    This is definitely an excellent product with either nslu2-linux or Debian on it. The disadvantage of Debian is that it doesn't support the integrated LAN port -- you will have to supply a USB network card. ($30 or less)

    Not true. With the big endian OpenDebianSlug, you can use the openslug kernel together with all the packages out of the Debonaras repository (which is growing every day) *AND* the onboard ethernet.

    It's just that big endian Debian for ARM (ARCH=armeb) isn't a official Debian architecture - yet.

    Most do FTP, some do SSH. Watch out for overheating and buggy Samba installations.

    All do FTP, SSH, Samba, HTTP, VPN, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, Routing, Bridging and what-have-you if you install Debian on them... :)

    Also, the devices themselves are totally silent, so if you get a near-silent harddisc enclosure you won't hear them, either...

    (Okay, maybe "playing DVDs" or "doing heavy-duty audio-work" isn't an option... but with an USB sound card you could even use them as audio players... ;))

    That's strange - it took less than a week to get one here in Austria a few weeks ago...

    Then again, an ASUS WL-500G Deluxe might also be interesting; it's only got 4 MB of flash and just a 200 MHz CPU (as oposed to the NSLU2's 266MHz CPU once you de-underclock it), but it's also got a 4-port switch and wireless access point in addition to 2 USB 2.0 ports, and you can run OpenWRT on it

    Well, at those prices getting both is definitely an option... :)

    ctrl+tab behaves different from alt+tab - alt+tab in windows orders by history, while ctrl+tab orders by left-right order. So, there's no "last tab I used" command in FF. It's hard to get a balance here tho - windows accomplishes the odering visibly by showing a pop-up of the program-tabbing history so you can see the order you cycle through.

    Stack Style Tabs fixes that. :)

    Am I the only person who thinks that taking a 10 million clock cycles or more for a dual core chip to respond to an interupt seems like a long time?

    What 10 million?

    5 usec (that's micro-seconds[1], not milli-seconds) is 1/20,000th of a second, so if you take a 2 GHz CPU it's more like 2,000,000,000 clock cycles * sec^-1 divided by 20,000 sec^-1=100,000 clock cycles...

    [1] which should have a mu instead of an u before the second, but SlashDot doesn't seem want to display µ...

    Because the printable version automatically redirects to the normal one if the referred is not extremetech.com

    Also, the printable version is missing all the benchmark diagrams... :/

    Yes. Then again, if you read my previous reply carefully I just responded to the parent poster's claim that ~133DPI was the limit.

    still, the best monitor available right now can do 133 DPI, if I'm up to date.


    With subpixel anti-aliasing (i.e. ClearType et al) on a TFT display you practically get three times the resolution horizontally (you still need 3 adjacent subpixels per black dot, but it can be positioned more accurately), which helps quite a bit...

    Germans which are interested in it may also buy the latest computermagazine c't where it is described in detail.

    Moreover, they were also the ones that discovered this, like the article in The Register states in it's first sentence - if it weren't like that, I'd have found it strange at least, as the issue of c't detailing this already came out on the 30th of May...

    Actually - no, he doesn't.

    Nobody's stopping him from ordering it on DVD from sites like DVD Pacific and importing them into Poland, same as the rest of the EU.

    Just because the DVD isn't sold in stores around him doesn't mean he can't order it elsewhere.

    Well, as long as Kompakt doesn't exist the same way I can live with that... :)

    Not just on Bleep...

    Kompakt is one of the bigger indipendent distributors (and a kickass label) in Germany, and has recently started selling 320kbps MP3 files with no DRM attached.
