August 2nd Release For Street Fighter II
Gamasutra reports that Microsoft has announced Xbox Live Wednesdays, a soon-to-be weekly release of content to Xbox Live. They have a listing of the next few weeks worth of content, and happily Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting is slated for August 2nd. Frogger will be coming out tomorrow, July 12th, with Cloning Clyde due next week, Galaga the week after that, and Pac-Man expected on August 9th. From the article: "Xbox Live Arcade's Frogger has been enhanced for the Xbox 360, and features new, enhanced artwork that matches and complements the original style. In addition, according to Microsoft, the game's audio, including sound effects and music, has been modernized to sound crisp and clear on today's high performance sound systems." While these releases have mostly been seen as filler for the 360's very uneventful summer schedule, I can't complain too much about the chance to play Street Fighter II again. I'll be playing Chun Li; Who is your character?
So I can sell this game after I'm done with it, just like I did with Street Fighter II for SNES, right?
Oh. I see. DRM. No.
This is why I'm only buying Nintendo.
1991 called. They want their game back.
That's just a down-right decent thing to do for those of us that enjoy some of the older games.
I really thought this was a joke so I laughed reading it. Wait, they are serious. What???
If Microsoft announced it, why do we need Gamasutra reporting it? Does the /. community only want to hear of things through blogs these days?
Checkmate.
Haiku for you!
Anyways, this is nice and all, but why not bring some RPG's into this? Frogger and Galaga get really old, really fast.... at least Street Fighter will keep me occupied for a bit...

Now I'll have to learn all the moves all over again. Well, that should take up my entire weekend.
I'd be playing Ryu of course, he can own anyone in the game.

I understand your complaints about the 360 (although everyone I know that has one is happy with it), and I agree that the Wii is pretty much promised to sell, but what makes you so sure about the PS3 before release? It could have just as many defects as the 360, and the price tag is high enough to ensure that most of the non-working kids (the ones that rely on their parents to buy stuff) won't be able to get it-- I mean, as a parent, how do you justify spending $600 on a console when another (of the same generation) costs $400 (which you thought was high enough to begin with)?

