I am sorry but it isn't alwas that easy. I wish it was but it isn't. I upgraded a system from 7.1 to 7.3 with apt-get and there were major issues to get it updated. Now Compared to a manual update it was easy but not as easy as sticking in a redhat CD and installing the update and then running apt-get update / apt-get upgrade afterwards. There are going to be major changes from what I can tell from 8.0 to 9.0 as redhat is using the new threding librarys that will break major thing like when redhat went from GCC 2.96 to 3.x almost all apps based on C++ librarys broke so althought I am not sure that the new threding library are going to break as many apps as the new GCC did but by giving it version 9.0 instead of 8.1 they are saying it will break packages.

that is, per se, a problem with version control. And yes, it is a problem, but it has gotten much better in a windows environment in the past few years.

Don't Disagree with that but Redhat Since 3.03 doesn't have many problems with version control. Its built into RPM and there by default. Most of the problems with Dependance hell is the results of badly writen .rpms that assume certain things about what is or isn't install and linking to library assuming that API wont change between versions both are a mistake on the developer not the package manger.

Also, it is well documented when a file gets overwritten (check technet with your errors), and an experienced tech should have a list in his head (and in a folder) about these things. For example, there are two files that need to be present in order to use both Access 97 and Access 2000 and some registry entries to change; the versions are from Access 97, but how to do it depends on the order you install in. If you dont do it correctly, neither will work. But its really a basic problem once you know.

I agree and it didn't take me long to figuire out what was going on and to make sure I alwas install office 97 1st with its broken installer and then IE after to fix things. Not a problem for me but my day job is Tech Support and how do you explain to someone that there PC stoped working right because they installed a new compont off the Office 97 CD and not a problems with the software I use to support. If windows had bult-in library checkers and other things that both RPMS and Deb have by default alot of the problems custmer have today would never have happen in the 1st place. Windows isn't that unstable if all you run is windows but once you start installing programs then it starts to become unstable.

Definately. I'll just switch to an ISP which doesn't waste money fighting spam, and makes money selling service to spammers.

No what will happen is ISP will just stop offering Email or will cost alot more. There is no such thing as "makes money selling service to spammers" unless you are talking about selling bandwidth.

Also Spam is growing at such a rate that it may require more cost to not fight spam then to fight it. Bigger servers with more processing power just to keep up with processing something that user will call and coplain about and go to the other guy who does better at blocking it.

Yes but they are going to require some form of training. The Artical says they are either going to upgrade to New version of Windows XP or switch to Linux. So we are talking about going from Windows 95 to XP or at least to 2000. Althought 95 looks simalar to 2000 let me tell you as someone who does tech support all day it isn't the same. XP is even worse so there is training involved in upgrading to 2000/XP from 95 as well. The questions is which will cost more and how much more is the training cost to over come the $600 dollar per seat for XP. Plus once they have been trained what are the ongoing cost. Forced Upgrades, requiring new hardware, etc.

Also as someone who does tech support what user want most is for thing to work the same everytime / everyday. Most people outside of the tech industry just wants it to work and work the same. I have seen people use Pine and love it and then be foreced to switch to outlook and hate it because 1) it was a change and 2) it didn't work the same everytime they would use it.

Yes and No. For Apple to continue to sale hardware and software there has to be 3rd party software and hardware manf. They make things that apple couldn't make if it wanted too like drivers for new hardware gadgets and checkbook software like quicken. If there market share falls to low then it can create a spiral of death.

Lets look at an Example of what I am talking about. Five years ago almost all of the Linux drivers were inhouse by the kernel team and were hacks didn't work perfert all the time or didn't have full access to all that the card could do. Now five years later we have more and more drivers created by the manf. themselves and/or specs on the internal that make the driver writen work better and make full use of the cards abilty.

Now as Apple % of market share drops. More manf. aren't going make drivers for Mac's. Leaving Apple to either create more drivers or lose support for more hardware. Either will cose apple $$$. althought the fact that Apple built of a BSD core might help as drivers writen for other Unix based OS could be ported. So as linux and other *ix grow it could make things easier for apple in the long run.

Before you flame me I don't think apple with die anytime soon as there are some markets that PC are just starting to get into and good OS don't die they evolve just ask IBM os/2 still is being used for thing like cash reg. and ATM.
