I was loading up on NOVL stock friday on that selloff over Chris Stone leaving.
Thank You Mr. Gates! I now officially forgive you for all the hours I've spent fixing spyware and virus ridden Windows boxes for my friends and family over the last few years (I've been on Linux for 5 years, still can't seem to get away from fixing windows boxes though).
I have used SuSE for several years, along with other distros - Red hat (gee, they cut us end users off though - sorry, no red hat), Gentoo, Slackware, etc...
SuSE is hands down the best distro out there for ease of install, ease of use.
shameless plug? You bet. Any truth behind it? Yes. Try it out. SuSE has some downloads available to try the SuSE 9.2 live cd right now....
I wasn't struck, but it was very close. I was at a park, and a bad thunderstorm hit. I started to run for my truck, which was about 75 yards away across the park, on the other side of a row of trees. When I was about 10 yards from the trees, I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up and stopped - the bolt hit the tree right in front of me. Very loud. The flash was very bright too, I remember seeing the image on my retina for a long time afterwards - 15 minutes or so. I can also agree with Frogbert about the "electrical" smell.
It blew the tree apart, splitting it down the middle. Pieces of the tree exploded in a semi-circle out about 30 yards all around it. One nice chunk got blown right past me, missing me by a foot or two. I picked it up and later carved a walking stick out of it. Sitting in my bedroom now. This was in about 1982. "The Natural" came out a couple of years later. I got a good chuckle out of his bat - carving a bat didn't even occur to me.
Tired of not being able to read the best resource on this whole fiasco.
If you do link, please also link to their paypal account link. Maybe if 1 out of 1000 of you slashdotters who hit groklaw and see it got hosed will go back when it is up and donate a couple bucks, they can add a server or two.
TIA, Dave (BTW, I've donated already, twice)

Uses windows driver, but author claims it works. So, if the ATI graphics chip works, the rest will probably be a no brainer. I checked and Best Buy here in Austin is going to have some of the M6805 eMachines in stock later this week. Just ordered latest knoppix CD (I don't have a CD burner, or have easy access to one) for 5 bucks. I'll try it out this week at Best Buy with the knoppix CD.
Will be running in 32 bit mode, so won't be a good test of the processor, but will suffice to see if the other hardware is recognized under Linux.

Anyone ever run Linux on one of those eMachines M6805 or M6807s? Those are their two new AMD 64 mobile based notebooks.
I'd particularly like to try SuSE 9.0 for AMD 64. Thinking about it as a desktop replacement, might use it for limited travel. Tried the linux on laptops page, nothing.
Nothing comes up on google either. Thinking about getting a recent version of knoppix and hitting Circuit City to try it out... TIA
I'm on my second Kyocera Smart phone. I had the larger, monochrome display 6035. Just bought the color, flip style, smaller 7135 6 months ago. Couldn't live without it. Not much bigger than a standard flip cell phone.
All the palm data stored on pc from the 6035 (large addressbook, memos, shopping lists, etc) uploaded onto the 7135 no problemo. I upgraded a couple of the apps to color versions and they imported the old data fine.
Not cheap (I paid about $500.00), but worth every penny. Sturdy too - I dropped it on the pavement once. Small ding on outside, still works perfect. I have the $5 a month replacement insurance though just in case. I'd hate to have to pony up another $500.00.
I've used yahoo e-mail for 4 years now. I have 2 accounts, a "main" one I forward all my other e-mail accounts to, and a "throw-away" account I use for posting on yahoo finance message boards, and also for instances where an e-mail address is required but don't want extra spam (ex. online shopping).
My experience over-all has been excellent, with on minor exception:
Yahoo! sneaks in yet more spam
YAHOO! GRANTED ITSELF PERMISSION to spam by creating a new "marketing preferences" page that lets users pick "yes or no" to specific categories of marketing pitches. The problem is, Yahoo! set every users' option to "yes" -- even if long ago, they indicated they never wanted any Yahoo! spam.
Yahoo! started e-mailing the privacy policy change to users Thursday. In the notice, the company suggested the marketing policy changes were made for users so they could more easily control the amount of e-mail offers they receive.
"It is designed to make it easier for you to manage the marketing communications you receive from Yahoo! and ensure you get the latest relevant information to meet your needs," the notice says. It also says that marketing preferences have been "reset," and unless users actively follow a sequence of steps to change these preferences "you may begin receiving marketing messages from Yahoo! about ways to enhance your Yahoo! experience, including special offers and new features."
But some Yahoo! users don't see the change as an enhancement, but rather a tactic to trick users into accepting more spam -- and a betrayal of their initial registration agreements.
"I checked and they had changed all my settings!" writes one irate poster to an Internet mailing group devoted to privacy. "This means that you may well be inundated with even more junk mail than you are already receiving. In order to change your settings back to whatever you had them at before, you will need to log in to your account and physically change them," the poster adds.
A Yahoo! spokesperson said no company officials were available to comment on the change, but offered an e-mail statement explaining the company's position.
"We have created a new marketing preferences page which allows users to choose how Yahoo! communicates with them about Yahoo! products and services. Yahoo!'s products and services have changed and grown over the years and many were not available when users registered in the past," the e-mail says. "We are notifying users proactively via e-mail of this change, after which they have 60 days after the date of the mailing to edit those marketing preferences, giving users plenty of time to decide how they want Yahoo! to communicate with them."
This was from a google search on "yahoo marketing preferences", and pretty well sums up what happened.
They basically reset user marketing preferences, twice in about 4 years if I remember correctly.
It was a bad decision IMHO, but easy enough to reset your preferences, here is yahoo's page on privacy, with links to reset your marketing preferences:

Other than this one issue, I've been very happy with Yahoo. Being able to check all my e-mail on one Web site for free is great. Never have lost any e-mails, no problems at all.
Real World Example: This is already affecting my job. I work for a company that is a subsidiary of a fortune 500 company. Our parent company got the warning letter from SCO a few weeks ago. Our company got an edict from our parent company stating that their position currently is "to cease any use of Linux as soon as possible to avoid potential litigation costs".
Our company president has told us to come up with a plan to migrate any Apps ( Web Server is main one, several others though) currently running on Linux to something else.
He first was saying Windows (God, makes my hair stand on end thinking about having to admin Win 2000 and IIS, and use ASP instead of PHP), but cooler heads have prevailed, and worst case is some flavor of Unix now.
Still, this will be a major hassle and expense. So in one respect SCO/Microsoft has already won.
Their FUD is working, and affecting me personally. Will Linux go away? No. Will Linux be around and and growing 5 years from now? I think so. Is corporate America in CYA mode now, and over-reacting in fear - absolutely.
I took this job for several reasons, the primary one was the ability to use open source tools: Linux/Apache/MySQL/Perl/PHP
now, this is threatened.
Our company president has told me if the decision were his alone, he would probably do nothing now, wait it out and see what happens. But, like a lot of corporate america, he doesn't get to make decisions alone, and is being dictated to by our parent company. Large companies like that will look at this, succumb to the obvious FUD, and think the safest path is just to bail on Linux and Open Source.
I work at company that is a subsidiary of a fortune 500 company, and yesterday we were told to develop a migration plan to move everything off of Linux on to Windows. I sh*t you not.
Before we were bought out, our company president would have scoffed at this obvious FUD campaign backed by MS (he still feels this way), but he doesn't set corporate policy now - it comes from our parent company. This may extend to any open source tools we use (linux, perl, apache).
One of the main reasons I took this job was the Linux friendly environment. Now I guess I'll have to dust off the old resume.
Lawsuit reform is really needed in this country ( there should be a financial penalty if you file a lawsuit and lose - at least pay court costs).
My only chance at salvation is a very quick resolution to this.
I am following up to my own post to point out that if you modify the unix.js file as described above, then grab and install a new version of mozilla ( I upgraded from 1.0 to 1.1 this morning),it uninstalls everything - including the unix.js file. So I had to re - edit it to use my win truetype fonts. I also copied it to another dir, so If I forget and install over it again, I'll still have it.
Don't cheap out and tinker with toys, get an Apple and leave your parent's basement once in a while.
LOL!
sorry, must've posted just before me..., didn't see your post.
and, yes, the reviews have been good.

Bitching about companies making profit off of Open Source software is just feeding the negative stereotypes....
Ximian Connector and YAST are just two of their recent gifts. I could make this into a long rant, but I won't.
Just type Novell into google, and read about it.
Climbing off of soapbox now.
I was going to mod you insightful, but this slashdot interface is too complicated to figure out.

There is a paypal link for those that wish to contribute a little something on the home page (once you can get it to load).
Maybe a few $ here and there from slashdot readers, and they can get a more robust setup, and survive the next slashdot link.
No pressure. Just a thought. I've given a little twice. Groklaw is a tremendous resource for those following the SCO/IBM/Redhat/Novell saga. PJ rocks!
Mod points are are always more fun when used in mean-spirited retribution! BWHA HA HA HA HAA HA!

I guess so, duh, shoulda googled first:
SuSE
Does anyone know if SuSE/Novell is pursuing this same certification?
I hope so. Dust off the red daemon suit and get packing! For the few who don't know who Ceren is... nevermind, everyone knows who Ceren is!