The idea is arcade games here. I don't know of any arcade RPGs, they just aren't really compatible formats. The closest thign would probably be the D&D hack n' slash games on the CPS-2, but those are little more than Final Fight with swords and people that level up.
HADOUKEN!
You've been able to get SF2 (in some of its many verieties) on pretty much any system. This doesn't seem like a big deal.
Nostalgia aside, SF2 really introduced one of the most balanced (character-wise)games to date, and became the touchstone against which other PvP fighting games had to measure up. Having the analog stick controls will also simply things greatly. I've been waiting for the release of SF2:HF on Live for quite a while; Geometry Wars, while quite entertaining, doesn't give you any PvP goodness. It will also be nice to have the HD graphical update for those with larger screens.
I was just dumb and didn't realize they were scripted -- thought it was a random "bonus" for pressing alot of buttons.
So I'd either back off and mash the controller hoping for a "dookan" or that spinning kick, or get in close and try to pull off an uppercut.
I've always thought it was strange to compare sales numbers for the 360 with other "X months in" numbers for other consoles - but consider this: the Xbox 360 hasn't been through a real Christmas season yet. It was intended to rack up some real numbers (and would've too), but MS suffered from terrible execution and couldn't deliver on the demand. The sales numbers right now mean nothing, it is not the hot console season right now anyway. If the 360 flops *this* coming Christmas season, then there may be some genuine concern for the console's future.
I can give you some credit for the 'nothing worth playing' bit, though it stands to be seen whether or not any of the PS3's powerhouse franchises will be available at-launch. Once Halo 3 rolls out we will see a huge surge in 360 demand (deservedly or not, I wasn't a huge fan of the second game).
As for defect rate, Sony isn't much better off. The Xbox towards the end of its life was pretty rock solid, while I was still hearing about dead DVD drives left right and center with the PS2. This isn't to say the PS3 will be a piece of junk, but one should remember that Sony doesn't exactly have a golden track record either.
And can we stop it with the "$200 for multiplayer" argument already? We don't know if the PS3's online service will be for-pay also, and hell, even if it were, can it offer the excellent experience that Xbox Live gives? I'd pay good money ($5/month isn't much) to have the type of matchmaking abilities Live offers. If Sony can offer that for free, great, they win, but we don't know anything about that, so let's dispense with the Sony fanboy fellatio?
So far, just in casual discussions with friends and colleagues, there is more interest overall for the 360 than the PS3, though in general people are pretty blah about the next-gen thing in general. The only people I know that are still committed to buying the PS3 are the hopeless fanboys and Japanophiles.
...for 10 bucks at Toys R Us? Then you get to keep it, take it to your friend's house and not have to worry if your DRM'ed file will be deleted after your "Rights" have expired. Remember, they update the Live firmware, so what works today may not work tomorrow. ::Cough WGA Cough::
One Token Ring to Rule them All, One Search Engine to Find Them, One WAN to bring them in, and TCP/IP Bind them...
As someone who drank the 360 kool-aid (and more importantly, the live arcade kool-aid) I've been increasingly annoyed with the complete lack of new content. Last thing we got was Uno, around E3; there was a drought before then and a drought since then with all these games promised, but not delivered, delayed time and time again. (SF2 was supposed to hit around March, originally.)
One thing the 360 regulars have been asking for are real, solid release dates. After the debacle with the Prey demo being delayed with no word from HQ because as MajorNelson noted, "release dates are bad," since slips mean trouble... I'm surprised we're getting actual numbers. One a week is great pacing, too; you can plan which ones you want and when you can expect to pick them up. Assuming they stick to the schedule.
Hats off to MS here. They've fumbled around a lot, but now they've got a good plan in place and are communicating clearly. And about time.
Now, if we could only get some retail releases that aren't shootdrivballing games with 2stick+2trigger control schemes...
Normally Microsoft's sock puppets are a little more subtle than that - is Street Fighter II embarassing you here?
Joking apart, it's quite understandable that the XBox 360 is taking quite a while to gather momentum (as will PS3). The sheer effort required to produce titles for this generation makes it inevitable.
Personally I find XBox Live Arcade very encouraging in terms of what it suggests about the future of gaming. For me there are no killer apps yet in this generation, but I wouldn't be surprised if the first one to turn up is a Live download (or Sony's equivalent).
Gamasutra has been around for a long time and reports on game industry things. They also have some excellent articles on the making of games and game algorithms (physics engines, collision detection etc..)
Check it out.
15 years from now, the 101st release of "Street Fighter 4 XZY: Ultra Hyper Super Fighting" for the XBOX 1080, complete with lag-free online play, and the ability to gouge your opponents eyes out, which I'm sure will come in handy when I decide to kill myself when Capcom announce another port/remake.
exclusive footage
Great balls of fire indeed. Hadouken!
I've played Street Fighter II in the arcades, on the SNES and Genesis (in all their versions), on the TG-16 via a ROM, Street Fighter Collection on the PS1, and both Street Fighter Anniversary Collection and Capcom Classics Collection for the Xbox. I know I am missing one or two systems but I have gotten enough Street Fighter II to last a lifetime.
I dunno why people are paying AGAIN for this and probably around $10 or more. You can get Hyper Fighting and all of its variants plus like 17 other games with the Capcom Classics for around $20 or less. Why waste it on Xbox Live Arcade? You are a tool if you are buying this again.
Oh man, because xbox live games are all DRM'd, I can't copy them to my other compatible platform based on the custom xbox 360 hardware... err... never mind :-(
I'm just curious, but if these titles WEREN'T DRM'd, which platform pray tell would you play them on? Lasy checked most of these titles coming out (Frogger, PacMan, SFII) have been available on the PC via emulation or PC versions for -years-, most being had for free.
So for those complaining about the DRM, just get a free version on another platform. And to the others who are complaining that XBox Live Arcade has been really lack luster lately with the games being released, perhaps you should ask the actual development studios?
If it was online multiplayer, I might give a shit.
Otherwise, it's hardly "the chance to play Street Fighter II again". I can do that for free already. Will these chumps ever catch on and starting providing some added value such as net play?
They just pulled the release. Apparently they weren't supposed to have released it yet. Anyone have a cache of the release?
1981 called. They want their game back.
Blanka of course. Ahh the memories.
I'll never forget the 8 second win on a match I did on a guy playing Ryu. All I could think is what a pain. I was playing by myself and he didn't bother to ask first before joining in. You know be at least curtious which most were especially the good ones. Ryu always seemed to not take certain hits from Blanka well.
I beat one kid once in under 20 seconds one day and he called it a microwave butt whooping. I thought it was funny... He did use butt either but I'm being nice...
...those Kirstie Alley Jenny commercials finally made E. Honda take action.
You can hold down the "B" button for continuous firing.
Totally agreed on the XBLA point, which is why I was very disappointed to hear that the 360 HDD would only be 20GB. C'mon, for an accessory you charge >$100 for, you can't do better than a measly 20GB? As it is, you cram a few demos, some music, some videos, etc, onto your Xbox and the damned thing's full already. 20GB is woefully inadequate on a system where Microsoft encourages you to go nuts on the downloading. It also denies the possibility to distributing full games via downloads (as opposed to the 25-50MB XBLA limit). I for one was looking forward to distributing 300MB games via Xbox Live, but with HDD space the way it is...
I hear a lot of people talk about how game dev for HD is sooooo much more expensive, but game companies have been making PC games for decades now with way more than 1080 lines of vertical resolution, and strangely enough PC games do not cost more than 480i GameCube products.
What's the problem? Don't you just plot vectors and let the GPU do all the work?
Could it be that game companies are simply falling back on this as an excuse to sell half-baked products (like Madden 06) to a niche market (360 owners now, PS3 owners tomorrow) who are starving for good high-res content?

