  1. Apple competes with Wintel/Lintel on Confessions of a Mac OS X User · · Score: 1

Apple has a monopoly on "macs" not on home computers.. MS controls probably about 90% of the pc computer market.

  2. Er OS X is based on open source on Confessions of a Mac OS X User · · Score: 5, Informative

Apple as a company is not an angel. But its not a monoply and is leverging open source an contributing back to the open source community. As a rule Apple shuns DRM (digital rights management).

But OS-X has at its core DARWIN which is an open source version of BSD which apple puts out. The parts of the OS that isn't opensource is the graphics layer above OS and a few other bits (hfs+ the file system is not open either I think.).

They've given back web browser code, updates to GCC etc. etc.. So all told they're not bad guys.

Also some of the expensive audio programs do midi to sheet music. logic pro does it (see the sidebar on the right..) and I'm sure there is more.

I'm not saying your ISP should be giving out your info to anyone, but now you name is in public record as a defendent in a lawsuit. Probably won't get off the hook as easy as the first batch of defendents either.

We have a 4 megapixel camera. A minolta s404. We can make 4x6 and 5x7 which are quite sharp a detailed and colorfull. We've also made some 8x10s and that really pushing it with 4 or 5 megapiexels, and you can't crop much.

I sugest investing in a photo printer. They're cheap (except the ink) and the output is good. (I have an epson 1270).

I'm not a super digital fan boy, in fact 90% of what I do is film. But digital cameras can be fun fun and has its place.

A good rule of thumb is you want at least 200 dpi for you prints (300 is ideal) Note this has nothing to do with printer resolution. so a 4 megapixel image 2270 X 1700 at 300 dpi is 7 inches by almost 6. At 200 dpi 11 inch by 8.5.

Predictable Open-Source Advocates Decry Microsoft Anti-Linux Ads
Microsoft's recent ad campaign that pits Linux against Windows has engendered an unintentionally hilarious but predictable reaction from the open-source community, with various Linux advocates crying foul over what they call Microsoft's misleading analysis. The biggest problem seems to be that Microsoft commissioned some of the reports the ads cite, but the company has been upfront about that situation and claims that such funding is a common industry practice. Watching the open-source guys fall all over each other trying to be the first to disprove the Microsoft claims about Linux is what I find really funny. We get it, guys; you don't like Microsoft.

There is a fine line between raw performance and the time required to code. If I'm first to market with a slower product I'm at an advantage. If it cost you 10X as much to code your much optimized solution I'm still at an advantage provided hardware is fairly inexpensive compared to programmer time.

Perl programs write really fast code because they tend to use hashes more than c/C++ programmer. Perl isn't compilied.

I tried searching for reveiws of some products this holiday season. I have a method of keywords I used to get me past the ads. This used to work great. The google slammers (or whatever they're called now) are getting much much better as a lot of what looked to be reviews were just sites selling. Uggg. Often I would have to go to page 2 and 3 to pick up real review. I ended up using sites recomended by a friend and searched there postings.

I've started looking for/using other engines already. Sometimes when you get too big everyone tries to trick the service into selling.

Like open source preaches options are really important to keep things going.

examples of band selling CDs without the RIAA. Whats cool is that you can listen to free samples/tracks to see if you like before buying. Steve was right, the internet was made to distribute music!
