  1. I had this problem on Vista Runs Out of Memory While Copying Files · · Score: 1

I had this problem and it was driving me nuts. It is not a Vista problem. It is a Kaspersky problem that Kaspersky doesn't want to deal with (all other AV products work 'fine'), so quit whining about how horrible Vista is. It apparently has something to do with the way KAV keeps files in memory to scan before allowing them to be written to disc.

The hotfix should be open to everyone, but oh well. It takes two seconds to submit the request and they got it to me in about 1 hour. Now I can tell when I hit the 16,4---whatever limit. There is a kind of balk to the copy process, and sometimes an error which requires clicking "Try Again" once or twice. IT happens only once in the copy process, even if you multiple of that magic 16,blahblahbah number.

This 'scientist' just wants to bias your views before you start reading the article.

    B) Anyone that claims to be a scientist and sites a friggin magazine is either a shitty scientist or not a scientist. Either way, they will not provide you with accurate info.

  7. From a researcher on Neural Interface for Gaming Getting Closer? · · Score: 3, Informative

I work in a lab, ding brain-computer interface experiments in monkeys and patients. I can say that the ability to ocntrol a video game with a non-invasive technique is a LONG way off. Right now we can get relatively decent 2D control using EEGs but there ae two basic problems. 1) All cheap (and most expensive) EEG caps cost serious money and require conductive compound between electrodes and the scalp. The procedure just to put on a basic 64 channel cap takes about 20-30 minutes. 2) The current techniques use modulations of oscillations of thousands of cells in the cortex that can vary for a million different reasons, and outside a strictly controlled demo, the applications are limited. In order to do this 'stress response' type command in a game, you would need additional electrodes to do things like measure skin conductance, because on its own, the EEG signals would be indistinguishable from one of the dimensions of movement. It is more likely that if you got stressed, you would turn left more, or some such oddity. The richness of data from non-invasive techniques does not afford itself to precise control. it is that simple. (I was approached about 3 years ago to work on a brain interface for a console to debute with a game version of Ender's Game. They said they wanted it under $100. I told them to come back in 15 years.)

The thing I hate most is the statement that evolution is just a 'theory'. So is gravity. It doesn't mean we fall up if we don't 'believe'.

A law is fact has been established in isolation from all possible confounding variables, and which the limits of are included in the definition. A theory is a law that for one reason or another cannot be tested and confirmed in isolation. Every body with mass exerts a gravitational pull on every other, and vice versa. Hence, you cannot isolate two particles and determine their gravitational interaction, because the rest of the universe interferes. You can get damn close, though.

Likewise, evolution is a theory simply because we cannot go back in time to observe and record the process as it happens. We can take note of changes that occur during our miniscule existence on this planet (recorded appropriately, of course), but we can never say 100% for sure that this is how we went from pond scum to, well, Kansas people excluded, intelligent beings, because we can't observe the process as it already happened.

BUT, I was a pharma rep for a couple years and I thought it would be a great statement to try and 'undo' some of the pollution I caused in that worthless job, driving around all day (approx 1000 miles/wk).

Then there is the geek factor. The car is geek. So deliciously geek. It can run completely quietly, which I refer to as "Ninja Mode" or "Stealth Mode". Everyone that has a Prius has a Ninja Mode story. Usually involving old ladies not paying attention in parking lots. Another nice thing is that I don't have to fill it up much. Actually, right now, I fill it up around once every 4 weeks.

And there's nothing more fun than pulling into a gas station, realizing that the guy next to you in the Hummer is about to hit $60 worth of gas, dropping only $2 on gas into the car, and driving off as it you've got a full tank. (of course, gas up down the road)

So, if you spend 2 onths writing up your NIH proposal and get it shot down because the margins are slightly off due to some minor bug in your freeware office app, it could mean your whole project. If DAPRA wants a Word document, Darpa gets a Word document, and even tiny itty bitty minor differences from what they expect can be the difference between $1MM and $0.
