There was a recent article in the JAMA which reported that there was a decrease in cognitive ability in people how had major cardiac surgery. They thought it might be due to the time spent on the heart-bypass machine or that time spent with the body cooled might be affect the brain in some unknown way yet. Thuse when reading this article and it stating that the surgery takes much longer but the hospital stays are shorter might in fact be hiding the fact that the rate of cognitive damage might go up and not be detected until months afterwards.
Hi all, im surprised that slashdot didnt post this sooner but the bill for the Homeland Security carried a provision to make every transaction 1. credit card 2. phone call 3. email 4. vacation 5. any bought
go into a massive database. From what I understand this has now passed into law! The funny part is that the sponsor of this part of the bill is the same dude who master-minded the iran-contra affair.
Anyway, what's funny is that there was a small outcry in the nytimes "You are suspect" you can read it here http://www.nytimes.com/2002/11/14/opinion/14 SAFI.h tml
anyway, I'm surprised no one else has mentioned. Perhaps it was one of those 'They couldn't, could they?" reactions to the whole idea that know paid serious mind to it and now its law.
You know, dropping the initial 1. or 2. seems like a marketing thing since the point release like 20 or 21 then give the impression (true or false) that emacs is 21.* or something,
I havent criticized slashdot that much but there is a trend that I have seen now of people asking legal questions and wondering what to do about it.
Of course as others have pointed out above that THEY NEED TO SEE A LAWYER, but I'm afraid that the person posting the question for slashdot might recieve an answer that they go with and not seek a lawyer since slashdot, despite itself, does get some extremely good and cogent posts.
I suggest that in the future slashdot start hosting a legal section in which they post the results of legal work done on the questions that get asking in slashdot
At work, we've been trying to switch over from using exchange but a lot of people have implemented some very neat features, like for instance. If I have an appointment to do a stress test on a patient, the nurses send an email so that it is loaded onto my palm pilot when i sync and a letter is automatically printed out letting the patient know when the test is scheduled.
The IT guys think they may have found an exchange server replacemetn with SUSE but for now exhcnage is very useful and would be very hard to replace.
The question that I keep saying raised and being answered (not the favor of home users) is what happens when bandwidth becomes more and more available and the end-user starts getting charged for it.
Here where I live, I've been asking business to consider installing a wap11 to allow customers surf while they have a cup of coffee, but all of them have refused because they fear the increased costs. At home, if I tried to set up my own wap11 for use outside my house, and let a few people start using, what would be bills be? I wouldnt mind paying a little more, but I keep reading the the cost of bandwidth is really going to start to get expensice so that ISP's can make their money ( no problem with that)
Once I moved over to linux I missed Quicken but then I found GnuCash which is very easy to use but also has a very different view on how to track money. GnuCash tracks money the way businesses track money. It is always a matter of where money came from and goes to. It makes you think about where your money is going.
I cant recommened it enought, check it out at www.gnucash.org
In short, you can use it from home checking to runing your office, which is what I do!
I dont know about you, but I think I am going to try to get my hands on one of there, (ie, but one).
I am going to watch this closely becuase I think here we have a real test to see what happens when linux has a product that people can buy and cant simply download.
If they do well, I think we should use them as a example of how things really are going to go for linux.
You actually seem to suggest a way to evalute films.:) What I mean is that you seem to say that we might judge movies, say how good they are, by determing whther one could take scenes out and make it a better movie or not?
ie say in the The Phantom Menace, taking out Jar Jar Binks would make it much more palatable movie, but Try taking something out of ClickWork Orange and you harm the whole film immeasurably.
I know this aint exactly on the radar of geeks, but the question becomes if comsumers can change the content of the movie, what happens to the Director's Intent. What I mean is we all know of movies that seemed to suck when they first came out, but then everyone finally caught up withe Director's ideas in the movie and becomes a classic.
Will this make Director just slap shit together and tell consumers to maek it better?
What if a Director doesnt want You changeing his movie because he has an exact reason for every scene but you still change it? Are you still watching the same movie the Director made?
No knock against smaller cities but I think the need to move out becuase of higher costs will out wighed by the need to have good sushi, and good new movies.
I don't know if you have read the book Snow Crash, but there is a very interesting part of it where, one of the women characters is the only that gets interested in the "GUI" part of a program, but the writer points out that this was the hardest part of the program and the one part that stood out from the rest of this ceratin program that all the guys were working on.
Anyway, I think i just explained it very badly, but you should read the book and see what you think.
but why does moveing a lot of bandwidth cost more than moving a little bandwith, (and dont include support). Im just trying to pin why the cost of bandwidth itself
btw, good reply with we need to generate electricity. Makes sense. But then does it take more energy to move more bandwidth?
I understand that that the hardware costs money, and the support tech tema costs money,
but what exactly about using a lot of bandwidht makes it more expenseice once the inital infrastrucire is set?
What i am asking is, what makes it more expensive for me to download 100GB instead of 1MB?
Thanks!
ban all the tech corporations from doing any kind of software/hardware that could violate on any way copyrights.
content corporations would change based with donations system) but with music and movies.
I have to say that these two exit strategy are extremely limited. ie that is to say that
1. Copyright is not going to go away
2. I my self would not want to be paid based on 'donantions
So the question is what would be another way?
I keep thinking that we might have a paypal system (dont flame yet) in which what we buy would be screened from those we buy from. That is to say, like credit cards but you could trace it back to the buyee and the price would be very small, such that while any one thing to buy would not cost much, Im talking pennies, if whole pennies, but that the coporations would make money on each song that is heard. ah heck I dont know

Linux journal just did an article where the guy talks about using CVS to track all changes on his computer

You know what is interesting aout you reply?
:)

You're right, but Im thinking about real Directors, like Kubrick, who knew exactly what they were doing, even if the audience didnt.
I know this aint exactly on the radar of geeks, but the question becomes if comsumers can change the content of the movie, what happens to the Director's Intent. Go to http:://www.paypalwarning.com
for more info paypal badness
I have recently become aware of paypalwarning.com which has made me seriously consider doing business with paypal.com?
Would they be affect by this?
well, baltimore is not exactly what I would consider a small city? But is it in-expensive?
No knock against smaller cities but I think the need to move out becuase of higher costs will out wighed by the need to have good sushi, and good new movies.
Just surious, but how are the Irish doing in these tech times?
thanks

Hi,
.NET is well thought out and designed?
Could you explain why
Thanks!
Ok, that makes sense,
but why does moveing a lot of bandwidth cost more than moving a little bandwith, (and dont include support). Im just trying to pin why the cost of bandwidth itself
btw, good reply with we need to generate electricity. Makes sense. But then does it take more energy to move more bandwidth?
That still does not answer my question
Why Does Bandwidth In and Of Itself Cost money?
im not playing dumb, I simply dont understand
How bandwidth, itself, costs money?
I understand about support and hardware, but the the electrons themselves costing money?
please explain
thanks!
I understand that that the hardware costs money, and the support tech tema costs money,

Hey, Thanks for the reply
i only see 2 emergency exits:
ban all the tech corporations from doing any kind of software/hardware that could violate on any way copyrights.

fair enough.
Our ideas that We have a Right to listen or see anything, may change.
Huh? Who the hell has that idea now?
Well, duh, obviously a whole hell lot of people think so, Does Napster ring a bell?
And what You and I are going to pay for is access to what this Mind (the artist) creates.
How is that different than it is now?
Because right now most people think they are buy something material and not the music object, per se