How do you justify it? Well, if you are like my idiotic ex-best friend and his wife, you let your kids run your life to the point that you live in poverty so that you can give your kids whatever trinket they whine their fool heads off over this week. You justify it by wanting to be the kids "best friend" so much that you forgo everything else (discipline, etc). You end up in this situation by "bribing" your kids to do whatever you are wanting, instead of TELLING them to do whatever. After you bribe your kids, they whine/cry/scream/yell so much that, instead of sending them to their room, spanking, "time out", or whatever other discipline, you cave in and give them what you bribed them with anyway.
No, I'm not bitter. I do feel really sorry for those kids. However, this will happen all across the US, and very likely other parts of the world. No, this type of situation alone will not keep the PS3 sales up, but I'd bet it'd be a larger part of the sales than anyone here would think...
bork bork bork!
ok,
I understand you can go to the local dollar store and pick up an SNES version of street fighter, or pretty much for any system. I know this is where people are getting confused, "why would I pay for this shit when I can dust off my old trust SNES and play for hours!" Well this is the reason why
YOU PLAY ONLINE WITH PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD!
that's right! instead of having a select few friends that actually know how to play this game or even care to play you can now play . . . online!
that's all I have to say, online play is a great selling point now a days.. I sure as hell will be buying this when it's released on the 2nd..
MrJynxx
I'd use Ken. I'll Triple Fierce your ass. And then I'll do it again. Then throw you to Perfect your head-stomping, kick-tapping Chun Li into the ground.

They probably need to defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.
If anyone remembers it, the Arcade game based on the movie based on the arcade game, Seems like it would go over better with the next gen crowd more then 2D sprites would.
Why not just buy the Street Fighter Collection for 10 bucks at Toys R Us?
Because the XBox 360's "partial" backward compatibility feature doesn't support it.
Gotcha!
No suprise that a tool like Zonk owns an Xbox 360 I guess.
Also, not a suprise that he plays as the scrubbiest character in the game.
These lies don't even deserve +1 karma. Fuck this is why Slashdot Games section sucks so much. All the dumbass Nintendo fanboys.
Good point about the state of modern parenting, though I'm not 100% sure it's that bad across the whole nation.
So, what can prevent PS3s from getting into the hands of whiny kids? Hardware shortages.
[PowerPoint] is a tool for capitalist presentation
you forgot about the Wii with the supposed price of no more then $250.
If you see a PS3 for $599 an Xbox 360 for $399 and a Wii for $249 there won't be much of a decision maker for your average person to see that the Wii would be the best for the price.
Well, I didn't factor the Wii price into that so much because, even to people who don't understand games, the Wii is not the same TYPE of gaming machine as the other two. The PS3 and 360 are directly competing with each other, and they're much more similiar.

I own a 360, inadvertently the shitty core unit. However, I don't really feel very bad about that anymore because who cares whether I have a HD on a system I never use. While I do commend MS for the effort to bring us something good on their super-system, I still have a super nintendo and a playstation sitting next to my HDTV. I own street fighter and think that I have probably put as much time into that game as I need to... 15 years ago.
It really seems that the very high end hardware has really stunted the kind of games we are getting. To make a game that uses the xBox360 requires a great amount of capital, manufacturers are afraid to dive into a new console with a new idea. So instead of getting a bunch of games for the console that are breaking some ground, we get frogger... I wrote frogger in ARM assembly language for a project in school. Playing frogger on your xBox360 is ok if it is between actual cool games. If it is the only thing you use it for, you probably should have bought an awsome stereo sound system to play your SNES on.
Grab an emulator and a game pad and you can play every game ever made for pretty much every obsolete gaming system.
I love gaming, however, I am not impressed.
You take it, I don't want it...
Exactly what I already had with Capcom vs. SNK 2 on the XBox and the Streetfighter Anniversary collection, but on the 360 instead of the Xbox.
The Xbox 360 sure gets all the great stuff, just like the Sony PSP!

