Basically what we want is XUL/PHP/mySQL (a very strong combination) is to become the new VB
Well, in that case, what we need is an IDE as good as Microsofts Visual Studio. And no, I don't want at emacs/VI war here:) Let's just face, newbie developers (and experienced ones as well) likes vstudio and it's a major reason people are hooked in the windows environment later on.
Ask yourself WHY open software has been so succesful. Because it's free, that's why! Because you can - with no loss (except, perhaps, lost income) - reproduce any number of linux distributions (e.g.). You can't do that with hardware. These things will cost just as a card from ATI or Nvidia will.
And before anyone says something about the machines being insecure, I was talking to the election commisioner for the county.
Oh, well if she said it, then it MUST BE TRUE I guess.
Also, I spoke to Bill Gates this afternoon, and he confirmed that Windows is a very secure and stable platform. So I guess gigabytes of Slashdot discussion ends here since he TOLD US SO.
This seems like the same kind of objectivity I would expect from Fox News:)

Paypal Grinds To A Halt

There are a lot of people, for a variety of reasons, who have been screwed out of getting a bank account from a regular bank. Because of negative reporting on chex systems, they can't get a regular checking account at all.
Yeah, they can be as happy as they want, but I for one am VERY happy that my bank checks up on other customers, and there are cases when it's obvious that PayPal should have done the same.
...given that it has so much caffeine as well. I haven't had any soda in three and a half years, and I can tell you that it's still difficult not to drink it. Just smelling it really makes me want to drink some, so it definitely had an effect on me, regardless of whether that could be officially classified as addiction.
Then of course it COULD be that you are simply "addicted" to sugar, and your body knows sodas are excellent sugar sources. Sugar is just as bad - if not worse - than fat. People stop eating fat and go for the Low Fat alternatives. The result? Increases in type II diabetes, tiredness, etc. The fast food industry loves sugar since it keeps you hungry after your food, making you eat twice the amount next time. and besides, sugar is cheap to handle (no cooling required etc). Try taking a look at GI, it's far better than Weight Watchers or Atkins...
RFID is IMO not inherently "evil". It is a tool, like a screwdriver. Now, a screwdriver can be used to turn screws, or it can be plunged into someone's head. RFID is fine with me, as long as:
1. I know it's being used 2. I'm not required to use it 3. I can turn it off
That sounds like ye olde cookie-discussions which ended up with us having to enable cookies anyway to get somewhere.
As with most technology which can cut costs for companys (imagine replacing the guy behind the counter with a computer and a RFID-scanner) there's no way out of this. RFID is here to stay, and it will be linked to your personal data.
Does it really matter? When you used some kind of bonus card in a store, you can be sure that store will register exactly what you purchase and when, and have that data relate to your personal data. It happens all the time.
But of course we shouldn't give up. But we're barking up the newly planted pinetree when we really should be cutting down the oak.
For the same reason the american government is digging up three year old intelligence reports for the lone sake of raising the threat level, and thereby controlling it's people (uniting it through fear and a common enemy).
Since adding ID checks is cheaper and less controversal than taking care of actual reasons behind terrorism (third world poverty and the stupid foreign politics of the USA / west world) this is the way to go. Plus, it adds a false sense of security for american citizens, which helps Bush in the upcoming election.
Come on, what kind of music do you guys listen to? Britney Spears? There is no such thing as an "album filler" on serious albums. Are you forgetting that music is an art form? A very profitable art form perhaps, but still an art form. Singles, tracks that are supposed to draw our attention to an album, are often very different from the rest of the album, which often consists of music that one has to listen to a couple of times before you appreciate it, and I know for a fact that I wouldn't have discovered most of the bands I love today if I wouldn't have been forced to buy the album (today I always buy / download the entire album instead of just the song I liked).
Don't get me wrong - I don't like the music industry and it's evil sons (RIAA, DMCA,...) but you are (as always with./) too focused on the nerd/laywer part of this. Music isn't technology or law, it's art. And don't forget that. That is still the reason while we're having this discussion.
We had the exact thing happening to us at the company I work for. We had a web-based service aimed at business customers, and we thought it was a good idea to let poeple use it for free for a while (while we were testing and tuning).
Noone was interested.
Later, we we actually started to charge money for the service, everyone was interested - now we have more customers than we can handle.

Using a MS Sidewinder Gamepad for control, me and my friend were spending some time playing Q2 in the CUBE at KTH (Royal School of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden)... so, anyone else been playing with these kind of toys?
... you'd know that the only OS compatible with alien networks is Mac OS! I this film, we can see Jeff Goldblum easily uploading his virus into the mainframe, using Apple Talk!
It's as easy as that!
It's seems very unlikely that we would have a future where every single home user would download the new AMD Athlon K399 1 Billion MHz, although I must say that the idea of me going to my computer resaler, and having _them_ print a copy (no more "out of stock" replies") would be really cool.
You can go to the average garbage dump and find at least one computer that will run something like Debian without a GUI
Yeah, and many non-techie users will surely benefit from WR0KING IN THE #%!#"%! SHELL?!!
Isn't this, among other things, about getting linux on the desktop?

Boy did that last sentence make me dizzy or was it just the lack of punctuation btw or perhaps it was, the strange way it was configured I don't know.
You go ahead and to that. Even tell RIAA. They won't care. It's the store losing money, not them.
:)
But hey, at least you're actually STEALING something from someone
Yeah, scared to death, I am.

What are these geeks going to do? beat me with their palm pens? throw UNIX manuals at me?
on the other hand, they might just pretend they know me. that would make me move in a minute

I guess that it just seems to good to be true.
