    As others have pointed out, this is a notorious troll. However, I'm a big Dark Tower fan too and didn't know about this until 2 weeks ago (maybe you haven't seen this either?) It's the prologue to his next Dark Tower book. Sounds like a really cool story too, although like the last one, it won't advance the main plot too much.

    Whoa there cowboy! A little evidence please? And what would you suggest we do with the refugees who face persecution in their homelands (women from Afghanistan, for instance)? Turn them around and send them home? I realize you're upset about what happened on Tuesday, but please keep the hatred away from off-topic subjects.

    This is exactly the kind of post that the more militant types here will ignore because it hurts so much to admit. I'd encourage everyone to linger for a second and reread the above, as it's one of the first I've seen that stresses causes and prevention instead of reaction.

    That's what HE THINKS they believe. And it sounds reasonable to me too. Look how good MP3 has been for digital audio. With the open standard, companies can and have advanced the technology by building better MP3 playing software, ripping software, portable devices with more space, smaller sizes, removable media, etc.

    Now Aldridge comes along and tries to convince us that a closed standard is the best way to do it.

    Right.

    Maybe so, but how many legitimate alternatives existed then compared to now? How many users and story submissions? Hell, how many open source projects then compared to now? So what if Slashdot doesn't scale well, there's still plenty of good stories, insightful comments and knowledgable posters, even some with (*gasp*) high reg numbers! I don't know if you read the article, but the writer was on a bitter rant and probably not in his most coherent or rational state to give valid criticism.

    They're having lots and lots of cheeseburgers and french fries. If we let them continue at it, they'd kill off the entire population of people except those that are naturally immune to fast food. Unless they get triple bypass surgery, which allows them to continue on business as usual, ignoring reality.

    Are you a robot? Or just a CEO? "Won't someone please think of the children?" is silly when you don't want your kid to see a boob or hear the word 'Fuck' but watching him/her die innocently is a completely different can of worms.

    considering that the PP (currency of EQ) is literally worth more than the "real" currencies of some countries when the PP is sold on E-bay or whatever i would have to say it sure does.

    Talk about globalization! What would the American (or local) government think of people in 3rd world countries acquiring internet access and "working" earning items in Everquest and selling them online for valuable American dollars? Suddenly working for pennies in a Nike factory isn't such an appealing option. A theoretically fascinating method for getting "aid" into the hands of the people and not corrupt politicians.

    Blower is a old newspaper term describing a person who takes news reports over the phone and types them up.

    I think I now know why she never took the VSR route. She didn't want to draw attention to it's existence to her employers because it makes her job redundant!

    Hah! You thought those were bad?! Back when I was getting students on the campus networ (between '97-'99) the worst proprietary brand you could come across was BY FAR those damn Packard Bells. I still have nightmares about the wacky shit they would try to do when they would boot with new hardware in them. The day we found out about them going out of business, everyone at ResNet breathed a sigh of release.
