It just seems like another attempt to jack up prices by introducing a new medium. I know that it provides superior quality, blah blah blah, but really: is it worth $30 a pop?

$30 a pop? What DVD's are you buying. Most of the ones I see are between $17 and $23. Some of the special editions with a shitload of content are near $30. Box sets are more. I find you get a lot of content for the higher priced DVD's. Plus, as you said, the quality is amazing.

I'd rather download the movie (I'm not saying I'd pirate it, although I do sometimes) legitimatly, amd I'd pay $5, or maybe even $10 if they would just let me do it.

You'd want to download a movie for $5 or $10, and watch it most likely on a small computer screen?

Uhhh I'll take DVD any day over that hassle.

Yes, Carlin, the person this guy was essentially quoting, has very insightful commentary when it's not taken out of context.

Last time I checked, I haven't heard about anyone writing a book about stamps appear on TV. By your logic, Stamp collecting must be far-far worse than sex or farting.

Carlin's original joke, albeit decade(s?) old and not as applicable as it used to be, was that you can talk about fucking on TV as long as you don't call it "fucking." However, you can't even talk about farting on TV.

Obviously today that is not true so much...

Personally, I prefer his commentary on prostitution:

Sharpness should always be down low, especially on a nice TV. All sharpness does is add data to the picture that was not there originally. In this case, it makes the edges stand out by increasing the contrast between dark and light areas. This is bad. If you want that film to look as good as it did in the theatre, turn the sharpness DOWN. Use Avia to get it set correctly. Same thing goes for the games, the sharpness needs to be down, or it just adds crap to the picture that shouldn't be there.

Sharpness is jacked up high for showroom floors, so the picture looks artifically clear in the bright lights. In an ideal setting, you turn it way down.

In this show, there were huge battles and problems in the world in the next 500 years. There are other weapons available, but people are still using shotguns, presumably because they are cheap and easy to create. They are mechanical, not electronic. Etc.

Seems entirely plausible in this version of the future.
