    I don't have time to play long "epics" anymore. A 50 hour game is just *way* too long, unless it's a really incredible RPG. Frankly, I've not seen such a game since Xenogears or Skies of Arcadaia. No 50 hour game has been that worthwhile in recent years.

    So, I thrive on stuff like Ikaruga and Pikmin. Metroid Prime is fun as well. All of these games take less than 20 hours to finish. Ikaruga can be finished within 30 minutes or so, but good luck getting good enough to do that (unless you play long enough to get bonus continues). I played some Star Fox Adventures recently, and while it wasn't the best game I had ever played, it was worth $20 for 15 hours of play. Viewtiful Joe is another game that you can pick up and play on occasion, without some cliche storyline that tries to be too deep.

    These days, I just want innovative gameplay on top of classic styles. I want games that I can pick up and enjoy when I have free time, but not games that I have to devote more than 50 hours to. I think that developers are making a switch back to these short, but fun games. Keep em coming.

    Sun should be finding new avenues for income. They are being destroyed by the changing times and the changing needs of companies, if anything. They've got a big name in the server world. How about they use that to their advantage, and offer more competitively priced hardware based on Linux? I love the new "Export to PDF" feature (no worries about someone viewing a file intact). The UI is faster. Everything has improved greatly.

    If OO.o keeps on getting this much better with each release, it's soon going to become that greatest Office program around (sadly, it's still lacking database software, unless you count StarOffice's ADABAS package). Battery power isn't too bad if you power the unit on today's NiMH AA cells. I use these with mine (1600 mAH), and I get several hours of play between charges. It's an inexpensive solution to the short play times of alkaline cells.

    BTW: 6 is the correct number of cells. In temrs of its size, it is smaller than the Lynx, but only a bit larger than the original Game Boy. It's mostly just thick. It has extra weight because the LCD screen is protected by a thick glass instead of plastic. The batteries really add several ounces to the weight.

    It's probably one of my greatest treasures in my gaming collection.

  17. Re:Turbo Express on History Of Portable Gaming Discussed · · Score: 1

    1990 is correct for the Japanese release of the PC Engine GT (Turbo Express). It's a fabulous machine, and was very well designed. The PC Engine had some of the greatest games of that era, matching many of Nintendo's offerings but with better graphics and sound. It's a shame that it never really picked up outside of Japan. This unit was released before the Atari Lynx, but was came out at roughly the same time as the Sega Game Gear.

    I've got a Turbo Express that I play quite frequently, actually. I had always wanted one when I was gorwing up, but they were just too expensive. Finally, about 2 years ago, I managed to score one *BRAND NEW* from TZD at only $150. I just love this little machine.

    It's a shame that many haven't had the chance to play it. I've got a Street Fighter 2 import that runs on a portable that is 13 years old! Sadly, the unit only has two buttons (like the NES did), so you have to switch between punches and kicks with the select button (There was a 6-button "NEC Avenue" pad that was used on the consoles). All of the games were interchangable with the console units. Games like Devil's Crush and Dungeon Explorer will forever go down as all-time greats of their genre. There is just so much to play on this little portable. If you can score the Japanese imports, you can really find some goodies like the best version of Salamander (Life-Force for the NES), and all of the great Bomberman games (most were domestic as well).

    So, I wonder why they didn't include it in this article. It took more than 10 years for Nintendo to release a portable that topped it, and arguably, the PC Engine was one of the greatest gaming success stories in Japan. It's so easy for Americans to overlook this great hardware and software.

    It still has survived the test of time quite well. It's got a growing fanbase and new games for the PC Engine SuperCD system are being developed even to this day.

    MPlayer isn't too tough to install, and it plays QT6 files very nicely (including the trailer). The documentation is unfortunately very intimidating, so it makes it look like more of a hassle than it really is. Here are some tips for some of you that have difficulties with running MPlayer. These may help you get better output as well.

    A) Download these codec packs from the MPlayer codec site at
    http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codec s/

    "Latest Win32 codecpack"
    "QuickTime6 DLLs"
    "RealPlayer9 codecs (including RV40)"

    B) Put Windows codecs in /usr/win32

    C) Build and install the player (after downloading the source, of course). ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-gui
    make
    make install (as root)

    D) Run with one of the following:
    mplayer -vo xv -ao sdl filename
    mplayer -vo xv -ao oss filename
    mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa9 filename

    Or as a last ditch effort...
    mplayer -vo x11 -ao esd
    mplayer -vo x11 -ao artsd

    XV output is the best way to play back video. It's fast and it's pretty, but your card has to support it. Most chips that work under XF86 (outside of generic framebuffer mode) will work with this. X11 mode is a much slower fallback. There's an OpenGL option as well, which may work for some users.

    Optionally, put the mplayer options in your .mplayer/config file and you won't have to enter the ao or vo stuff. For example...

    vo=xv
    ao=sdl

    You can enable the GUI with:
    gui=yes

    I prefer not using it though, as CPU load is increased quite a bit in many cases when using the GUI.

    There are lots of extra options for stuff like 5.1 sound and other things, but these are the basics to get it working well.

    D) Take the moon for ransom by means of Linux/MPlayer powered androids.
