Are you serious? I mean, I am no Microsoft or Windows lover, but Linux is no alternative to Windows for Joe and Jane Average Computer user. Using my parents as a gauge (because I consider them pretty average computer users), having them using Linux as an OS would make zero sense. They are much more familiar with Windows products. They don't have to jump through hoops to send out documents that would be compatible with everyone else they communicate with (or to read the documents they get). They understand how to navigate the OS. Basically, the interface is a known to them.
Windows continues to dominate the market from past domination. Plus the fact that most any computer you can buy comes with the latest version of Windows. And because most users are familiar with their older products, they stick with what they know.
Of course they didn't look. That is what AskSlashdot is for - not thinking/not doing.
Heck, I was looking for just a similar beast for one of my computers last night and I found a bunch of sub $50 that will do just what he was looking for. It isn't that hard, why is this even a question?!?!?!
I agree with this. Be happy. Now granted, if a top tier college will make you happy, then go for it.
Also realize, that if you are currently a HS senior, that means you are about 2/3 done w/ classes for this year. Yea, you are very right when you say you fear it is too late, because it probably is.
I would not sweat it. CM is a quality school that will give you a good education.
RonB Good luck with college and the remaining admissions process
Now that being said, we shall see. I will admit, the real key is what is coming out for each console in the near and far future. Right now I own a 360 and Wii. The Wii gets more of my time because the games are much more interesting. After I finished my latest batch of games on the 360 (Gears of War and Dead Rising), I really find it collecting dust right now. I just don't see any great, gotta have 'em titles out there for the 360 right now. Same for the PS3.
Now in the future, if either can get those titles, then it will be interesting to see how things turn out. I also think with the Wii selling like hotcakes, Nintendo will also start to see titles made for them.
I think ultimately it is way to early to call anything in this console war. Let's wait for some of the big titles to get out there for each system and then how sales do.
The government won't do anything without someone wanting them to take action. If someone wanted to bring up a case against Microsoft, they are free to do so. And if they have valid claims, they should be able to win (granted they have good representation).
Geez, this isn't some global conspiracy out to line the coffers of Microsoft, this is business 101.
You do hit the nail on the head. I have always wondered why people were against.xxx , it always seemed like a win-win solution that helped all parties. For the site owners, it allowed them to be pretty easy to find, AND they pretty much could run their site without any sort of fear that people would be going to it by mistake (ie, display anything you want). As far as the "think of the children" crowd, it would be easy, cut off.xxx and you are done with your filtering. Now clearly, you would have stuff slip through (rogue sites that don't move from.com to.xxx), but I think it would be a really good start.
Just because you don't read the contract doesn't mean they are not real. I mean, I may not read every word on a loan application, but if I sign it, you better believe that I am on the hook for the consequences if I don't pay the loan.
Enforceability? There are cases that go both ways on that. I would not use that as something to stand on, if I am facing the prospect of legal action.
IMHO, I don't get a package like glider, because what is the point of paying for a game to allow the computer to play by itself.
And I would also agree, cheating by players, is something that keeps me away from games, like WOW (which I have also avoided for it's crack-like consistency).
Maybe I am wrong, but IMHO, you are confusing the two.
Free will is something we do have. We have the ability to make choices. It is assumed that God knows our choices already, but that doesn't mean he has determined them, only that he knows the choices we are going to make. So, IMHO, that still means we have the right to choose.
If it is argued that the Bible is the word of God, and as such, free will is not necessary in it's writing.
I will never buy a product* where the author gets to decide if I can use it. This is DRM times infinity, it's the most retarded idea the software industry has ever come up with. Then perhaps software is not for you, because most EULA's pretty much have just that in them. Now granted, if you physically possess the disks, it is a lot harder to enforce that, but I am just saying.
One thing to consider is the effects of a distribution model such as Steam. While it does have DRM (something that is necessary if you are making your stuff available on the net), it also allows for a company like Valve to get away from needing a big publishing/distribution company to make their software available to people. It also puts more money in their hands as opposed to a publisher getting in on the action. I mean, why not do more to support the programmers instead of box movers?
Just a thought. And this isn't to say that Valve is clear of publishers. They are currently working with (the evil) EA to publish their current line.
You make this sound like a bad thing. I mean, if we are talking a convicted sex offender, should a longer 2nd stay in prison be a good idea?
I agree with the unenforceable aspect of this law more than anything though. I just don't see how this could be done. Perhaps monitoring all internet activity off their computer? Got me.
Actually, exactly what does anyone see as a fully negative effect of this? Didn't Slashdot recently cover a case of a rapist that got away with it because the law didn't explicitly name instant messaging in the communication? Maybe I am missing something.
I agree that there is some level responsibility of the site operators. I think your bank example is a really good one. But at the same time, just because the bank made a mistake, doesn't mean that the burglar who robbed the bank can get off scott-free.
WTF are you talking about? This guy wrote is worm. He didn't disclose any sort of vulnerability. Unless by disclose, you mean he exploited it. That is like saying a guy who writes a Windows virus that wipes out millions of hard drives world wide is not at fault, Microsoft it for leaving that vulnerability in there.
Look, this is like tons of other cases, Gary McKinnon, Adrien Lamo and others. If you are breaking a rule or the law, do not expect leniency, regardless if you meant good or ill. Claiming that you were doing it just to demonstrate something is not a defense. If that is the case a valid breaking and entering excuse would be "I was just showing these people their locks didn't work".
IMHO, they have really shown nothing as a reputable registrar, EVER. Their commercials were pure shock value and nothing more. IMHO, I think that picking someone like Network Solutions etc is a better way to go.
GoDaddy hit fast and hard, but IMHO, were always a 2 bit company. I would have never used them to register a domain.
This is my biggest problem w/ people posting their own works. Because while maybe they have some good stuff to contribute, I know they are really just looking for people to get clicks on their page.
And overall, I think the official release on site or any of the numerous sites that cover this would have done better.
Yes yes! All hail Halo 3!! Greatest game ever!! Halo 3 will rule the Cosmos!!!
Come on, the game hasn't even seen the light of day yet. And it will probably just look like H1 and H2. I say reserve judgement when it comes out.
As far as Crackdown - the review is pretty spot on. Brainless but fun. I played way too much this weekend.

If ... If ... if....
I think you have a lot of if's in there.

I would have to agree here. Maybe reading the whole article would help this make sense, but IMHO, the summary does not.

Woa woa woa. Don't bring your facts to a debate about the word of God.
But seriously, very good points. I think the problem is that you have this very vocal group that has to be heard, and they all seem to live in Kansas.
