It sounds crazy, but that's what happens. Go Google for the article with the Israeli Mossad torture expert. You have deep subconsious shit that goes off to make you a martyr. It doesn't work for everybody, but for a lot of people it becomes just so satisfying to piss off the assholes trying to fuck with you at some point that you don't really care about the little nagging prison time and everything anymore.

You think you'll enter a theatre again to pirate a movie you already paid to see so some stranger can see a crapy copy for free?

Yep. The ugly facts of psychology. Between acting out of spite and acting out of self-interest, spite almost always wins. That's why torture never works. Between not having them jab a spike into your balls, and making the jerk who wants to do that feel like he's bad at torture, you go with making the guy feel bad.

A good half of the time, the guy you make the example of gets out and goes out and does it again, just on principle. That's why we invented "penitentiaries", you want to make the guy feel like he did something wrong before you let him out, otherwise you've just made it more likely he'll do it again.

I actually paid to see Colin at the Comedy Cellar, right before Tough Crowd went on. We were all just "what the fuck happened since he quit SNL?" Not like he was that great on SNL either, but he should have at least been funnier than the announcer guy. We kinda gave him the benefit of the doubt and assumed he was stoned, but then Tough Crowd came on the next week and proved that wrong.

Call me back when you build something to get me to the ISS, or the moon, maybe, or at least offers me something I can't already get at Six Flags for $20.

Do you really think Iraq has the manpower and know-how to repair an oil pipeline that was destroyed by terrorists in TWO days?

Um, yes? They did pretty fine pumping their billions of barrels of oil for the past 70, 80 years, and repairing the damage after countless wars. I don't see why they'd start sucking now. They produce a fuck of a lot more oil than we do, that's for sure, and they've had a hell of a lot more practice than whatever 3rd-string dorks Halliburton shipped over. The only reason we bring in Halliburton is they import Greek and Russian muscle who don't speak Arabic and are, frankly, just too dumb to take bribes to sabotage things. It's not like they're any good at this stuff, the army gets bids from the Iraqi engineering firms who built the stuff in the first place, to have it fixed in 1/4 the time and at 1/10th the price, it's just that we don't trust them to do it.

A guy like him? This is not some hippie. (well, he actually has a lot in common with your Bjorn Lomborg types, hippies of a sort) People trying to come up with reasons why global warming doesn't exist use his theories far more often than environmentalists do. How many times have you seen the "as CO2 increases more plants will grow to compensate you filthy liberal!!!!" right here on Slashdot? That's the Gaia theory, straight from this guy's book.

Of course, they also manage to combine that with a belief that deforestation and extinctions don't effect that moderating effect, but that's beside the point. Lovelock never had any problem with nuclear power. He's an environmentalist, not a anti-nuke activist. People that hate nukes hate them because they hated the cold war and extended that into a hatred of nuclear chemistry in general. That or they just took phyics in college and don't like all this stuff about hurtling beta particles penetrating their precious organs. They don't hate nuclear power because it somehow disrupts the balance of nature.

This is just a weird article. Sure, he's right and all, but I don't get this crap with the big capitalized "Left", whatever the fuck that is, and just the random politicization of what's mostly just a pretty straightforward factual point. Of course, Mr. "Steamy Mobile" doesn't really help with trying to make "nyah nyah you liberals suck!" the core point and trying to claim Slashdot is on the forefront of scientific progress.
