servers have started to become more sparcely populated. Download the game and get online! Check out the War2003 mod, which lets you get mech armor and modified vehicles for more fun!
I owned one of these for about 2 days. It was 'okay' as a mouse. What ruined it was the horribly buggy software and the keyboard, which dropped every other character.
How odd this came up today. I JUST got my Samsung 61" DLP delivered today. It is amazing, judging by the few games I have played so far. I decided on the DLP because there's no burn in possability, huge size for low price, no ghosting (very important and very present on LCD projection TVs I have seen), and very thin. I went to every major electronics store (not Best Buy level. Only the snooty high class ones.), saw most sets side by side. You should do the same. Go to Tweeter and get then to change to something like soccer. Try to keep your eye on the ball. Sounds easy, eh? Only when the set has a decend refresh rate with little ghosting is it possible. Your eyes will begin to seccade like crazy and your brain will fil in information that is missing if you just watch passively. By watching a single object, you will notice how difficult active control over the screen will be with a game.
Anyway, I love it, and I'm sure you will too. Take the advice of ppl here and go check out avsforums. I did ALOT of research, and I am even more happy than I expected, now that I finally took the leap.
Wrong model. This is the CF-W2AW1AXP. You might be thinking of the CF-W2BW3AXP. In this case, the J model states 512MB max. It may be possible, but you can bet it will do something annoying like void the warrenty, etc.
(From the author of the review) *ugh* Quit the bitching. The point of DT's reviews is to give the consumer a general idea for how they will feel when they purchase the product. Sure, go to Panny's website. Hell, people may even buy it because it is a "Toughbook". What does that tell you about it? Pretty much next to nothing. You think Panny will say "Yeah, it's 'kinda' a Toughbook, but not really. Oh, and the screen isn't that great."
It's like saying "Oh, joy. Slashdot. Another site that basically rehashed two day old news and people post mundane comments on things they don't understand."
Don't count on it! I tried it. Turns out training was, and still is, broken. There's a 'bug' disallowing you to save your control setup, and oh, most people have trouble logging on.
They have the same policy of deleting posts. I've sworn off MMORPG until someone else goes a decent one.
I disagree. I have a similar situation, but most of my mp3s are encoded at 192+, which gives me around 40GB of music. Too much for the Ipods (which I was planning on getting when they got bigger drives - oh well).
I'd also like to encode some classical, just for when I'm on the road, and wouldn't use anything less than 320 (yes, flame mr for using lossy compression on 'gourmet' music).
Hehe, just about 4 years. I remember looking at the U1 at least a year and a half ago (maybe it was a preview). I've seen some old stuff here, but it's usually just rehash of some odd link that was 136 comments deep, and somehow everyone knew it was there.
"OMG! Everyone knows this! I was in that message Re:Re:Re:monsters eat monkeys was:where is my underwear (Re: A beowolf cluster of naked Natalie Portmans) - grits in my pants" With the link some random letter in the middle.
VNV is good until you have an event tied to every good song. Then it becomes nostalgia music. Ask any VNV fans who have listened to it for >1 year.
Also, VNV was one of the first bands in the industrial/ebm/etc genre to overtly forbid downloading songs and would whine about it at concerts. For that reason, I suggest you solely download their stuff.
Good job Dilbert. Haven't used it in a couple months have you? The latest version REQUIRES gator installation to even install. On top of that it over-writes yer winsocks, so even ad-aware cannot remove it. Go check the Lavasoft discussion boards.
Oh, and you HAVE to use the new version (609W). 608, the last of teh optional gatorware versions is no longer allowed to connect.

Yeah, the Remote Wonder 2 looks alot better.
(After reading my post, thank god someone else proof reads our stuff.)
Surprised that something from the early 80's works on Linux? Yes. I thought they only had drivers for 1970's hardware. ;)

Actually, CNN had a poll, I think it was on their website. They asked which gamers look at first. Price was 46%, games was 43%.
:P
Naturally, CNN read this as a "strong" indicatio that price is MORE important, even though the margin of error was +-3%