Internet Explorer (n): Another bug -- that is, a feature that can't be turned off -- in Windows.
The same trend occurs for PC games. In the early 1990s, developers would write their own engines. Now, specialized houses write the engines, and out source it. Most developers retain a staff of developers that's just specialized enough to customize the engine and put the game content into it.
Most development houses now have a much larger staff of content generators as well. In Doom, you had sprites. In Quake, you had incredibly low-polygon models (remember the Quake 1 guy's jarhead?). Oblivion, comparatively, uses as many polygons on a small object in a complex scene as Quake 1 used on half of a scene. PC developers have been conglomerating left, right, and centre, with far fewer houses producing the higher-content titles, and most of the smaller publishers sticking to simpler games that emphasize gameplay over graphics. In this arena, they can succeed.
So, I guess, it's not true what you stated; you can't just plot vectors and let the GPU do the work, because you have to develop a model with 30,000-60,000 polygons, maybe render that into a bump-mapping + simplified model, and then add on top the actual item textures; these same textures must be rendered at a high quality, so they can be included in dithered down versions for LOD and general management of GPU RAM. Those polygon numbers only go up with each generation of PC and console games, which requires more time to model (until rendering software gets better, and can magically generate content for you).
--
Internet Explorer (n): Another bug -- that is, a feature that can't be turned off -- in Windows.
Not really. In the old days of Q1 and Q2, we could easily render 1280x1024 pixels of blurry textures, low polygon counts, and all sorts of graphics shite (which looked good for their day). This isn't about how many lines you're putting to screen, but rather that these extra lines are exposing inadequacies in your graphics that today's hyper-realism players expect.
That's a gross oversimplification, but I think the idea stands. Where in the HL1 days we could reasonably model a 900-polygon character and texture him in a matter of a week, nowadays with normal mapping, specular mapping, opacity mapping, insane diffuse mapping, developing both a low-polycount and a high-res model... and all that other graphics jazz, it becomes much more labour-intensive to do the same thing (albeit it looks a lot better).
Game dev costs are turning into a game about content development. Code cost is now a much smaller of a game's total dev cost, and nearly all of AAA title's cost is spent on art assets. This is a problem for all developers, particularly smaller independent devs, who are essentially stuck in the low-content arena of puzzle games and mario clones. This isn't to say that area isn't worthy of exploration, but sometimes us indies would like to pump out a nice fun FPS without the rest of the world going "wow that looks like ass"
If that's true... If it really is a small fraction of your dev costs to do the logic code, why not "buy the Caddy" for that part of the game, and really dazzle customers? The impact to your bottom line would be minimal, so it would seem to just make sense.
Information wants to be anthropomorphized.
The other thing is that a lower price tag could mean is that to someone who doesn't know anything, cheaper can mean inferior. I know I do this with ear buds for my MP3 player, I go in and say "I'm willing to spend 15 dollars on a new set of ear buds" and then by the shiniest 15 dollar ear buds, confident that I've dodged the bullet by not giving in and buying another five dollar pair.
That game was fun in a retarded way. Pick Guile and spam his sweep, you can cancel it into a flash kick whenever you want. NO WEAK!
I know the Gamecube connector is the same as the N64, but it is the same all the way back to the SNES, too?
Online play is a pretty big deal - at least for those who want to pay for Xbox Live.
Obligatory: the dreamcast had online street fighter 2 ages ago... though it was Japan only, and used modems.
I quit!
Wake me when they release Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
I have Street Fighter Collection, so I already own the game. But I'm willing to pay a few extra bucks for the convenience of having the game immediately available on my hard drive, with access to the XBox Live features and online play.
I'll probably be playing Blanka--some other characters are easier to win with, but somehow Blanka was always the most fun.
OK, I'm looking forward to Street Fighter, and I've been playing a lot of Robotron. I'm willing to shell out a few bucks to have them on my XBox 360 HD. But I hope that they go beyond the games that are already available on all of the classics collections. I'd love to see a full set of the original R-Type shooters, for example. And I'd definitely like to see more of the Capcom fighting games (and how about SNK?)
Another question is whether this will really be the arcade version of SFII. There was a rumor going around that it would be the Genesis version--hopefully that was in reference to the features, not the graphics.
I hate to tell you this, but that move has been outsourced to India.
You better watch out, there may be dogs about . .
Omega Red was probably the cheesiest, though wolverine was a close second. Was it 1 or 2 that featured the dirty lift kick?
It was light medium (both ducking kicks) to get them off their feet, then a light/heavy kick to pick them up off the ground and launch into an air combo. 'twas ugly.
You better watch out, there may be dogs about . .
I hate Microsoft! All those evil business practices, and poor, insecure software, and... OOH, SHINY.
