  1. Re:hire professionals on Students Outpacing Teachers With Online Skills · · Score: 1

This'll only work for schools that have the money (those that have the fancy labs). Those are the exception, not the rule...and I think it'll be awhile before we come anywhere close to bringing most of the schools up to the level where they can both understand the need for technology education AND understand the need for an IT professional to administer their technology education program.

I completely see your point. However in my initial post I said that I have a library of MP3 files, and I convert these to WMA (in a lower bitrate) to send to my player--the only use for the WMA files. There is no use for the files beyond this. I don't "support" WMA in any meaningful way, I just use it because it offers decent quality audio for my nomad IIMG at low bitrate (64 kbps). If OGG was supported I'd much rather use that. I need that low bitrate because I don't feel like buying a SmartMedia card, and I'd rather have 2 hours of music than one on the player.

How many people in positions of authority at high schools/middle schools (principals, "technology coordinators" for that matter) understand what the average student needs to learn about computers, and what computers are not fit to teach?

...I have to ask: does anyone know of standalone (meaning not a PDA) MP3 players that handle the OGG format as an alternative to MP3? That's the only thing holding me back from using exclusively OGG from now on. My Creative Nomad IIMG only has firmware to play WAV, MP3 and WMA. I suppose I could always use OGG and convert my files to WMA when I want to use them on the player, but that's really a pain. If anyone knows of a different firmware that can play OGG on the Nomad, that'd be even more appreciated.

Most hardware review sites I've read commented that upping the FSB speed was the best way AMD could reclaim the speed crown...Intel regularly uses much higher FSB clocks with their chips (in the neighborhood of 533 MHz). I may be missing some crucial aspect of AMD's strategy but that seems to be what is holding them back right now, from a high-level standpoint.

That's what I meant...just copy the disc to your hard drive (after it is "decrypted" for installation - this is probably the hardest step) and crack it. Cracking means removal of references to the smart chip. And there's no way it could "refuse to decrypt itself" since the data doesn't change on the disc, period. Now I believe, as with WinXP, the cracking will be done by a few, while the cracked ISOs will be used by many. Granted, the cracking is difficult, but once it's done, it will be freely distributed.

Granted, Windows XP had nothing this advanced on the disc itself, but the methods of circumventing this new protection device will likely be the same as the ways WinXP's product activation was circumvented. Just reverse engineer the code, find the references to the smart chip, and remove those references. Granted, one won't be able to just "copy the disc", but cracked ISOs can still be theoretically distributed. It'll be interesting to watch.

YES, it IS a one-time investment. A few of the other replies to this parent said that a program listing isn't available with a PC PVR, while at least with TiVo you get it with a subscription. Check the ATI AIW 8500DV interface--it has FREE program listings that are downloaded from the internet. This, in my opinion, is vastly superior to having to pay for listings on a set-top box. However, the TiVo and other set-top PVRs certainly have their advantages, that may exceed PC solutions.
