It seems like being a smooth talker is more important than practicing effective medicine. But I guess witch doctors have known that all along -- they don't ever seem to get sued.
I think this is very true. I have noticed that just talking to the family and being very clear and kind about just how bad things are going always seems to not only clear the air, but makes everything not seem bad or a mistake, but life and that it ends.
The parent poster is quite correct in that a smooth talker really will have less problems, which tells me that people skills are becoming more important in managing patients than medical skills because the diagnostic part of medicine is really become a no brainer. Ie if you think it could be something, do the test, dont try to wieght your options, since it simply makes no sense in this day and age, to be sensable since malpractive simply has gone insane
I read the fine article and I have to say. The interesting thing to note is the change in tone. This guy, while I dis-agree with what he says, is saying it in measured tone. No longer is MS just saying this stuff is lousy and we wont demean ourselves to play on the same level of linux, but that linux is now being looked at as a real competitier that customers understand is a real alternaitve and now MS is attacking linux in a mesured way the way they attack other competitors (other than stomping them with their monopoly)
Anyway, Iw ould like to hear waht you think of the tone of this article
The real question is: Will Linus adopt it? I remember a hell of a flame war on the use of bitkeeper which has a license that says if you bitkeep to make a product to compete against bitkeeper, you cant use it (I thought that was fair), and it caused quite a ruckus in many camps.
There is a good summary of what happened here http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kerne l/0304.2/0825.html
He just doesn't like technology. Like you can't figure that out from reading his books. Sheesh.
All Tomorrow's Partys(A lou reed, velvet underground song) he is quite clear in how something quite extraordinary and beautiful happened with the virtual 'star' that suddely appears in 100 different places each setting out on a new life. He's quite clear this could not happened without tech and perhaps it is Tech's reason for existance.
And what I wish Pattern Recognition was going to be about was the take over of the corporation. I think Gibson's real contribution in his neuromancer trilogy was the complete and utterly believeable and scary description of the "Corporation as the World".
When I re-read his stuff I am most impressed and awed by how clearly he was able to create a world in which the corporations ran everything and were god-like beings. I know this isnt new now but back in the 80's when Governments were the big powerhouses, saying that someone like Nike was more powerful than the US (say someone like Halliburton) was a bit of shock since we were seeing the US and Russia go at it from Gov't run models of economies.
Anyway, just pick up his early books and you can taste the corporations presence everywhere and how so soaked into the culture that no one is his books ever saw it.
Anyway, getting back to his more recent books, I miss the fact that he no longer seems to be fascinated by the corporations (his fascination with AI's was most explicit [ie the AI, as a real being, representing/being the corporation]) and he now is more of a Tipping Point type writer (much like Crichton, ie spot a trend and write about it )
Anyway, just my thought, would like to hear your replies
but at freenode [freenode.net] a guy said he downloaded the source in one of his company computers and on the other day the admin/root got an e-mail from Microsoft with a warning and the IP which did the illegal download.
As one have already said here, the best thing to do is to stay away from that file.
I have to say I am really would Not/And-Be very surprised if this warning email were true. I think we can bet the NSA is all over this one (althought they probably have the source code already and work with microsoft to secure it), and that they can in fact screen all transmisssions, so it wouldnt be that hard to triangulate (if you will) where it started or where it seems to be coming from and bust them.
Perhaps we are going to see some under-the-radar techniques come out in this hunt that will leave some of us wondering what exactly *they* dont know.
I wonder if I'be been tagged for typing in 'download microsoft source code' on google, but interestingly enough Google, seems to have complete screened all such hits out. Has anyone noticed this?
Anyway, we are talking a lot of money here, so for now, just help linux or any of the *BSD's get better as this is the only way to really fight this war
But it still doesnt make sense, if openoffice is OPEN(Im not sure if gnu open) and it seems openOffice seems to be pretty standards based than why would it matter if IBM and Sun don't like each other?
Think about it, up until now it was courier but now it is times New ROMAN. This fits with the new view of the US as the Roman empire and sends a subtle but unmistakable message to everyone exactly how the US is to be addressed and in what way. Dont think that the word courier was originally french has nothing to do with it.
I have to say AI is a nice group but have no sense of reality. years ago when Peru was fighting their civl war, AI made a point of saying how the Peruvian Gov't was violating civil rights in fighting that very dirty war, but NOT once did they point out that the guerrilla (i wont label them terrorists since they had a clean political agenda, albiet radical implementation) were toturing the peasants and blowing up civilians in that war.
Since that happened, I've lost respect fot AI and have always found them suspect, like I do Limousine liberals.
I dont know about you, but I am not surprised that some of the Original Star Trek technology is around now, ie Communicator = Cell Phone But now we are doing some Voyager stuff, ie polymer memory, although I think voyager had some sort of Biopolymer memory, but still, im secretly pleased by these turn of events
I have been working on getting the HP pavilion ze5385us working and the 2.6 test kernel up until now did not have the synaptics touch stuff working. Now they do
see my site mung.net for more details on getting linux (debian esp) to work on the laptop
AND
here is a link to the site that provides binarys and source to get teh synaptics mousepad to work (this mousepa is found on most recent laptops). this is the documentation from the kernel
Say Y here if you have a Synaptics TouchPad connected to your system. This touchpad is found on many modern laptop computers.
Note that you also need a user space driver to interpret the data generated by the kernel. A compatible driver for XFree86 is available from http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/index. html
I am curious as to how people are really going to react. only 260? That's doesnt seem to enough to cause critical mass and that may be RIAA strategy. Dont overdue it, becuase it will come back. Of course, i could be wrong since it seems that a senator is starting to ask questions about the RIAA's right to by-pass law.

Its not the spammers! It's probably someone out to eventually make every computer a 'trusted computer' The last thing spammers want to do is lose their ability to spam. If this virus is really intended to help spammers, then it will be in short order that we will al be oredered to use a trusted computer platform( cough* microsoft*cough) and that will be pretty be the end to any sort of freedomes that the net enjoyed in its early and its glory years.
but isnt this what trusted computing is all about. I wrote a post a little ago saying that Microsoft was going to use the excuse of virus and their inability to write secure software as an excuse to grant them power over all computers they have the OS on.
In short, what they are saying is because we cant write secure software, we want total control of the software so that no one can use it in anyway that is not approved by us.
Therefore now when I dont want to use Windows or even a patch windows, my computer is considered "untrustworthy" and maybe my ISP will block it.
I think we have to be very very very cafeful in where this war on terrorism, war on computer viruses, war on everying is going ot go.
I can see someone in power tell linux to do *this*, install that or we want let you on the internet. I am surprised at how very little freedom is left on the internet and we all need to watch carefully and pipe up with the time comes.
Sorry for the rabble rosuing rant but I had too much coffe
There a number of reasons why Debian still *is* the superior linux distribution. religion flame war? nope. Just facts. Asid from Red Hat which is in the business of big honking big Iron servers,

Wow!, The web site was slashdotted before it even existed.
Actually, For everyone who thinks this is good thing for linux, think again.
What if Microsoft says "See what happens when we don't control everyone's access to computers. THIS IS WHY WE NEEDS TRUSTED COMPUTING!"
