Don't discount the "general browser" market. Opera may face a lot of competition there but it is an absolutely enormous space. Even if Opera only ever achieves a few percent of web browsing computers that is still an _enormous_ number of people contributing to their bottom line through either paying for it or through the adverts.

IE/Mozilla may well dominate browser stats, but the percentage numbers don't reflect just how big the market is. I know if I had a revenue generating product that 1% of web users were using I'd be a happy chappy!

It's too bloody confusing. Half of Slashdot seemingly doesn't understand the difference between copyright and patents. The vast majority of the general public wouldn't relate to it at all. (Though this is one area where projects such as Creative Commons may help in the long term.)
What can we do to force politicians to bring these issues to the forefront?

Isn't going to start handing it out for free.

The only real reason to want the code is to find exploitable holes in the software. If you're paying 24k so you can do that you presumably want to use those exploits for a purpose. Releasing the sourcecode and risking exploits becoming public (and then patched) devalues your investment.

  14. Solution to the problem on Movie Industry to sue File Sharers · · Score: 2, Insightful

The MPAA should stop suing people and instead concentrate on hooking people up with boyfriends and girlfriends.

Couples got to the movies more often than individuals.

In part that is so they can stop having to talk to each other for a while without risking offence.

  15. It's not that unlikely on Movie Industry to sue File Sharers · · Score: 1

I think that a lot of people download movies/songs over peer to peer simply because "they can".

The desire to actually watch a particular movie or obtain a particular song may not be all that great . But you've got a lot of bandwidth and you can pull the movie for free so why not?

Once some sort of real cost is added to that people will start thinking twice. They lived without downloadable movies before and don't really need the MPAA following through on their threat so they will just stop.

Of course, that doesn't mean those people will necessarily be handing over more money to members of the MPAA.

I certainly don't recall anywhere near the amount of derision coming from the rest of the world during Clinton's stint as president. Even during the sex scandal the rest of the world was at most a mildly amused spectator.

George Bush as president is such a mind bogglingly funny idea it almost defies parody.

While it may be easier to "tear down than build up" it seems it only takes money and connections to build a cretin into a president.

You are right in a way though, while the US talks to the world as if it is God's gift to the planet the rest of the world will certainly enjoy poking fun at it. Disdain and disrespect for those who hold themselves as better than you is not just natural, it's probably healthy too.

That doesn't just go for the US. In most western democracies I've been to there has been a healthy lack of respect for those in power. It's part of keeping the bastards honest. Sadly it seems, at least from afar, that too many Americans take criticism of their president as an affront to the country itself rather than an indication he might not be doing a good enough job for your country.

At the end of the day though those that are pointing out that your emporer has no clothes are right, he's a moron plain and simple.

Then pconnect is certainly the way to go as it significantly cuts down the overhead of each page because you don't need to establish a connection to the database on every page call.

All you need to do is limit the number of clients Apache will serve to the same number (or a little fewer) of db connections the DB is limited to, thus getting the maximum usage the db configuration will allow and a slightly nicer error response.

If you have multiple databases on the DB server then persistant connects are probably not the way to go though, because a lot of them may be laying idle and wasted at any one point.
