    Why did I upgrade from Win8.1 to Win10? I was doing something and clicked a window, but the window changed from "do you want to do this thing you want to do" to "do you want to upgrade to Win10". It was my only computer, I couldn't google to see the ramifications of aborting the "upgrade", so I let it "upgrade"

    Chillen, don't run win10. It may be the most secure, for various definitions of secure (e.g. telemetry), but it sure as shit ain't the most stable. Worst of all, M$ will decide when your machine reboots. They don't need for you to say "um, yep, this is a good time to reboot", nor "um, no, give me time to save my files and shutdown". Nope, you will close your laptop, go to bed, and wake up to a rebooted system.

    The solution isn't in the debt ceiling. We need to tell Congress "NO! You cannot spend more money without paying off your existing debt! Fuckwits".

    That will never happen. sad. Hoping I'll be dead before the cows come home to roost, it'll be close (10 years).

    Quit using my real name some 20 years ago. One email account is for real mail, closely guarded. The other is for everything else.

    I get 2-3 messages a week in my real email, and 10-20 a day in the other one. I read maybe 2-3 of them.

Long docs via email are fine (I play online games via email), but most of my email nowdays are retailers who think they have a relationship with me but I never look at them unless I need to buy underwear and want a discount. Voicemail? Fuck off. Yeah, I can have android do email to text with hilariously bad results. Fact is, you leave me a voice mail and I pretty much ignore you unless I recognize the sender. Voice mail for me. Long, drawn out voice taking a good minute telling my phone tree options.. I enter my phone number. Long, drawn out voice. I enter my code. Long, drawn out message, I enter my code again. Long, drawn out message, I hit 1 for play. Long, drawn out rambling message from some dipshit asking a stupid question. I tell them they're a dipshit. Long drawn out message saying my mailbox has 2 more messages. Repeat 2 more times. Long drawn out message, my mailbox is mt.

    Text version? Get a text. It's a stupid question. Might also say why in 142 characters.Delete, or answer, whatever. Problem solved in seconds instead of minutes.

    Voicemail used to be great, now it's the refuge of people who can't condense their thought in less than 30 seconds.

    No college degree, self taught Z80 assembler. Long story short, marketing found out I wrote space invaders for an 8080 based 1553 bus protocol analyzer. Took it to trade shows. Management found out, took me from tech to engineer. As an engineer I wrote code for various hardware. The rule was, when a bug came in you had to fix it. No matter how long ago it was, you owned it.

    Quickly learned how to write good code that I could understand a year after release.

    There is a bill in the lower intestine of the government to no longer switch to DST, with luck it will be on the ballot in November. From what I've heard not only in forums but talking to people, everybody hates it. The older I get the longer it takes me to adjust. In my 30s I was WTF is the big deal. In my late 50's it's "oh god, not this shit again".

    Reading the manual I need to install Python using pip. Never heard of pip. Google says it's a Python package manager. Whee.

    Subtly seldom works here. I have to install Python to get a thingie I need to install Python. If this isn't a Whiskey Tango Foxtrot moment I don't know what is.

    The whole set of instructions for installing/running this tool are dead on arrival for 99% of /. readers, let alone the general population.

    Yeah, Intel has "secure boot" firmware in their CPUs that provide something called UEFI. They don't release the source code. If compromised it's even worse than a root kit. Do I need to mention the NSA/CIA/KGB/Chinese/Random hacker group has a 50/50 chance of already hacking it?

    Link leads to github, which I've never used. Reading the manual I need to install Python using pip. Never heard of pip. Google says it's a Python package manager. Whee.

    Then I have to compile some C programs. OK.

    Then I have to shutdown my system using funny flags I've never seen before. Before doing this I hope I've printed out a few pages of the manual, because the next few steps are wat do when the system won't boot.

    Then I can run it.

    OK, I'm technically competent. I'm kinda surprised I've had this laptop for 2 years and have yet to install Python. Oh well, not a problem. I've also got a C development system, that's easy enough. And I'm smart enough to print out the 2-3 pages of important info before shutting down my system in a funky way.

    So yeah, I can install and run this. But how about grandma? She has no chance. Besides the fact she's been dead for 10 years or so, she would never be able to figure this stuff out.

    What we need is a .msi file we can install that, when run, says yay or nay that the CIA/NSA/KGB/Chinese/whomever has infected your firmware.

    Not web nor cloud based. You make a master password, it stores a file on your hard drive containing your encrypted stuff. You can move that file anywhere and, if keypass is installed, get your passwords on that platform.
