What does that have to do with external entities trying to 'manage my experience'?

I like a well designed and laid out book, but I don't want it dynamically changing based on how some external entity thinks I should peruse it. I prefer to use an index or table of context rather than have the book try to divine my intent.

Likewise with a web site. What on the net REQUIRES 'management of user experiences?'. Banking? I could find my account page just fine if they'd cut the cruft and make it lean and mean instead of fat and bloated. Shopping? I know what I want when I go to the site... I don't need junk flashed in my face. Reading the news? Likewise, I don't need some half-assed AI smacking me in the face with stuff I could just as easily find using a search or a table of contents or an index.

It's too bad, but such is life and language. The vulgar consistantly take words with precise and definate meanings and sully them. I guess what I'm saying is that to try to fight that kind of degredation is an exercise in futility and never ending frustration, and is best avoided.

don't know that there are other options out there with which they can do all the things they do now.

And more! Linux is WAY better at giving you options and stuff to do.

Like last week, my printer stopped working on my Slackware box, for some reason. Yeah, baby, I was in Fat City! I got to read man pages, learn a LOT about CUPS, for almost three hours of sheer unadulterated bliss! Windows, on the other hand, is not half as much fun. You just plug it in, and then what? I just worked. No tweaking? No man pages? No research on the net and with five inch thick books? Feh.

My girlfriend and I had countless hours of inspired convesation about how we really don't need to use Word or Excel to do the work on the .doc and .xls files our bosses send us. We can open our documents in Open Office, and it looks pretty good! Not EXACTLY what the boss wanted, but close enough, and it's FREE! And it's FUN dealing with those imported Word tables! Endless hours of joy cutting and pasting and re-formatting.

Oh, but it's the games in Linux which are the best. Getting OpenGL to work on my Slackware box... ahhhh, the memories. Kodak moments, all. And the dependencies! Wow, how much fun is THAT? My nipples are getting hard just thinking about it! Sure, half the games that supposedly worked on Linux I never could get to run, but the fun is in the journey, not the destination.

So, my friend, you are wrong. It's not that you "can do all the things they do now". The truth is, you end up doing that, and SO MUCH MORE!

See, the printer stopped working on my Slack install. I spent several hours to no avail.

It was the last straw. I'm a busy man. I work 37.5 hours writing software, and while I was willing to dick around with OS's "in my spare time" when I was younger, I've since lost my gumption or perhaps my sense of humor.

Fax in Slack? What a pain in the ass. Then there was the time my APC UPS wasn't talking to Slack. Never could get it to work. Finally rigged the goddammed Slackware box up so it knew power was out by polling an old modem.

Yeah, I know, I know, I picked Slackware, so what did I expect. You caught me at a bad time, when I've succombed to the dark side. Perhaps I should have tried Ubuntu. But my girlfriend got sick of excuses as to why she couldn't print, or use Excel or Word. I got sick of MAKING excuses and learning WAY to much about the OS when I just wanted a platform to do the Internet, and run my work. That, I've got.
