    We landed on the moon but this was partially to make sure the Russians did not do so first.

    And how many billions were spent so we could get bragging rights for 'first on the moon?' How many people starved to death on the planet, how many people died because of preventable diseases, etc, during that era.

    Just when I start thinking better about humanity, someone like you has to come along and remind me of how utterly stupid and unevolved humans are.

    The thing about the IR beams is that it is to clear the way, not just give the emergency vehicle 'the green light'

    The idea is that the IR beam turns the light to green... vehicles in front of the emergency vehicle go through the intersection and clear the way.

    If the lights go to 4 way red, the cars in front of the emergency vehicle will block the way and make things worse.

    You can edit HTML streams before they reach your browser using regexps (e.g. change 'leet speak to something less idiotic)

    It allows you to dynamically raise the intelligence of the net, and that is priceless.

    Ummm....why would you have SOURCE CODE on the machines you're using to test BINARIES?

    Ummm.... because in order to use a debugger and view program execution (e.g. 'step through' the program), you need the source code?

    SCO can't currently be shorted (I know, I checked).

    Shorting is accomplished by borrowing stock from someone and selling them. The player then pays the creditor back the same number of shares, plus a fee, in the future.

    The hope of the player is that the shares he uses to repay his borrowed shares can be obtained at a lower cost when time comes to pay up.

    In order to short a stock, some entity has to have some of that stock to 'loan'. Here's a shocker: nobody is willing to put up for shorting SCO shares worth appx $15 to recieve the same number of shares (which will almost certainly be worth less) in the future along with a fee.

    Well, there's a shock. Imagine that, a government buracracy, with management problems. Say it isn't so, Pa.

    Would we be happy with government made shoes? How about if the government went and made cars. Would you want to ride in D.C. engineering? Why is it that most rational beings agree that when you want a good product, get private enterprise into it (rah rah capitalism and all that), but when we want to go to space, we employ socialism?

    Get some profit motive in there. Some accountability, instead of the old 'gimme your taxes or you go to jail' bit followed by the tossing of money at thet issue. I can just imagine the heads that would roll if this happened in a real business, instead of the racket they've got going down at NASA.

    No, they don't have to find a way to pay for the shows. Personally, I wish they would just go away... I find them rather boorish and annoying.

    Seriously, though, I don't follow your point, or maybe I just don't understand it. So what if I'm two minutes, or two HOURS behind the neighbors. Unless they're hooting and hollering or otherwise disclosing what's happening before I get the chance to see it, what is the dealio?

    If it was just a matter of greed and not stupididy he would have put a fix in his machine so that the machine would not run at all with low batteries. As it stands, the inventor is now liable for injuries.

    Sounds to me like the inventor was just stupid.

    Litigation has grown, but it's not surprising why. Nobody can step before a court unless he's a lawyer. The judge in a case is probably a lawyer. Most prosecutors are lawyers. The people who make the laws... most of those guys are lawyers. Many if not most polititians are lawyers.

    It's a racket. The fix is in, and there's nothing we can do about it. Oh, sure, we could vote the bastards out, but that will never happen... the electorate buys into the fiction of two-party system much like they buy professional wrestling. The fix is in, just like wrestling... there's a good guy, and a bad guy, and they're really the same: scam artists tricking the gullible. They don't care which party wins, because whichever party wins, the lawyers will still be in power, and will still be able to abuse the system for their own ends.

    It's true.

    If you look at the HTML for The Book from the Slackware 9 CD's, most of the links don't work because they are mapped to a networked drive, using DOS conventions. And the meta tags in the HTML prove it was, at some point, edited with Word.

    The Book was probably edited properly, then some pinhead down the distribution chain used Word.

    That's EXACTLY what I want. What I'm looking for is a machine I can take to a meeting just for note-taking... bare bones, with a reasonable keyboard, and cheap. Don't want or need a PDA or games, just want a note-taking tool, which has to be able to switch keyboard layount to Dvorak.

    I'm thinking maybe an old 386 laptop... they've gotta be practically giving 'em away these days.

    Any ideas, anyone?

    Who could reccomend this to their CTO without a PIM? MS might be expensive but the stuff just works.

    Yeah, it works alright. Because management's hard for Outlook, our IT department makes us keep our machines running 24/7 with mandated re-boots every night so the continual stream of patches and security fixes.

    It's the height of irresponsibility to include Microsoft's Outlook on any desktop... that thing is the source of most of the headaches in corporate computing than all others put together (a major vector for viruses, trojans, etc.) The only reason it's got such devotion is because the PHB's love the calendar and the scheduling integration. But it's just not worth it, considering the grief.

    I gave up my cell phone years ago when I realized that 75% of the time I saw a cell phone, I saw it attached to the ear of a jackass, and I'm not taking any chances... I quit the things cold turkey.

    Not sure if the cell phone causes its user to become a jackass, or if jackasses use cell phones, but why take the chance unnecessarily?
