Firstly nothing there states that the Windows.Forms implementation knowingly violates any IPR. It merely states the procedure for dealing with a situation where IP claims are made.
Secondly C# and the CLI are valuable and useful to Open Source/Free Software regardless of Windows.Forms or any current or future MS patented.Net extensions.
A Windows.Forms implementation is certainly useful and valuable. But Mono's worth is not tied to it. Take the software in this story for example, Dashboard does not depend on Windows.Forms.
Where is this acknowledgement if IPR infringement?
The patents essential to implementing C# and the CLI are available on a "royalty-free and otherwise RAND" basis so the core, and most important part of Mono is safe.
Oooh, it the IP bogeyman, run run!

If the Open Source/Free Software community runs scared every time IP is vaguely mentioned then it's the community that suffers.
Betcha students can't sneak them out of the pub either
I think you are vastly underestimating the thieving abilities of drunk students. They could be chained to a 200 kilo block of concrete and still go missing.
In fact, you'd probably lose more because it would be seen as a challenge.
Not story quality.
Not interested by a story? Then just ignore it. Other people may well be interested in it and shouldn't have to read your self-important whining. A lot of people, myself included, do like reading Slashdot so as to be occasionally introduced to stuff that "no one's ever heard of".
I don't think this is guided in the breeding sense. If you breed something you have a concrete goal, a certain colour fur, increased longevity.
In this case the criteria for selection are not defined. Intelligence may play a part in an individual selection but the environment the poems live in is not directed by any one intelligence.
I'm no film buff, but of the non-english speaking movies I do hear about I think the vast majority of them are French. They must be doing something right.
So obviously Mozilla aren't alone in seeing value in that. With Opera now releasing for Linux with a couple of days of a Windows release we already see some benefits.
It is certainly time to review decisions made on Mozilla. Not with any mind to assign blame or proclaim that something was an obvious mistake but to calmly appraise with the benefit of hindsight in an attempt to learn.
Certainly "it is not possible for scientists to say with certainty how the universe was prior to its existence". I've never heard one claim otherwise, though I have read theories that state it is categorically impossible to know what was before.)
However the "origins of life" are not necessarily a one off historical event the sort of which we are forever prevented from revisiting. Indeed, one of the questions is whether life has originated independantly in different places. We do not know whether we can "observe, record, repeat the process". SETI is looking for evidence that it is a process that may have occurred independantly a number of times.
by letting fear of Microsoft dictate what you think people should and should not build.
You're yielding, not those building Mono.
Presumably involves knees and testicles.
in some ways. It is good fun, which is why I'm $25 poorer and still awake at 3am...
I was wondering too. Presumably it's something to do with titanium, rather than anything to do with the queen of the fairies or a satellite of Uranus.
How many other industries compete by actively trying to make their product worth less to the buyer?

are the frequency of voting and the degree to which the democracy is indirect.
When democracy is direct and frequent it tends to work pretty well (eg Slashdot moderation).
When it is infrequent (vote every X years) and/or indirect (you vote for someone, who then represents you when voting) it becomes less effective.
As far as the best leaders not getting to the top the problem isn't democracy, the problem is that there isn't enough democracy.
Using and IP address that is permitted access to the site would be roughly equivalent to using a DVD player that is permitted access to DVDs.
Nothing is being circumvented, you are just using a device that has been permitted access.

Wow!
Then surely SCO's actions pertain to your right to do so.
And is probably a tad occupied with that.
Paricularly while it was still downloading and a bit fuzzy.
Sort of makes sense once you see the Planet Of The Apes version.
That prevents most people driving a lot of those cars in real life.

I have no idea what they mean, but I get spam in one asian character set or another fairly frequently.
It will be nice to see some articles in the mainstream press showing that Linux is still marching on regardless of SCO's drum beating.
1) Someone posted an ad to a forum.
2) Someone on the forum demonstrates his l33t whois and google skills.
3) Lots of fanboys cheer on our hero.
The net effect? Very little.
With an AI opponent you play so the opponent loses their clothes as fast as possible.
With a live opponent you play so you both lose your clothes at approximatly the same rate.
