  4. How are .torrents illegal? on MPAA Goes After More Bittorrent Site Operators · · Score: 1, Insightful

Before you flame me on my headline, I am talking about the .torrent files, not what can be downloaded from them.

I feel a .torrent file is just like a movie review. Both contain information about the movie, the only difference being that a computer reads the hashes and a human reads the review. This make be a bit of a loose analogy, but go with me here.

You can't figure out the whole movie just by reading one review, just like a computer can't figure out the file based on what hashes it recieves from the tracker.

But with the same information, you can make sure you are going to see the right movie by reading a review, just as a computer can make sure you are downloading the right file by comparing hashes.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think any defense will stand for making torrents illegal. If they declare them illegal, they will have to make movie reviews, and everything else that even describes a movie illegal.

This is one thing that I'm wondering about.

Sure US copyright law allows one copy, that is well understood. But if you release it under the GPL, isnt that considered a different kind of copyright with the rules set forward under the license that every geek knows by heart?

For example: If you release it under the US copyright system, one copy is allowed, thats it, no exceptions.
But if you release it under the GPL, the US copyright laws are null and void against this software and they go by the GPL laws which allows unlimited copies as long as its compliant with the GPL laws.

Am I right or am I just seeing this wrong?

I got into a discussion with a government prof where I go to college and we both came to the same conclusion.

Either a whole new government needs to be put in place with a revoultion, or we need to elect an entire whole new set or reps and congressmen. Without one of those happening, the government is gonna dig a hole so deep, its going to be illegal to own "TECH" (Relavance to a Sliders Episode)

I'm not pushing for any one type of government, we just need people in there that dont give a flying rats ass about major corporations giving them millions of dollars behind everyone's back. Also, Im not looking for the black g-men to come knocking at my door because I want a new government.

If you look hard enough, you will see that all the government cares about is the stuff that they get from major corporations that want them to draft this kind of stuff. They don't care about what effect laws have on them. They'll just stay in session all year long so that the constitution protects them from prosicution if the shit hits the fan.

They say the U.S. is the best place to live in the world. Well I'm starting to think different.
The only way that people can excape this law will be to move to another country. And if it happens it wouldnt suprise me if Canada saw a lot more of Americans asking for residency.

So write up your congressman and say:
"Hell no, don't vote for this.
A vote for this is a vote for total control by the government.
I dont want total control like the major corporations want and I'm the one that matters because you represent me.
And it doesnt matter how much they pay you to say how much you like it becuase if you vote yes... I'll vote no next election."

Now there have been rednecks that go to the local gas station up the road and fight. That they get in trouble for. But if they went home and then went to the gas station, the cops would come.

So even though im not writing this in the school,

Ok, back in the day when I was a Junior in HS, I was talking my AP Comp.Sci. course.
One day, after seeing that the computers had slowed down quite considerably, I began poking aroundon my system and found a virus chewing at CPU cycles.

So, trying to play Mr Nice Geek, I fired up the anti-virus and removed it.

It just so happened that the teacher watched me do it, and gave me a pat on the back for it and told me to clean it from the lab (turns out every computer had it...)

The next day, all the computers had been turned off and unplugged, and we were not to even touch the PC's. When I got in there I saw the prinipal and the county netadmin, and they pulled me into a office.

What they had to say just blew my mind. They told me that i was responsible for infecting the lab with the virus I had discovered the day before. After hearing all this BS, i tryed to prove that I didnt do it, but trying to get a idea to them is about as hard as trying to cut a tree down with a herring.

When I confronted the teacher that said to clean the lab, he swore up and down that he saw me put the virus on the computer. So I took the punishment, not being able to change their minds.
But I did get the last laugh, every one of my grades shot through the roof, and I continue to this day to fix their computers.

I just get so tired of the school administrators taking their stupidity out on the kids. When they dont know how they did something or dont understand it, they try to lock away that knowledge so it wont happen anymore.
