The DevZone has a very large collection of free compilers, books, and SDKs available for download.
If you're leaning more towards game development, GameDev.net is an excellent resource. It's more a game development community but you can find help for anything programming related in the forums.
When the power supply fan goes bad I just switch it out with a new one (some are just regular sized case fans, others are smaller). Depending on how the original fan was wired in, it may require cutting and stripping a couple wires.
No, but technology doesn't just magically dissappear one day. I still have a 5 1/4 drive although all my 5 1/4 disks were converted to 3 1/2 years ago and now resides on CD-Rom and my web-site.
As long as you don't archive and forget it, there's no danger of not being able to read data that was first recorded 100 years ago. You just have to keep up with the transitions from one media to the next.
I've bought a couple motherboards, an AMD processor and a case from them and was very happy with the prices and had no problems with the parts.
My MB fried after a year but that was a problem with the case (which I bought at Fry's Electronics) design. The CD-Rom had to stick out a bit or it smashed into the MB. Bumped it one too many times and it shorted the MB. That's when I bought the new case and MB from Aberdeen. Both are great.
Fry's Electronics is okay but I shop with extreme caution.
Why do I need 4.5GB of disk space to play a game that runs off a disc in an HDless system?
If it can load in a decent amount of time on a PS2 I don't think it's worth 4.5GB to potentially load faster on a PC with a faster disc drive than the PS2.
"So, in this vein, the anti-abortion crusaders who think it's okay to kill abortion doctors are standing on logical ground. If they're right that "human life begins at conception, " then they can even claim to be standing firmly on moral ground."
That sounds all fine and dandy until you put "authority" into the equation. If I read a law book and find out it's a $100 fine for running red lights, that doesn't give me the AUTHORITY to go out and fine people $100 for running red lights.
I wrote ~20 pages on fundamentalism and that was pretty much the summary of it all.
As a Christian who understands this very simple verse
Romans 12:19, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." (which by the way is 'written' in the OT). Yes the law is in the Bible but NO YOU ARE NOT GIVEN THE AUTHORITY TO ENFORCE IT!
I find it disturbing and disgusting that people who claim to be Christian are so obviously acting against the will of their God.
I don't agree with abortion, I think it's wrong. But I also realize it's not my place to force my views onto people. I'd rather abortion were legal and people didn't do it because they didn't want to than force them to not do it. Smoking is legal and many people choose not to. Same with alchohol.
Stupid, stupid people advocating murder in the name of God or anything. Is the concept of "authority" really that difficult?
I run my server out of house for $70 which includes a dedicated 256K DSL line which gives me 60GB a month transfer max. $30 goes to my phone company and $40 to my ISP. I was running my server on a 200Mhz Pentium with Win2K and Apache and pulled off 1 million page views in a single month. I use a router to allow the rest of the computers share the connection with the server running on one.
www.dnsmadeeasy.com handles my domain name. I've since upgraded my PC but for just a hobby site, my original set up will work fine for you. I needed to upgrade simply for more disk space and because I'm not just running a web-site. I also do some indie game development and occassionally test my MMORPG servers on it.
If it's just a hobby site there's no need to spend a large amount of money. It took a year to get a 1 million page view month. I currently do around 800-900 unique IPs a day on my 256K line. Until you get to at least that level, there's no need to even consider putting down a large amount of money for your site. I've considered upping my bandwidth but at this point it isn't needed.
"They always ask how can life be created out of nothing."
They're just curious if scientists can do it out of nothing like they believe God did. The question isn't "how can life come out of nothing?" it's "how can life come out of nothing without the help of intelligence?"
And then they're even more curious as whether or not it can happen without science (intelligence) taking a part in it. This experiment doesn't prove that anything came from nothing anyway, since there was plenty of something that was used to create. It's a nice experiment but it doesn't prove anything you'd like to think it does.
I invested some lunch money in Red Hat because I thought they could make a very nice chunk of change. That was almost a year ago. Their stocks steadily went down as has been the trend looking at their entire stock history.
Since I didn't need the money I held on to them. It wasn't until IBM stepped in that their stocks have regained ground.
Judging from their history and recent events the only way this company is going to make significant returns to it's shareholders is if a major player steps in.
AOL has a very large market to work with so I think this could be a very good thing. Yes it's AOL but Linux is GPL so if AOL does good things with Linux perhaps some other big names will step up and do even more.
"Rolltronics talks about this as a technology for fabbing memory"
No they don't.
From the article:
"That's 50 times fatter than the finest features produced using conventional photolithography. But that's okay, since these electronics are not, designed for devices that require high density, like memory chips or microprocessors."
I don't know why anymore but I've known this for years. There's a ancient myth of the three(?) sisters who cut the strings of life. When the string is gone the person dies.
On cells it's the same way. They are these things on cells that as they get shorter the cell begins to die. When they are gone, the cells die.
Cancer cells don't lose their "string."
So it makes sense that forcing cells to not lose their "string" causes cancer as that's exactly what cancer cells are.
This isn't new science. It's just a conclusion based on various facts that have been available for years.
Seems kind of wrong to rely on MS to make your web-site to bash MS.

It's not that it's acceptable, just inevitable. The so called "innocent" know we're comming. If they don't leave before we arrive it's their own fault if they're killed. I can feel sorry for refugees who are in the middle of getting away but people sitting on their porch in the middle of a war zone...I don't think so.
If the government is too stubborn at the expense of their people then that is also not our concern.
The internet allows anyone to read any book. I could read Plato and Aristotle and quote them to boost my image. But I'd hardly be smart. You have to know how to apply that knowledge and explain it in your own words before you could possibly be considered educated in their works. Being able to quote Plato doesn't make you qualified to replace him.
Trying to give students an edge by handing them a cheap laptop won't help them to apply knowledge in the real world to be truly educated. Giving them access to cheat sheets on the net isn't helping to motivate them to even study. And why should they? They already have all the answers? All they have to do is look up the answers, memorize them and regurgatate them on the tests. And we'll be so proud because we think they actually learned something.
I had teachers who would get annoyed when students would click pens. I wonder if these laptops have quiet keys.
I think it's important to be computer literate but I think at that age alot of time is going to be spent keeping them from playing games during class.
We also have this growing obsession with the internet. Students would be better off reading books, granted some are only available on the net. I hang around Gamedev.net alot and see too often "where can I get a tutorial?" for everything. Sometimes you have to figure things out on your own. You can't learn how to do that if you're constantly hitting Google for the walkthru for the current homework assignment.
In the long run that won't help. Technology changes constantly. I know how to program and build computers because I learned how to experiment and figure things out on my own. As soon as my HP fried I ripped it apart and have built all the computers I have (4 in my room) just by looking at how the HP was assembled years ago. If those students with laptops don't learn how to learn, they'll never move past that laptop.
Tech is nice but school doesn't need it. There's alot to learn in life and technology isn't a significant part of it.
Do you have anything new to say or would you just like to keep repeating me?
C-14 decaying = law
rate at which C-14 decays = theory
Is that clear or no? I can say it again for you if you'd like.
At which point Christ comes again (if you believe that sort of thing) it will happen that time itself will cease to be.
Please note that above paragraph is designed to provide a large circular target for you to use to attack my argument by way of ad hominem. I'd make it red for you if I knew how.
Theory is generally based on underlying facts. C-14 decaying is a fact. C-14 decaying at any given rate over time is a theory and from the article it's even less accurate than previously thought.
The sun rising is only theory if you believe the laws of physics could collapse at any time.
