Also, this is what they *could* be losing if they lost MSRP. Luckily you only lose cost when someone steals. It would be a lot easier to feel bad for these companies if they would level with consumers.
ZDnet, MSNBC and porn star Danni Ashe (how can you argue with her?), all disagree completely with that article. I think that the ZDnet article makes more sense because when all the companies are failing, I'm sure the first thing (I *hope* the first thing) dot com employees get rid of is porn fees.
You wouldn't believe how lame it would be for a real site like amazon.com to start acting like some "warez" site.. "cliX0r 4ll |\|\y b4nn3rs 0r 1 w1ll h4\/e t0 take th3 pr0n secti0n down! 4nd 1 d0n't hav3 a j0b to pay for hosting, h4w!!!11"
I think we should just change the format to *.hah or something. I think it would be a few years before the RIAA figured out that they were still mp3's. Cmon, it's such a buzzword (extention)! Also, how do they get access to this? Do they go on your win98 box and do a file find for *.mp3? Or on linux how do they login? I guess they could just take it apart and look at the bits or something, but all that work to find some college student that traded some mp3s, ew. The mp3 collection isn't worth what it takes to take apart a HD.
"By encouraging people to anonymously rate complete strangers they have never seen before and will (likely) never see again"
No, they are not rating a stranger. They are rating the looks of a stranger. There is a huge difference. I pride myself on the fact that I don't judge people by their looks. But I will still say "That woman is hot", "I'd like to get some of that". Why? Because it's true. My body tells me that one woman is beautiful and the other one is unhealthy and obese. If you read the ESR's guide to sex, even though is was an april fools joke, had a valid point that it is all human instinct because men want someone that looks healthy enough to have a child.
Linux is good but I think stuff like "devices that tell our antilock brakes when to unlock" will go to private firms or pre packaged stuff that's made specifically for it like LynxOS. It has been argued that linux is not made for the desktop, more servers. And while that can be debated I think this one is a little bit harder battle.
I'm sure they would, but then the people in Texas might have a picture of Gore with an axe through his head and Bush with a halo over his head. Then he Bush would argue that the zit on his face cost him the election or something. Pictures are just too abstract to decide black and white if it's okay or not. Nice thought though =)
The next technology step towards improving voting does not have to be databases or internet voting. In fact it will never be internet voting because (even though I cant see this happening) they don't know someone is holding a gun to your head to vote Bush. Even more possible is a sign or two or a commercial on TV for president because that too is illegal. Databases, while a better idea, are too hard to get the US convinced to go along with it since they are all paranoid about hacking. Which is slightly true since some guy can go "update voting set canidate='Gore';". The easiest, best, quickest way to get technology in the door is to have like a touch screen computer that you just touch the person you want to vote for. When you're done it doesn't send it to a database or anything. Instead, it just punches out your card for you. Hell, give the option of deciding whether they want to do it on the computer or not, since after all, there would be no way to tell the difference between the two except one is nice and clean and done right. While the other may have to worry about chads or something. Which would also give a more legit reason to just toss them out.
I hope these new people loosen up. Right now to get a.edu domain name you need to be a like 4 year college or something. Our K-12 school district *doesn't* count. So we have to get a special organization to give us a virtual host that we have to run the whole district off of. Instead of each school having a sub domain. But I still hope they dont go too far to where people can get "crack_is_good_for_you.edu".
On this paragraph, talking about choices and compatability (ex, KDE and Gnome):
On one thing Doug Miller and I agree: serving your customers is how you build great companies. I just don't see how locking your customers into inflexible binary-only proprietary technologies over which they have no control can be defined as serving them. I guess we still have some work to do getting the word out that there is a more robust, reliable and economic way to use technology, it's called open source.
He kinda missed the point. It's obvious that choices are good. You got vanilla, you got strawberry. But the point the MS guy was trying to make was that it's not cost effective, from the MS view. And not worth it to develop the same thing twice for KDE and Gnome. Do you guys think that it's worth it?
This guy obviously lives in the US =) The *US* says that the plane was in international airspace and on autopilot and got hit by a fighter and all that fun stuff. The Chinese aren't saying "It's our fault! Now apologize!" They say the US is full of it. Who do you believe? It's hard to tell when it happened across the world with only 24 some odd witnesses.
The US is the closest thing to a true democracy we have. At the very least you can vote for the guy who doesn't want fast planes or vote for the guy who does. But the cost is negligible. So whether or not the canidate is for or against isn't really something that comes up (or matters).
And if we were supposed to drive we would have tires on our ass. And if we were supposed to smoke we'd have filters down our throats. If God DIDN'T want us to fly fast he wouldn't have given us our handy dandy thumb and the brains to do it! And we live in a democracy, if you didn't want fast planes then vote against it.
I hope it doesn't turn out like the Super Bowl and some of these events that sell *everything*.. "Hello, and welcome to the Tostito's half time report. Wow, did you see that e-trade half time show presented by MTV? Uh huh, Tampax was there.."
If you were really worried that microsoft was stealing your code you could sue them. "But they could appeal it for years" you might say, but it's a lot harder with this case. Lets say you make your own site, "Pirate-Windows-Mail", same ToS and submit Windows and copy/distribute it. MS of course sues you. You get in court and let MS tear you appart (and they win), suddenly there is a precident set that says that the ToS used like that breaks the law. So the court would turn around and shut down MS. I dont think there is anything to worry about..
If it works like Neo Trace (shows a map of server locations), it pretty much just does a whois on your domain and says "hey, this is in france". So of course it could be easily faked. Do they have a better way?
You're right that no one is going to get more bandwidth out of their faster CPU. But imagine doing ungodly amounts of compression on multimedia and other data and being able to instantly (via fast procesor) decompress it on the other end. Like a gzip html file which can bring a 120KB file down to 14KB, and just takes a little bit more time to render. But if you have a 14.4 modem and a 750mhz computer, it's more than worth it.
I wish it was that simple. Error handling is needed. These people dont even know how to put in their username and password, always trying to put caps or their real name. And they wouldn't know the half of running X or how to get into their browser (or know what a browser is). Then setting up mail can be a pain, too. It may sound like a joke, but it happens every day. And by the way, is it a right click or a left click, once or twice?:)
I disagree that everyone is using MS products because there isn't something else. Have you ever tried to setup a 50 year old dial up customer who has never touched a computer in his life? I wouldn't bother if they didn't use Windows. I have to tell them whether to do one click or two, right click or left click. Can you imagine them trying to walk them through a pnpdump and setup eth0? (actually I have no idea how to setup dial up on linux, so Im comparing with LAN) And what if they are running Joe-Schmoe distrobution, do they use debian like packages or RPM? Because of the microsoft ease of use and huge market I can remember the setup on 4 versions as compared with this type of linux satire
Also, this is what they *could* be losing if they lost MSRP. Luckily you only lose cost when someone steals. It would be a lot easier to feel bad for these companies if they would level with consumers.

amiallyourbaseornot.com =)
Why would I see intel getting ahead? Because money talks, and well, look at AMD, then look at Intel.. Wait a sec.. I'll shut up now..

Yeah, nice try =) It's way easier to submit an internet type ballot than a mailed absentee ballot. I mean, compare an email to a real a letter.

If you don't like people complaining on slashdot all the time, as I learned, don't visit. It's /.'s site and they can remove posts if they want to.

I just deleted my life diary for Quake, well worth it.

Too in-depth for script kiddies, thus requiring script kiddies? I dont get it.
