ALT tags are for the most part used for screen readers. Unnecessary images, used just to enhance the look of the page are often given alt="" values so that the screen reader will skip the image entirely (ie: read nothing instead of saying "image foo.jpg is here with no alt tag").
Is covered many many many times in many other books (did I mention the word many).
I just finished the somewhat overrated, but entertaining Da Vinci Code which mentions this in addition to several other interesting. The presentation is that of fiction, which adds entertainment, but detracts from the believability.
Also the movie Pi, which I probably need not mention here, speaks of this to some length.
Final question being, does this book really add to my knowledge of the subject? I think I've heard all of the examples of where this ratio can be found in nature, is this guy just beating a dead horse? The review doesn't really imply that there's anything new here.
Fads never die, they just become unprofitable. Keep on dumping money down this product line, I'll go watch Power Rangers Super Crazy Ultra Monkey Donkey Clown Force Turbo.
speaking of the Daily Show and Lieberman (mind you, I'm a liberal, just liked the comment)
"And then there's Lieberman, for those of you us who wanted to vote for Bush, but didn't feel he was Jewish enough." - Jon Stewart
In the end, Lieberman, Tipper and the whole slew of Republicrats need to stop the censorship drive and work to promote parental awareness. You can't blame an R rated movie when it's viewed by minors, you blame the asshat parents who let them see it. This goes for every type of media, period, the end.
I find resumes to be fairly stock and I think that's the way a lot of HR people see them. "This applicant seems to meet the criteria" and then they should pass them on to someone technical to find out how many of their listed skills are BS (not Bachelor of Science). A good HR person underlines keywords and will ask them to expound on their team-playing and weaknesses (read BS compatable strengths) in a preliminary interview. I think the point of this isn't to so much guage your usefulness as a member of a group, but to figure out how good you can blather about useless information. The ability to fluff a page of technical information into a painfully simple 4 pages of instruction manual is a useful skill (note the length of this post). To guage how well this person works in a group, you should check their references. Personally, my GPA out of college was quite craptacular, but anyone I worked for/with would speak very highly of my work ethic when you actually paid me to do stuff.
No, the biggest hiring problem in picking a developer isn't resumes, it's ties. The CS career fair at school was like an art teacher trying to explain why colors clash. Purple paisley with yellow dots, my God... two words of advice for all those job hunters out there: club stripes.
But would they really give up potentially damaging information? I think they'd give them access to a grocery list and friendly banter between colleagues. At most some documents that were dummied up to make them look important without showing any factual strategy. The article seems to imply that some of the information is potentially damning.
Furthermore, who leaked to Novak? Democrat or Republican staffer? The implication of the article is Republican, but it makes a big difference in the argument either way.
I try not to post anything about my political beliefs on Slashdot, I find it to be -1 Offtopic. But seriously, they really need to go down for this one.
I used to take showers when I couldn't figure stuff out in college. [Insert joke about the smelly CS student] I found that just getting away from the code for a bit and doing just about anything that's not terribly distracting (video games, TV, etc.) could let your mind wander. My roomate would laugh when I would get changed and get right back on the computer and solve a problem that I had been bitching about for hours.
Special note: Dry yourself thoroughly, enthusiasm is no reason to get electricuted.
Just wait until congress realizes that rap music and video games are teaming up! Considering the only rap they've ever heard probably mentioned killing a cop and the only video game they've ever heard of is Vice City. It's really just a matter of time before their knees start jerking towards some moronic legislation that'll never pass.
Too soon to tell, I think all the stuff with Hayden Christenson is stupid as well as the redoing of the voices of the Stormtroopers. Taking out other people's contributions to the legend is wrong for the sake of the art and mean-spirited.
Why would the spirit of Padme be at the end also? I thought only Jedi masters could do this before they finally joined with the force.
Changing the music also seems like a bad idea, it again distorts the orginal art and flow of the movie. You can upgrade sound _quality_, but leave the original tracks alone.
Come to think of it, I'll stick with my original letterbox VHS until they disintegrate. The originals were perfect, including their imperfections, it's part of what made it an incredible film. Lucas changing the films to support his lackluster plotlines and mediocre characters from the first few movies is a horrid affront to the fans and his own work.
It was freakin' Lucas (as South Park pointed out) who lead the charge to keep movies from being colorized. I wish he could apply the same logic here.
I think LOTR made believers out of this crowd. Proof that enough money, love, time and geekdom can pull off a quality interpretation.
You'll never get a direct translation, even in a short story. A raised eyebrow or a sardonic smile means a lot more when written down than it would if you made a point of zooming in on it. Not to mention that imagery and metaphor are difficult to pull off without narration, which is too often a cheaply used device and completely blows the subtlety it had on the page.
If they'll ever make another good movie, it'll have to follow the same formula as the originals. I'm thinking Thrawn has to be some powerful intimidating actor that we've never heard of. Preferably British, since many of the military guys in the first ones had British accents. Thrawn's accent is supposed to be a little foreign too though, so maybe another European who learned English from a Brit (which would aid in the "never heard of him" factor).
He had two didn't he? The one with the original Thrawn and the one with the (to prevent spoiler) other Thrawn? Either way I agree, the Star Wars books were okay, but his were by far the best.

painful to say that I'm curious, let me know
Bye reeding thus lycense agerment, thee promeses...
With this on my walls and those window LCD's I can finally live my dream of never leaving my parents' basement!
Srinidhi was my Freshman C professor a few years back. Now that I'm an alumni *with money*, I think I should get one for the A I got then.

I've been waiting for years for someone to pick up my script for "Tetris: The Musical"

another short article from GCN on the subject.
Think my Windows box will be upset when it knows how much I hate it?
"Execute command control-alt-kill!"
and instead will direct you to diebold.com

Dazzler!
or maybe Namor... God, I hate Namor...
didn't see that one, but looking at the photos on IMDB, I'd say he looks like a good fit. Maybe a stronger jawline though.
