As a poster in the HP/Linux story wrote today, to this day some hardware vendors have contracts with MS that require them to sell a Windows license with every system, even if they're going to run Linux. Maybe THAT is what Microsoft is really celebrating. 25 years and going...
I bought recently a IBM laptop that had XP pre-installed (yes, a nice XP license sticker at the bottom). I called the finnish Microsoft and asked about returning the "sticker" as I am running Linux. They told me that they do not take it back and that if I want to return it I should call the OEM and in the future, if I want a computer without Microsoft I should buy one that doesn't have their OS pre-installed (yeah right). So I called IBM. To make a story short: If I would have liked to return the XP license I would have been required to return the laptop altoghter as the license for XP was tied to this individual computer. So now I have nice sticker at the bottom which is worthless:)
Microsoft only have got where they are today by standing on the shoulders of giants - people who were free with their (highly insightful) thoughts. Don't they remember this?
So what we now need is a kid that makes a shortfilm about Bill walking around, pointing his finger at various peoples head, laughs like a maniac and says "Your idea is now mine". I bet MS would love that:)
Windows XP runs fine with 64MB of RAM. It was killing the harddrive though and startup from when the machine was put on to when software firewall and virusscanner had started was in the range of 10-15 minutes.
If you don't think that could happen, consider that there are sixty million peer-to-peer network users in the US, more people than voted for George Bush in 2000. The problem is then how to get all the p2p users to become politically active.
And how many of them cannot vote because they are too young?
During the good old days when I was running OS/2 I installed a shareware application. Installed perfectly. Went away from the computer to watch TV. Suddenly I heard a fanfare. Thought it came from the TV. After a while again. Turned out it was the shareware (nagware?) application playing a fanfare now and then while unregistered.
I use both. The eclipse development environment got this feature WELL after the dot net betas had it. However, I think they both cloned it from NetBeans...
I remeber seeing this feature in Jcreator, although I can't remeber which version started it. The current (3.0) has an option to put to-do.
I don't know how it is in more diverse places, but it often seems like I'm the only gay man majoring in Computer Science, and I remember years ago it was such a relief to find that arguably the most recognized name in the field was gay.
Relax, there are far more gays in CS than you would think. I also at one time thought I was the only one. How wrong I turned out to be:)
Once you're moving tons of material to orbit for a very small price (costs more to ship something across the ocean!), it seems like space exploration is ready to take off (no pun inte... oh, who am I kidding?) in a very real way.
Just think of all the cool debris that will be there when nearly anyone can move their stuff up in orbit. Makes life in the fast lane a bit more intresting.
Hey, news flash for you Billy boy! In Europe, you comply with European law, and it's a lot harder to buy a few politicians to exert political pressure on the justice system.
Yeah, here you just have to married a MEP in order to get your laws passed.

Other hardware, like the Stargates (also from Crossbow) run an arm version of debian.
I knew it wasn't science fiction!

we lose out on interesting ideas and concepts because they may offend someone. it happens in all levels of education, in business, everywhere.
Thats ok, the rest of the world can always move on.
Don't forget the slashdot dupes.
...doesn't smell, it talks. It may even sing and dance if you let it.
We slammed it into the Utah desert floor, but at less than 200 miles per hour so it's probably okay.
Actually they tried to hit SCO but missed.
No one seems to be talking about Trillian (or maybe I missed something) which binds together msn, ircq, yahoo and irc.

Does applying the hack void the warranty?
It was a leaked training simulator for the special forces...

G.R.A.I.L.I.N.Y.O.U ?
I think the aborigines will object to associate such evil with their holy place.
I think in the future wars will go something like this:
..
1) Let invaders come
2) Wait some time for things to cool down
3) Start guerilla warfare
4)
5) Victory (no, not profit)

What is Worldwide Internet Enforcement?
So there would also be a G-spot then? Oh wait...
If you were CEO of a corporation , would you be willing to take out a license from SCO now?
With a strict confidentiality clause, why not? I'm not advocating that, but it at least seems possible.
And you really think they will honor that agreement?

What was wrong with naming it Rupert?
Take away their supercomputers and the government won't stop research, they'll just return to blowing up actual bombs.
Maybe they can test them at SCO after that?
