As someone who switches between machines frequently at work, I always have trouble with SUN keyboards which insist on switching the caps-lock and control keys. I always hit "control" (caps lock on sun) AND THE REALIZED CAPS LOCK IS IN A DIFFERENT PLACE SO TYPE THE REAL CONTROL KEY THEN AFTER TYPING relize I hit the caps lock key.
Switching these keys would increase Suns market share 10%.
There is a new threat on the horizon. "slashdoters" are masses of technically adept, socially inept people from around the globe. The slashdoters seem well read on constitutional issues although seem to deride copyright and patent laws. Its seems they've turned to islam, and are reading the new iranian presidents blogs. No good can come of this..
That or they're trying to take it down the blog through their "slashdot" effect (en mass loading of a web site).
We can't if they're for us or against us. They all should be monitored but we'll need a big budget increase do to there numbers.
I want a mid range mac to replace my g4 dual tower. I don't want a huge tower and I want more than the mac mini. The trouble is.. there is nothing in the 1000$-1200 range without a screen.
Come-on apple. There is a middle ground between "pro" and "home"
Seriously, its one way companies can reward employees and employees can make it big. Because accounting rules are tricky companies can give employees stock for cheap without it effecting the balance sheet. If you look at what CEO's are pulling down, stock options appease employee grumbling.
The market model for the xbox360 is to loose money selling the console, make it back selling games. MS gets a cut from each game.
Well so far with MS loses in the billions over gameing they have a lot of games to sell.
It might make the 360 more popular, however people buying the system because you can buy pirated games probably will then buy pirated games. Its unlikely they'll switch to the more expensive legit games.
When SGI started selling intel based workstations, it was pretty much over. The expensive add on video card did little to add value compared to the hp/dells of the world.
We have some SGI (Irix) based software here we ported fairly easily to solaris.
Gamasutra has been around for a long time and reports on game industry things. They also have some excellent articles on the making of games and game algorithms (physics engines, collision detection etc..)
I have a photo site. I notice a lot of hits from xanga and myspace for some of my photos. Kids are using them as backgrounds.. I don't really care and have the bandwidth. Someone at work noted that if I was really annoyed I could change those users background to "another" picture.....
Anytime you cross post to content on another server you run the risk of a "switch" at anytime.
We where and HPUX and SOlaris shop. Now we're a IBM/ SOLARIS shop. HP's desision to kill PA-RISC and replace it with itanium on there large "superdome" class machines. And we have orders for lots more of these expensive (high profit margine) machines in the future. This is going to cost HP millions on going and we're just one shop.
Sony's consoles tend to have long lifespans. Its only recently they stopped selling ps1s. The PS2 lasted many years and due to "interesting" achitecture games shipped now appear better than those released early. The lifespan of the ps2 was 2 years longer than xbox and 1 year longer than gamecube (before replacement with newer model.) Sony will probably contine selling ps2s for another couple years. Xbox 1 is a dead end, because most of the games aren't really backward compatible with the 360, and many that are, are only sort of compatible.
People moan about the new consoles price but actually the new console sales will probably follow hd tv adoption. When I get an HD tv, I will probably update my consolw within the Sony being more tempting since I already have a number of games I life for it.
Itunes makes it obscenely easy to "remove" drm. When you have itunes files, just burn them to a cd. This can serve 2 purposes:
1: Backup . Mom always said backup frequently and often. 2: DRM free version. This version is DRM free. You can rerip. I've tried it reripping as mp3 (256). I couldn't notice any noticable decrease in quality. If you can you probably shouldn't be buying 128 kbps aac's in the first place..
It is very likely that the very expensive blu-ray drive will drop in price rapidly as production ramps up. This should allow Sony to drop the price of the console.
It depends how may developers use the cell processor to its fullest extent and how creative/fun the games are.

Think of all the free vacations this family is being offered to get them "out of the house" so to speak.

Linspire is trying real hard at a consumer linux. Everytime its mentioned here it gets hammered as not being professional enought etc..etc..
Microcenter sells cheap PCs with linspire pre installed. A friend bought one and is pretty happy with it.

Who moded this "insitefull"..
Funny, maybe..
100 games in the pipe...No wonder my email is so slow...
Oh wait.. tubes, not pipes.
Never mind.
If the vm is fast enough, it could enable the blu-ray killer app. Be-jewled on dvd (I hate that game.... but it still is very popular).

The more people use macs the less we'll see fewer and fewer "internet explorer" only web sites. This has been a good trend.
With firefox and the fact that most people use the web alot for everything, it makes a transition from windows to linux on the desktop easier.
We used to use superdomes (pa-risc). Now I understand the switch to IBM POWER machines on new projects..
Now that intel is finally throwing research and marketing on 64 bit x86 to compete with AMD, is its intel's other 64 bit chip itanium officially dead?

I've studied up on computer history. Its amazing how many people were involved in making computers and the computer science field what it is today.
Good post from slashdot. Interesting stuff.

If your bothering to download and watch every episode...
Isn't that by definition a hard core fan?
A casual fan wouldn't bother to go through all that trouble.
