  1. It is not that bad on Software Libre: DoHS Switches, Commerce Slights · · Score: 1

The original draft called for open source to be "supported" and the final draft says "encouraged." Here is the final compromised sentence: "Development and deployment of open-source software should be encouraged, as appropriate, as should open standards for ICT (information and communications technology) networking." That is not that bad. Encouraging open source can mean supporting open source. I like the supporting better, but all they did was make the wording less definite.

  2. It will be easier on Is the New Microsoft Office Really Open? · · Score: 2

If Microsoft keeps its schemas proprietary, looking at the XML code will make it easier to figure out one's own schema than the way it is now figuring out the binary Word format. But people likely will still want to save in the default Word format, instead of XML. Hmm, using the XML output may make it easier to decode the Word format. That would be nice. Microsoft is not going to give away its advantage, but I think they are confident of their market share to let things become just a little easier for the other word processors.

  3. His view of the world differs from Tolkien on David Brin On LOTR · · Score: 2
Let me avow upfront that I share the more recent, upstart belief in universities, democratic accountability, science and human improvability -- one that questions the fated persistence of "eternal" stupidities. Above all, any "golden age" lies in our future. It has to. Or what are we striving for?

David Brin views us as progressing to a 'golden age" whereas Tolkien as a Christian sees humankind as corrupt, unable to save ourselves from ourselves, and needing outside help (i.e. God). I don't think Tolkien was trying to glorify the past, rather he in his underlying beliefs in this fantasy is trying to point out that there is no solution by our making (all the rings) to the corruption. In LOTR there is a sense of outside help, of providence, that guides the events on this knife edge to a good solution. (Frodo was meant to have the ring.) So there is hope, but it is not found in the rings.

Stable 2 parent families are important for society. I have seen a number of friends who have had to work through some serious issues because their childhold family had serious problems with broken marriages being the most common issue. Check out the book The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce for a psychologist's startling findings.

  5. Unfortunately on An Unbiased Analysis of Gun Crime vs. Gun Control? · · Score: 2

It has a lot to do with American culture. Canada's culture is different and they have less killing per gun. It is the same with most other cultures. In America one gets angry, grabs a gun and kills a loved one. In America guns show you are the big man on the street. In America thieves feel it necessary to carry a gun and homeowners feel insecure without a gun.

Do I have an answer to the problem? No I don't, but the culture needs to change, and I believe gun control laws will not make any difference. One must deal with the sense of power in owning a gun and the fear of others owning guns.

So why is it we are very interested and passionate about our origins? Why do evolution theories or creation stories peak our interest? Do you think that our origins define who we are and how we relate in this world? I think the answer in part is yes.

Maybe we should promote laws that make everyone's activities transparent. We like 1 and 2, but reality is that it is either 1 and 3, or 2 and 4. And 1 and 3 promotes accountability while 2 and 4 is an "arms race" to see if one can remain hidden. If we could check and make certain the FBI was doing its job properly, it would reign in any questionable activities.

My wife drives a 2000 Toyota Echo and it does have more power than my Civic VX, but I don't think the difference is all that noticable. (Thanks for the info on the Hybrid Civic engine.)

Those that limit the customer rights are those that call the customer a consumer. They think of the customer as consuming their product, not purchasing it, but that is not the way the customer views it. I see the entertainment industry trying to limit "consumption" to individual times so they can make more money. Unfortunately they will discover that their customer thinks differently and they will have to scramble to save their business.
