    Its interesting in that it seems commercial speech is that which wants to influence how to spend your money, which is different than free speech in which it doesnt. If political speech is about influencing where money goes (you money in a general sense), then is political speech really free?

    That is to say that if politics is all really about deciding where money goes and what it does, the what exactly is ever said that isn't in the end about money? If this is the case, is any speech really free?

    But what happends when Linux's ease-of-use GUI gets so developed (the more and more popular it becomes) that we eventually end with the same problem of MCSE?
    ie, know what button to click to fix it, but not why

    If this is true than I think we have the killer app for broadband.
    Getting all that 1950's music in the public domain, can you believe the amount of P2P bandwidth that would be consumed.
    Perhaps this will save ISP's, provide infrastructure, and get paid for it, while we trade free things over it.

    I keep hearing and reading stories of Indian taking leap after technological leap (even if its just attempted leaps). First the leaped in the future of programming, then linux (the open source initiative that pretty much may have kicked Microsoft in the balls) and now this network leap.

    Has India reached some sort of critical mass that the US hasnt reached? I know they are supposed to be a poor country but hell, it feels like they are just about to leap frog over everyone in the next couplt of months. :)

    I just read the article and it states that this lady worked as a Product Marketing directory. She markets a product. She got paid 100K for this. The article calls this a highly skilled job!?!?!?

    Are they nuts?

    Writing good code is a high skill. Repairing engines is good diagnostic and repair skills. being a doctor 'saving' lives is a high skill.

    Marketing a product is not a high skill. It is a knack with no theoretical underpinnings that would require a high level of symbolic manipulation in order do a job.

    But some people paid her 100K and now she wonders why she cant find someone else to pay her 100K for ajob that any college grad with an english degree could do. This is not highly skilled. English degress are not a sign of any high skill. It is a fundamental on which other things are built on it.

    Actually, Initially I agreed with your comment but then I realized that actually may be the direction we are heading, in that programming will become a part of what you but all you do.
    Especially if you are programming to do things, then just like in the academic field where physics, biologists, chemists are expected to know how to program because that is where a lot of research is being done, I think likewise in the healthfield you are getting more doctors how are designing the medical software because they know what is needed to get things done and not have it mediated by a programming team that has not a clue on the real intent of the product code.

    Anyway, thanks for the interesting post and hope to hear some replies

    Of all the comments, the one thing that seems to be underlying all of this is that he has to PAY to PLAY. It seems the writer of the article wouldnt mind the 100+ hour auto-fights, if he didnt have to pay.

    Given how many people are playing this, would make an opensource replica work in this case.
    The costs could certainly be lower and the response times would increase.
    what do you think?

    Because the floodgates of jobs that are going to India are just going to get wider and anyone with half a clue is going to realize that they are going to be computer against a huge nation with as much a talent pool to draw from as they US has, esp when it comes to tech

    This seems to directly address the complaint that new users won't have a conceptual base to start on linux. While this is a good idea, I still think that new users should get some sort of introduction to the open source and its ideals. I know I know that users simply want to use the computer for work, but as we head off into this new digital age where everything can be controlled, perhaps they should also learn that switching from windows to linux, means that they are the ones in control and not business.

    Look it up.
    DO a search on supreme court ruling a parody and you will see there have been recent cases in the last 20 years that have protected parody.

    The most blatant example of how protected Parody is, just at look at "the Simpsons"

    DO you really think that they got the permission do use all the character they feature and make jokes about? No way. They are doing parody and thus dont need to worry about copyright or stepping on anyone's toes

    What I seem to not understand is how Canada which always seemed to a good bastion of personal liberty has suddenly gone willing servant of DRM?

    Any ideas?
    I mean that explain why this DRM fiasco is taking so much root in a pretty liberal country?

    Althought I agree that MS probably would not want to open source, I think that seeing that OS2 was possible on low speed machines would make want to see the code even more and this would be one one valid reason to open source. I think we could some really good code techniques if they open sourced it.

    But no one is talking about publishing a braile version of the new york times.
    I am talking abut the the blind person using what he can to read the new york times, ie he has something that will convert the nytimes to braile so he can read it, then he should be allowed to do so.

    Why isnt anyone really stating that this is about a blind person's ability to read the book they bought.

    While the seller doesnt have to guarantee that his books can be read by the blind, the seller cant keep the blind from reading the book, ie using the software to 'open' the book and let him read it.

    I would like to hear a valid argument against this statement?

    just a reply, but in ADHD, rilalin is used as a stimulant to increase concentration, it is sort of paradoxical but that is what ritalin is doing, not slowly them down, but increasing mental acuity
    Provigil is being widely used in ADHD because it has been shown to work better with less side effects.

    Anyway, Im gald you have had some good effects with provigil. I plan to use it on some of my patients.

    There is new med out there. You daughter is probably on ritalin.
    It is called provigil and apparent is doing wonders in the for kids as it is not a stimulant but an awake-promiting agent.
    I read about them. They were given to guld war pilots so they could fly 48 hours with no sleep deficits. It initally was used to sleep apnea patient that felt tired all day. They were the med and felt much more awake during the day, even though they were not sleeping better.

    Anyway, give it a thought

    Did they attempt this in the 90's. I remember in chicago go to Pier One and playing the BattleTech Mech games. Expensive but fun as hell.
    I also remember they went out of business as soon as the pc had a good cable connection and mechwarrior2 came out. What do they think is different now?

    Just wondering, if Linux already runs on 64bit, which I think it does, and I have not heard of microsoft having anything ready for this market, does this mean that just as gamer's buying games pushed the video card (and in my opinion, the os) market, will we see linux be increasing adopted since it will run 64bit and MS does not?

    Actually, busniess accounts arent as good as home accounts. I recently tried to get business account because the home accounts were being issued where I live. They told me that they rather not sell a business account to a home, because business tend to use less bandwidth then homes and the cost is more email and serving business pages and not downloading mp3's and movies. Hence if you want more bandwidth stick with home account. strange eh

    acutally, what I am saying is that there a defintely connection between having heart surgery done and the patient suffering decreased congitive abilities. The report (i dont which but it is there, its been mentioned in big newspapers also) states that they are not sure if it heart bypass machine or cooling but is defintely there and I am pointing out that if they are going to make heart surgery even longer that this might make the mental side-effects even worse.
